Universal is suing DistroKid — but the real story is bigger than copyright infringement.

The question is: how much responsibility does a platform have when it knows infringing activity keeps happening through its system?

Think about it like a parking lot.

If somebody gets robbed once, the business didn’t commit the robbery.

But if it keeps happening, people eventually start asking:

Where are the lights?
Where are the cameras?
Where’s security?

That’s essentially the argument here — except the property being protected is intellectual property.

Universal is challenging whether DistroKid can simply say, “We didn’t upload it. Our users did,” when allegedly infringing music keeps moving through its platform.

For independent artists, this could eventually affect how distributors verify ownership, clear uploads, and decide what gets through the gate.

Artists will let everyone know about the engineer who took a month getting them their files and overcharge them… but say nothing about the engineer who recorded their whole song for $75 and them sounding crisp… So, all of your followers know the guy who “screwed you” does engineering but none of them know they guy who got you right. 🤔 #music101 #gatekeeping #indieartists by @whatkelbysaid

Here’s the SCAM… Artists don’t know where they are on their journey… Artists who e built no equity in the scene with other artists, promoters, etc… think they shouldn’t have to pay to perform. Artists who have done those things and earned the respect from their peers get to perform on many shows for free but because they have not cultivated and audience outside of the independent scene fail to get to the point where they can command payment. They often equate how long they’ve been doing something with doing it the right way. A promoter who loves your song can throw you on as an opening act for the live… but he’s not likely to pay you $1,000 to take up time on an event that he’s already $20K into. by @whatkelbysaid

Asked if I was taking a picture with Bank or Black so I knew whether to smile in the photo.. 😂 I ended up flicking it up with Rashad… A lot of good info was given at last night’s event but one of the loudest statements made in the room was this man’s energy with everything going on. He came in showed genuine love and continued to sew seed into his community. Thoughts and prayers go out to @bigbankATL and the whole #DTE.
