Day 2 of the WFD75 Anniversary Conference in Rome 🇮🇹

Today, we looked towards the future of deaf communities — from multilingual education and early access to sign languages, to deaf leadership and the next generation.

We also explored Artificial Intelligence, its opportunities and challenges, and why innovation must be developed with deaf people, not just for deaf people.

The day closed with Dr Joseph J. Murray’s vision: “The WFD at 100.”

Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights

This week, we celebrate deaf people, national sign languages, deaf culture, identity and diversity around the world.

As we mark 20 years of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and 75 years of the World Federation of the Deaf, we reaffirm a fundamental principle:

Sign language rights are human rights.

Throughout the week, we will highlight the right to national sign languages, quality multilingual and inclusive education, accessibility, meaningful participation, deaf culture and the full implementation of human rights for all deaf people.

Since its establishment in Austria in 1995, the WFD Youth Section has empowered thousands of young deaf people around the world through leadership development, international advocacy and youth programmes.

WFDYS gathers young deaf people through its Children’s Camps, Junior Camps and Youth Camps. 🤝✨

🇨🇴 Colombia Earthquake

Following the devastating earthquake in Colombia, the WFD is working with our Ordinary Member to support deaf people affected by the disaster.

Emergency information, evacuation instructions, healthcare, shelter and humanitarian assistance must be accessible in national sign languages.

No deaf person should be left behind. Sign languages save lives.

In 1984, WFD established its first Regional Secretariat, serving Asia and the Pacific.
Today, WFD works through 8 Regional Secretariats and 1 Regional Co-operating Member, strengthening regional collaboration, leadership and advocacy across every continent.
