Through its distinctive cultural setting, Akka brings forward themes of feminine power, matriarchy, womanhood and the importance of respecting and celebrating women beyond traditional gender roles. One of the most beautifully written moments in Meethe Mein Kya Hai is when Meera opens up to Jai about her feelings. What makes this scene truly special is how brilliantly writer-director Radhika Bansal shows that feelings, even when innocent or unexpected, deserve to be heard rather than mocked or dismissed. Jai doesn't make Meera feel guilty, embarrassed or uncomfortable for expressing herself. Instead, he handles the conversation with warmth, humour and emotional maturity while maintaining healthy boundaries. It's a small but powerful reminder that we can disagree with someone's feelings without making them regret being honest about them. Meethe Mein Kya Hai is a heartwarming family entertainer featuring Ritwik Bhowmik, Rohini Hattangadi, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Shivika Rishi, Gaurav K. Sharma, Tarana Raja, Abhay Kaul, Kanikka Kapur and Vikram Bakshi in a lovely ensemble. Written and directed by Radhika Bansal, with Amit Trivedi's music, Piyush Puty's cinematography and Neha Mehra's editing, the film beautifully captures the chaos, humour and emotional warmth of family relationships. Its lovable characters, hilarious conversations and wholesome moments make it a feel-good watch that leaves you smiling and appreciating the little things that make relationships special. Eetha (2026) promises to be a powerful musical biographical drama, with Shraddha Kapoor stepping into the world of Maharashtra’s legendary Tamasha and Lavani traditions. Inspired by the life of celebrated folk performer Vithabai Narayangaonkar, the film explores a woman’s extraordinary journey through ambition, love, betrayal, struggles and resilience. It showcases how an artist rises against social conventions and challenges the limitations placed on her to create her own identity. With its vibrant portrayal of Marathi folk culture, Lavani performances and an emotionally driven story, Eetha brings an inspiring chapter of India's artistic heritage to the big screen. Shraddha Kapoor looks particularly exciting in this completely different avatar, portraying a fearless woman whose passion for her art becomes her strength. Randeep Hooda, Nana Patekar, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Siddharth Jadhav and the supporting cast further add to the film's appeal. Directed by Laxman Utekar and backed by Maddock Films and Kathputli Creations, the film also brings together the musical brilliance of Ajay–Atul. From its grand Lavani sequences to its powerful storytelling, Eetha looks like a celebration of art, culture and a woman's determination to leave behind a lasting legacy. The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on 4 December 2026. by @whatmakesacinema
Baththa (2026) delivers a beautiful story about family, love and the unexpected ways people change. Vijay Sethupathi shines as Baththa, bringing humour, vulnerability and emotional depth to his character. The most wholesome moment comes in the ending, when he sings for his daughter despite knowing he cannot sing well. On the day his little girl steps into womanhood, he simply wants to sing her a lullaby, expressing a father’s unconditional love through the most imperfect yet heartfelt song. It is a beautifully written scene that reminds us how the smallest gestures can carry the deepest emotions. Director and writer Balaji Tharaneetharan deserves appreciation for creating a story that balances humour with a meaningful message about kindness, family and personal transformation. Vijay Sethupathi’s natural performance and the little girl’s innocence make their bond feel genuine and touching. Sai Abhyankkar’s music further enhances the film’s emotional moments, while the supporting cast and technical crew contribute to its warmth. Baththa is a reminder that beneath every tough exterior can be a loving heart, and sometimes, a father singing off-key for his daughter can become the most memorable moment of all. by @whatmakesacinema
Gondhal (2025), the Marathi folk thriller directed by Santosh Davakhar, has achieved a major milestone by becoming India's official entry for the 99th Academy Awards (Oscars 2027) in the Best International Feature Film category. Selected by the Film Federation of India from 33 films, it has brought international recognition to Marathi cinema. The film also earned the Silver Peacock for Best Director at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), along with several other prestigious accolades. Its journey from Indian regional cinema to representing the country on the global stage makes this a proud moment for Marathi filmmaking and audiences. Starring Kishor Kadam, Ishita Deshmukh, Yogesh Sohoni, Nishad Bhoir and Anuj Prabhu, Gondhal