In Beni Suef, the school day now starts with something fresh. 🥐

Every morning, freshly baked meals accompanied by fruit and vegetables reach 2,700 students across 45 schools through WFP’s newly introduced Central Kitchen model.

Behind every meal is a kitchen powered largely by women from the local community, many of them mothers of the students themselves, using locally sourced ingredients and services that help strengthen community livelihoods.

This model supports children’s nutrition, concentration, and ability to learn, while creating economic opportunities for local families and businesses. Combined with recyclable packaging and awareness sessions on healthy nutrition and recycling, it also supports the Government of Egypt’s vision for providing fresh and nutritious school meals to students.

By connecting local producers, women’s employment, and nutritious meals, the Central Kitchen model demonstrates how school feeding can nourish students while supporting broader community development. 🌱

What if a school meal could strengthen an entire community? 🌱💙

In Beni Suef, WFP’s new Central Kitchen model is doing just that.

Every school day, 2,700 students across 45 community schools receive fresh meals, including freshly baked pastries, fruit, and vegetables. Prepared by women from the community, many of them mothers of the students themselves, these meals help ensure children have the nutrition they need to learn, grow, and thrive.

By linking school feeding with local sourcing and women’s economic empowerment, the initiative supports livelihoods, strengthens local food systems, and contributes to more food-secure communities.

Because when we invest in children’s nutrition, we invest in stronger futures for everyone.

From a small loan to a thriving business. 🍞

When Olfat received skills training and a microloan through WFP-supported activities, she invested in something she knew best: baking bread.

Today, her home-based bakery is helping her earn an income, support her family, and build a more secure future, one loaf at a time.

Olfat's story is not unique. In fact, 99% of women who received loans used them to start or expand a business, and 92% of those businesses remain operational a year later.

Because when women are given the tools, skills, and opportunities to succeed, entire families and communities benefit.

The story continues, taking us beyond our everyday tables and into the homes and lives of the people behind this cause.

In Part 2 of our mini-film, we meet some of the people WFP supports and get a glimpse into their homes and daily lives, bringing us closer to the people at the heart of this story.

Bread is more than a staple. It is a lifeline that connects farmers, bakers, families, and communities, and lies at the heart of food security. In collaboration with Tayrah and Flavors Republic, we explore the journey of bread from harvest to table, shedding light on the people and systems that make this daily essential possible.

As the world’s largest humanitarian organization advocating for food security, WFP works alongside the Government of Egypt and partners across the food system to strengthen food security, support livelihoods, and ensure vulnerable communities have access to nutritious food.
Watch our first reel and follow the story of bread beyond the loaf.

Stay tuned for Reel 2, where we continue uncovering the journey that brings bread to our tables every day. ✨

A story about عيش, its place in our everyday lives, and the importance of making every loaf count.

Part 1 of our mini-film, in collaboration with @wfp_egypt and directed by @hayawkhairat , takes a closer look at something so familiar to us all, reminding us that there’s more to عيش than what’s on our table. by @wfp_egypt

Some evenings bring people together for a reason.

The third edition of Eish, by WFP and Zest, gathered guests from film, culture and beyond around food security during El Gouna Film Festival.

Can film change the way we think about food security?

Over three editions, the Eish Short Film Competition has brought together talented filmmakers from across the region to tell powerful stories about food security, resilience, and the challenges facing our world today. In partnership with El Gouna Film Festival, Zest, and El Gouna we've seen creativity turn awareness into meaningful conversation.

Film has a unique ability to connect us, shift perspectives, and inspire change. And every year, Eish continues to prove just how powerful that can be.

At the Eish Short Film Competition event at the El Gouna Film Festival, we met Ms. Rawad Halabi, Country Director of the World Food Programme in Egypt, and Mr. Raafat Nassar, Chairman of Iram Jewelry, who discussed their collaboration with Injy Kiwan to raise awareness about food security.

The collaboration features a specially created necklace produced by Iram Jewellery, and designed by Karim Mekhtigian, with the proceeds going to the World Food Programme to support its work addressing food insecurity.

Building on the WFP’s ongoing Eish initiative, the partnership highlights how creativity and design can bring attention to pressing humanitarian issues and inspire meaningful change.

“In Arabic, we have one word for bread and for life: eish.” 🌾

The third edition of Eish, by WFP and Zest at El Gouna Film Festival, brought together voices from film, culture and the humanitarian world around one question: how do we take care of each other?

Among them, Enjy Kiwan, who wore a necklace on the opening red carpet for food security with WFP in Egypt. by @wfp_egypt

A necklace with a purpose. ✨🌾

At #ElGounaFilmFestival, creativity meets impact through a unique collaboration between IRAM, @karimmekhtigian and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Egypt, together with @enjykiwan

Inspired by @wfp_egypt emblem and wheat as a symbol of food security, this one-of-a-kind piece worn by Kiwan on the red carpet, brought together art, design and a meaningful cause.

Following the festival, the piece will be auctioned, with proceeds supporting WFP’s food security programmes in Egypt.

Because jewellery can be more than a statement. It can stand for something bigger. 🤍
