#DambaFestival Traditional Mamprusi dancing can look chaotic and disorderly to the outsider but there is an ancient methodology and structure to the performance.
1) First, when the drummers call out a dancer he usually acts disinterested and may even pretend to ignore them. This gives the praise singer a chance to start praising him as they drum. He finally concedes, rises and heads over to the chief in charge of the festival - in this case the Chief of Damba (Damma Naa).
2) Damma Naa then gives him a leather-handled horse tail - thus officially handing the dance over to him. (see the horsetail in Photo#2)
3) Before heading out to dance, the dancer will shuffle over to each of the more prominent chiefs, bowing and accepting their money.
4) Then he heads out to dance... but this is just the warm-up. It's a slower rhythm and as he dances, the other chiefs, his family, his friends and supporters come up and throw money at him. (see photo #3). For good dancers or prominent figures, a huge crowd of people can mob him with cash. The drummers will draw this first portion of the dance out because they get to keep all the money lavished upon the dancer.
5) Finally, they move to the 2nd half of the dance. The rhythm increases to a fever pitch and the dancer can now show off his best moves. It involves impressive footwork that follows the beat and is punctuated with twirls (this makes his smocks fly up - see Photo#4). Often the dance ends with the dancer spinning for an extended period of time... the trick is to go as long as he can without getting dizzy and falling over. #DambaFestival in Nalerigu, Ghana relies on a slew of musicians to make it happen. There is a fascinating co-dependent relationship between the chiefs and the drummers, fiddlers, & praise singers. The musicians need the income of the chiefs while the chiefs need the musicians to help them show off in public.

#UNICON22 Expert Male X-Style Finals
“You got two minutes to show us your greatest moves on a unicycle. Go!”

Trey borrowed a move from @jacksebben_unicyclist and used a sharpie to write out his tricks on his forearm (2min is a long time to remember everything!). A lot of folks saw him checking his arm (see pic #2) and thought he was injured. A bunch of other riders saw the genius of it and soon followed suit! 😂 taken in Steyr, Austria by @whaun

#UNICON22's last event was the Street Unicycling finals. @jelle_dillen certainly made it a memorable one by pulling off this jump as one of his final tricks.

#UNICON22 I'm finishing up going through my Flatland Finals photos from last week and came across this gem. @humiyasaa had just landed a uniwhip and Trey and @shuhei_11i42 rushed him, overwhelmed with joy!
