A great night of creative connections at The Coalpit!

DFP and UNCSA Film Composition students recently came together to talk film, music, and possibilities for future collaborations.

Several DFP films have been scored by UNCSA students, and we’re excited to continue that tradition.

Here’s to more great stories and scores coming together! 🎥 🎶

Another amazing Out at the Movies Preview Night!

DFP students and faculty joined a crowd of OATM festival fans, filmmakers, and film participants to kick off the 13th Annual Out at the Movies International Film Festival!

The four featured shorts—IN KIND, WE ARE NOT UNICORNS, AMISH COUNTRY QUEER, and OUR SPACE, an original Queer History Project created in collaboration with DFP students—offered thought-provoking and engaging explorations of the importance of queer spaces in the past, present and future.

Big thanks to OATM Director of Operations and Marketing, Max Cullen for hosting a Q&A that expanded the conversation around community and creating space with the filmmakers, film participants, and DFP Out at the Movies intern Talia Kimelman.

We’re proud to continue our partnership with OATM and grateful to Wake the Arts for its sponsorship of Preview Night.

It was a full room at Full Bloom’s documentary shorts screenings!

A great crowd came out for a screening featuring two DFP films: AN ETERNAL SOUND, directed by Ryan Broussard & Andrew Meriwether, and ONE DAY, TWO WORLDS, directed by Pun Pun Pattrakulchai.

The screening was followed by an engaging Q&A featuring the filmmakers—and a bonus guest, AN ETERNAL SOUND film participant Tom Lewtak.

An awards ceremony on Saturday evening wrapped up a weekend of films and festivities, and we’re delighted to share that AN ETERNAL SOUND earned the Student Award!

Congratulations to Andrew and Ryan! 👏

Thanks to everyone at the Full Bloom Film Festival for hosting such a great festival and for your support of student filmmakers. We particularly enjoyed connecting with DFP alum and Festival Committee member Ed Foster!

🎬 We’re excited to share that the upcoming Full Bloom Film Festival in Statesville features two DFP films in its Short Films category!

🎥 AN ETERNAL SOUND
Directors: Ryan Broussard, Andrew Meriwether

In the heart of rural North Carolina, Tom Lewtak pursues perfection in one of the oldest and most complex living crafts: Pipe organ building. This meditative journey follows Tom in his creation of a new organ, exploring the transcendent resonance of an eternal sound.

🎥 ONE DAY, TWO WORLDS
Director: Pun Pun Pattrakulchai

Bob works as a senior mechanic at a Winston-Salem bike shop, where his meticulous attention to detail keeps the town cyclists rolling. At home, his real passion emerges: a 6,000-car slot car collection he repairs, races, and modifies. Growing up in a small town without a bike shop, Bob learned early that if something was broken, you fixed it yourself. “One Day, Two Worlds” vividly paints Bob's philosophy through his tinkering. Revealing that it's not about the money or winning, it's about the joy of craft and keeping people interested whether on two wheels or four tiny ones.

Be sure to add this screening to your calendar!

🎟️ No tickets needed!

The International Black Theatre Festival returns to Winston-Salem, NC, July 27–August 1, bringing six days of world-class theatre, film, poetry, workshops, and cultural celebration.

📽️ The IBTF Film Festival showcases award-winning documentaries and independent narrative films celebrating Black stories, artists, and culture.

We're especially excited the festival's film lineup features WE ARE, BECAUSE WE WERE, directed by Documentary Film Program alum Rodney Wilds (MFA '23).

Presented in partnership with the RiverRun International Film Festival, this powerful 39-minute documentary follows the Winston-Salem African American Archive as it preserves nearly two centuries of Black history while reconnecting the community with stories that were forgotten—and others that had never been told.

Don't miss a festival highlight—the world premiere of HOLY GROUND: THE LEGACY OF THE NATIONAL BLACK THEATRE FESTIVAL, directed by Jackie Alexander and Ka'ramuu Kush.

The documentary celebrates the enduring legacy of the National Black Theatre Festival, its founder Larry Leon Hamlin ("Mr. Marvtastic"), and Executive Producer Emeritus Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin.

🎬 Films will screen daily July 28–August 1 at venues throughout Winston-Salem, with many presented multiple times during the festival—giving audiences several opportunities to experience an outstanding lineup.
