Building design, focusing on sustainable, beautiful homes.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I haven’t posted in a while; my own extension is in the build phase – the part less-photographed because it’s dusty, slow, a little chaotic... And not Insta-perfect as Rafe and I are heavily involved – for better or worse – in the build side of things.

Speaking of Insta-worthy, I recently saw a feature on the most breathtaking architectural home – a true showcase. But what struck me besides the beauty, was how many consultants were involved – there was a design firm that selected the furniture! (It was beautiful furniture…)

It got me thinking, has celebrating a home you’ve actually contributed to gone out of vogue? Was it ever fashionable? I‘m relatively new to the industry, so maybe it’s always been like this. But I can’t help noticing how much more celebrated curation is over contribution. Though urgh… that house was bloody gorgeous. But perhaps unobtainable to everyone bar the mega-minted.

And when we measure ourselves against magazine spreads and social media perfection, it’s easy to feel like we’re falling short. But maybe 85%-great-done-yourself is as worthy of celebration as insta-worthy-but-outsourced-to-the-hilt? Maybe more so?

So, here’s to the messy middle. The quiet moments. The small milestones. The slow-motion thrill of piecing something together – knowing the final finish isn’t magic – it’s sweat, dust, determination and, not gonna lie, a few arguments.

At the risk of being mega-cheese, let’s be proud of what we create.
Even if it’s not magazine-perfect, it’s yours, it’s real, and it's worth sharing.

Drop in opportunity for a volunteer who is willing to learn, this is in Melbourne this week. It will be hand casting an extension. (I won't be at the job, I'm just putting the feelers out for a lovely owner builder couple who need a hand)

Paid work in Bemboka on the south coast. This is a Cast&Block job for a high end project. You'd need to be skilled, have a car or transport and are a hard worker. You'd be working alongside me. I'm happy to share everything I know about Hempcrete during the build. We start around the 3rd of Feb and will go for around two weeks. by @wheelhousebuildingdesign

Progress is slow at old South Street, but there are small milestones and many joys as we build our own hemp house. Here are a few pics to show what we've been getting up to.

Big thanks to the wonderful and very talented volunteers who have come on site to help and upskill. Shout out to @shebangs.handy @rearchitecture.au Lara, Tom, Robin and @becxscar.

And also a big cheer to Will Brain from @hempcretevictoria for coming and helping us realise we know so little.

To see how we are going, head over to @rafebenli for regular little video snippets.

Our latest project is my own home!

Definitely one of the harder briefs; the client is demanding and eccentric, and the material is pioneering (we're using hemp + lime).

A lot of troubleshooting and freestyling, but we have enthusiasm and a good team of people on our side.

Will be sure to post a few more updates as we go along.

All good things come to those who wait!

We finally got a photographer out to the house in Warragul. Thanks @laurenmurphyphotography for capturing the beauty of this mid-century masterpiece. And thanks again to @lindycorrie and John for hosting.

Here is a little sample platter of the snaps.

I think this is one of my favourite moments in the house. Formerly the formal lounge, we decided to convert this room into the main suite, allowing it to take advantage of the eastern light.

The informal dining area bridges the space between old and new.
Friggen love those paintings.

And then, there it was.

Last month, I went back to visit @lindycorrie and John at their gorgeous residence in Warragul. So many moments of beauty, and their personal aesthetic lovingly displayed in their new kitchen, lounge and bedroom.
Oh, and then there's the pool.
