Nesting in the studio with some reed structures preparing to usher in their final form with mulberry paper. The softened light is exactly what I need in this space, so many versions of these wobbling shapes are in the works. Since this space is called the lamp room, I’m hoping to populate much of the ceiling with undulating light filled surfaces, amidst other finds and gifts I’ve received along the way.

Can’t you unname the practices of the social world so that it looks like nature already? , 2026

This work is based on a petulant revision of a Kathleen Stewart quote:

“Nostalgia rises to importance as a cultural practice as culture becomes more and more diffuse, more and more a ‘structure of feelings,’ as culture takes on the power of ‘distance’ that comes of displacing speakers—the power to flatten distinctions, to blur genres, to unname the practices of the social world so that they look like nature.”

I’ve seen a lot of moss-related crafting and design this year. Moss walls, moss clothing, moss bags. And now I have a thought and unfortunately I am going to follow it all the way into the swamp. It made me think about how the bagged moss industry feels a lot like animal poaching to me. And that bothers me. So allow me to get uncomfortably through this…

I’ve made performance work about animal poaching in the past, and this piece feels like an extension of that, but as a textile.

The moss I’ve seen in these walls is collected, traded, packaged in plastic, glued to things, and then sold with the reassurance that it is already dead, so you don’t have to worry about killing it. I find this strangely disturbing.

They are no doubt something to behold. But you know that math isn’t ethicsing

There’s a kind of nostalgia in the aesthetics of “nature” that makes the systems around it disappear. The taking becomes care. The acquisition becomes stewardship. The thing itself becomes proof that we are doing good.

And suddenly the moss doesn’t look like a traded material anymore.

It looks like nature.

I’m not sure I’m trying to make a moss wall. Maybe I am out of spite. And maybe, in doing so, I’m trying to justify my own use of upcycled materials. I dunno.

I made this piece with donated synthetic and natural yarns from unfinished projects of friends and acquaintances, and a bag of thrifted Spanish moss that looked like it had survived a basement since the 80s.

I think I’m trying to figure out why I keep seeing poachers when everyone else seems to be seeing nature.

Anyway, it’s being installed in a dispensary for a bit by @where_away_is

this thing has no title, 2026

double sided
wool yarns and packing plastics

A lot of play has happened this year. So I don’t see the pieces I’ve made this year as completed works as much as they are studies in attention.

This texture is definitely something that craves touch. It’s got a buoyant sort of icky sticky to it on one side and a corse froth on the other. Texture seems to be a primary fixation for me.

I really love working with plastics and wool. Lashing and bundling them together. So much of our textile waste is a sort of poly blend. So devising my own textiles in a less manufactured setting feels a bit slower and closer to my desires for material literacy. This is my own poly blend.

I bring these black and blue yarns back into a piece I made later in the year. This is just a first firing of ideas.

I like working with material remnants of tradeswork and construction. For obvious reasons if you know me. Combining the materials of the building trades with costuming I think is what this effort ends up leaning into. Lots of thoughts about work, spectacle, and worth. This little guy showed me a lot about where I want to go. by @where_away_is
