💜 Well, hello there! Let’s get acquainted… 📚

I thought it was about time I introduced myself properly, rather than just popping up to tell you about another book that’s ruined my sleep, reduced me to tears, or made me check that all my doors are locked 😂

I’m Deb, the reader behind What Deb Read Next. I’m a Northern lass who runs on strong tea, reads far too many thrillers, and has a soft spot for historical fiction. Give me a twist I didn’t see coming or a book that leaves me emotionally broken, and I’m a happy woman!

This little corner of Instagram is where I share my latest reads, the occasional bookish ramble and, of course, the book reviews no one asked for💜

Some random facts about me…

📚 One of my favourite books growing up was The Witches by Roald Dahl, along with Point Horror books. Says it all, really! 😂

💜 I’m winging it at life. I haven’t got a clue what I’m doing, and I reckon anyone who understands pensions is definitely more of an adult than I am.

🎢 I love roller coasters, and one of my favourite holidays is Orlando. However, now I’m getting older, I can’t do anything that spins! The VelociCoaster…..Bring it on. The Mad Hatter’s teacups? Absolutely not 😂

👚 I will ALWAYS check old wardrobes in properties, just in case I finally find Narnia🦁

🍸 I will take a bottle of blue WKD over a posh, expensive wine any day. Yes, I’m still living like it’s the 90s!

💃 When I’m not reading or drinking a brew, and I get a rare night out, I’ll be the one whose knees are also still living in the 90s and who stays on that dance floor until they chuck me out! 😂

📚 Now it’s your turn! Tell me one thing about yourself that I wouldn’t know from your book reviews. I’m looking forward to getting to know you all a little better. 💜

🎬📚 MY BOOKSTA HORROR MOVIE 💀

Forget ghosts, creepy dolls and things that go bump in the night… THIS is the stuff of nightmares! 😂

📖 Cracked book spines
😱 Folding the corners
💀 Putting a book face down
😭 A bent corner on a brand-new book when it arrives

Some things are just unforgivable. 😂📚

And don’t even get me started on someone borrowing a book and returning it looking like it’s been through a zombie apocalypse! 💀
Happened to me with a copy of mine of The Nighingale once 😱😱

Do we have any in common?? What’s YOUR biggest Booksta horror movie?? 🍿

📚 Book Review 📚 (ad|pr)

The Deadly Inheritance of Everest MacDonald ~ A.J. West

This is my first book by A.J. West, despite having a few of his books already hanging out on my bookshelf! 😂

I really enjoyed meeting Everest and absolutely adored her as a character. She left me with SO many little questions and I was constantly wanting to know more about her.

I loved that the story is inspired by a true crime case, and now I’ve finished the book, I’m definitely going down a rabbit hole to find out more about the real-life murder! 👀

There are quite a few characters to get your head around, and it did take me a little while to keep track of everyone, but I eventually got there!

I also really enjoyed the sprinkling of the supernatural throughout the story, particularly how it was woven into the theatre setting. There was something about the whole thing that gave me a real old-school mystery-solving feel ~ piecing together the clues and trying to work out exactly what was going on.

Overall, I really enjoyed piecing the puzzle together alongside Everest, and now I think it’s time I went back to my bookshelves and finally picked up those other A.J. West books! 📚

Thank you to @ajwestauthor and @instabooktours for having me on the Readalong 🫶🏻

Have you read any books by A.J. West before? 👇 by @what_deb_read_next

Starting my new book this evening and I’m so excited to be back on another book tour with @ace.book.tours 🎉📚

I was very kindly gifted I Think We Should Kill Other People by the gorgeous @beccasbookhabit 💜 and I can’t wait to dive in!

Here’s the blurb… 👀

Hazel and Marc were paired together on revolutionary new reality TV show Love Synced, in which AI matches hopeful lovers based on its perceptive algorithms.

But when it came time to say I Do on camera, Hazel couldn’t go through with it, leaving her perfect match at the altar, his family furious and the whole TV production in jeopardy.

Now all she wants to do is fly home. Instead, she’s trapped in an isolated airport that’s been ground to a halt by a snow storm... with her ex and his obnoxiously rich family. But when they start turning up dead, a jilted lover is the least of Hazel’s worries - there’s a serial killer to catch first.

The AI algorithm failed to find Hazel her soulmate... But could it help find the murderer instead?

This sounds like it’s going to be right up my street! 🔪💜

Have you read this one yet? Or is it on your TBR?

📚 Book Review 📚

The Burial Club ~ Claire Bamford

I can safely say Claire Bamford is becoming an autobuy author for me! After reading The Messenger, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her next book, The Burial Club.

This is historical fiction with a mystery at its heart, and what a beautifully written story it is. The first chapter completely broke my heart ~ it took every ounce of my being not to bawl my eyes out while sitting in public!

The characters are vivid and memorable, and I instantly warmed to Marianne as our lead. I particularly loved the hint of the supernatural through Marianne’s visions. It fitted so beautifully with the story without ever becoming too far-fetched.

I was completely swept away to another era and thoroughly enjoyed being taken on this mystery tour, trying to piece together the mysteries and misfortunes surrounding The Burial Club.

Claire is fantastic at creating characters you genuinely come to care about, and I loved the relationships and dynamics between them. Marianne’s strong bonds with her family and friends really add another layer of strength and heart to the narrative.

✨ Absolutely recommend this one! ✨

And if you haven’t read The Messenger yet, I strongly recommend adding that to your TBR while you’re at it! 📚

Are you a fan of a little supernatural element in your mystery reads, or do you prefer your mysteries firmly rooted in reality? 👀📚

A big thank you to @novel.tours and @clairebamfordwrites for having me on the tour 💕💕

📚September Wrap Up📚

Does anyone else feel like they’ve blinked and September has just disappeared?! 😳📚

This month has been chaotic to say the least, but there’s been plenty to be happy about too! 🫶🏻

I’ve read some AMAZING books, with standouts being Better Off Dead by Sean Watkin and Where the Bruised Pieces Go by Jane Fawley

Saving Noah has genuinely got under my skin and I’m STILL thinking about it! 😬

Not Quite Dead Yet totally surprised me (I was NOT expecting to need tissues 😭), while Killer Twist had me smiling with its cheeky homage to the book world. 🫶🏻📚

I also had great fun returning to Lisa Gardner’s books… although I’m still a little creeped out about Dog! 👀😂

And finally, not forgetting some fabulous historical mysteries. I’ve got reviews coming very soon for The Burial Club and The Deadly Inheritance of Everest MacDonald, so keep your eyes peeled! 👀📖

September, you’ve been a busy one… but what a month of reading! ❤️

What was your standout read of September? 👇🏻

The buddy read is ready to go and everyone is excited to read the next instalment of the Sheridan Holler series!!! I’m about to settle down with my brew and biscuits….let’s Count the Dead ☠️

Blurb: When homeless man Bobby Stover insists his friend’s suicide was really murder, DI Sheridan Holler is sceptical―until she uncovers a series of deaths, all of them in Liverpool, all ruled as suicides, that suddenly look like anything but. The killings span years, each one chillingly staged, the truth buried beneath an illusion of despair. This murderer is following a mysterious pattern―and there seems to be no end in sight.

Sheridan and her team find themselves in a race to crack the killer’s code, but when a crucial piece of the puzzle falls into place, they realise the next five victims have already been marked.

They don’t know who. They don’t know where. But they know it won’t stop here. Can they get one step ahead of a calculating killer?