features music by legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja, cinematography by Amalendu Chaudhary and editing by Ashish Mhatre. Set against the fascinating backdrop of Maharashtra's traditional Gondhal folk ritual, this psychological thriller explores forbidden love, obsession, betrayal, faith and the struggle for freedom through Suman's story. Its distinctive Maharashtrian cultural elements, haunting musical atmosphere and suspenseful storytelling give the film a unique cinematic identity. With its pan-India theatrical release on 13 November 2026, audiences now have an opportunity to experience India's official Oscar entry and celebrate the growing global recognition of Marathi cinema on the big screen. by @whatmakesacinema
Kaakan (2015) is a heartbreaking Marathi romantic drama that explores unfinished love, sacrifice and the pain of a lifetime spent longing for someone. The story of Kisu and Sudha beautifully portrays how social differences and circumstances can separate two people despite their deep love. Jitendra Joshi delivers a deeply emotional performance as Kisu, capturing his innocence, loneliness and unwavering devotion, while Urmila Kanitkar Kothare brings grace and vulnerability to Sudha. Ashutosh Gaikwad as Gopi and the supporting cast further enrich this touching story, making its emotional journey feel genuine and unforgettable. Writer and director Kranti Redkar, along with writer Omkar Mangesh Datt, deserves appreciation for crafting such a powerful Marathi love story. Ajay Singha’s soulful music and Bithin Das’s cinematography beautifully enhance the film’s nostalgic atmosphere. However, the climax is what truly breaks your heart, when Kisu finally reunites with Sudha, gives her the bangle he had kept for her, and takes his last breath in her arms. Jitendra Joshi’s performance in this final scene is unforgettable, conveying years of longing and a lifetime of unspoken emotions. Kaakan is more than a romantic film; it is a deeply moving story of love that survives time but cannot escape its tragic destiny. by @whatmakesacinema
Baththa (2026) delivers a powerful social message through its climax, where little Sabri reveals why he refused to help Baththa escape. Although he was initially ready to open the door, Baththa’s threats against him and his family filled him with fear. This scene highlights how the intimidating image we create through our behaviour can become the very reason people hesitate to help us in difficult times. Fear may force people to obey us, but it cannot earn their trust or compassion. Sai Prithviraj delivers a remarkable performance as Sabri, portraying a child’s innocence, vulnerability and fear with impressive naturalness, while Vijay Sethupathi brings emotional depth to Baththa’s character. Writer and director Balaji Tharaneetharan deserves appreciation for delivering such a meaningful message through powerful storytelling. Sai Prithviraj’s performance stands out as one of the film’s memorable highlights, while Vijay Sethupathi’s acting makes the confrontation even more impactful. Sai Abhyankkar’s music, Selvakumar S. K.’s cinematography and R. Kalaivanan’s editing further enhance the cinematic experience. Through this emotional climax, Baththa explores fear, trust, human behaviour and the consequences of our actions. It reminds us that how we treat others in our strongest moments can determine whether they stand beside us when we are at our weakest. by @whatmakesacinema
Kaun? (1999) is one of the most unsettling psychological thrillers in Hindi cinema, directed by Ram Gopal Varma and written by Anurag Kashyap. Starring Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee and Sushant Singh, the film turns an ordinary night inside a house into a terrifying game of suspicion, fear and psychological manipulation. With a serial killer on the loose and a mysterious stranger knocking at the door, every conversation feels disturbing and every character seems capable of hiding something sinister. The film's minimal setting, eerie atmosphere, unpredictable twists and brilliant use of silence make it a masterclass in suspense without relying on conventional horror elements. But the moment that truly stays with you is Urmila Matondkar's creepy smile in the ending. After spending the entire film surrounded by uncertainty, that final expression changes the way you look at everything that came before it. Her unsettling screen presence and remarkable performance make the climax even more disturbing, leaving audiences questioning what they have just witnessed. Imagine watching Kaun? in theatres back in 1999 and walking out with that smile permanently etched into your memory. Even today, the film stands out as a cult psychological thriller that proves a single expression, when delivered at the right moment, can be more frightening than an entire horror movie. by @whatmakesacinema
