On our last trip to Japan a year ago I became particularly enamoured with all the tiny bars and cafes in the alpine towns we visited, staffed by seemingly just one person who did it all - hosting, mixing drinks, cooking, bussing - often from behind a cramped but beautifully organised back bar space. It seeped into my consciousness so much I had an actual dream about opening my own one, and got inspired to draw these sketches of these multi-tasking folk at work in their gorgeous spaces.

We’re heading back to Japan in less than a month - Kyushu and Okinawa tips welcome! by @whatkatiedoes

New pots are live on my shop now! As ever, my making was deeply inspired by nature, textiles and ancient history. I’m an autumn truther (hate it) but seeing these earthy, tactile objects glinting in the sun certainly make it all the more bearable. I hope you find something you love 🤎 by @whatkatiedoes

As a person who loves working with both textiles and clay, I see a lot of parallels between the two… for example in making these ikat-inspired mugs I paint on a wax resist to define the design, which is also used in traditional printing and dyeing of patterned textiles. I love that the glaze melts and melds together to make an organic check, almost like how warp and weft threads combine to create new colours and patterns where they intersect. These one-off mugs will all be available in my next shop update at the end of this week ✨ by @whatkatiedoes
