quite possibly the apex predator of the insect world 🌎
equipped with razor blades that act like shears, capable of tearing through hard exoskeletons and with extraordinary precision, they eat their prey while it’s still alive 🫪

the two larger compound eyes of a dragonfly are composed of 30,000 different lenses! with three smaller eyes as well, they have nearly a full 360 degree field of vision. zoom in to see every detail!

Trying out my new lens was fun, and also a bit of a learning curve. These are some of the first shots i’ve ever taken on the notorious Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM and many more to come!

A turkey vulture circling overhead on a warm Saturday afternoon. On the ground, all you can really do is hope it flies towards you, with this tree nearby I thought it added some nice natural framing with added depth.

The American Alligator! I have so much respect for these animals and actually have one tattooed on myself. This shot adds just a slice of their ominous appearance, lurking in the shallows of a Texas swamp. taken in Brazos Bend State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife by @wheeler.prod

Platycryptus undatus: the tan or “familiar jumping spider” is probably one of the largest jumping spiders i’ve shot so far. A very curious and cute creature I found during a hike in the Brazos Bend State Park.

if you see this, DON’T TOUCH IT! this is a southern flannel moth in its larval stage. also known as an asp, tree asp or woolly slug. it known to be one of the most venomous caterpillars in the US, hidden underneath all that fluff are sharp spines that cause itching, rashes and swelling. please admire from a distance.

I’m beginning to believe the blue dashers in my area are gossiping with each other talking about this one singular man taking pictures of them.

I really like how this flower added a textured background and sort of puts you in the spiders perspective of its everyday life. It’s the perfect trap that offers little cover with an appetizing treat for other prey. Just imagine you’re a little old fly looking for a sweet treat, surrounded by curtain walls of red, and lurking behind the curvature is your fate…

Honestly I didn’t even know these spiders #spinybackedorbweaver lived around my area. Totally one of the coolest looking arachnids. It was quite challenging getting close enough with the wind, I didn’t want her web to get caught on my gear. They can make some very impressive webs as well. For such a small spider that is, reaching multiple feet from one bush or tree to another.
