Kindergarten art activity that has so many other benefits: yes please!👏👏👏 It’s the perfect activity for the holidays to keep everyone happy & calm.

I’ve seen many people use stones, which I think in great for the 3-4 age group, but I wanted something that would be more fluid for my kindergarteners. These glass pebbles are just about PERFECT!! They work much more smoothly than stones and would be appropriate for older children learning cursive too.

For older children, I’d challenge them with fluency patterns to recreate using the glass pebble. Trust me, it’s harder than it looks!

I had so much fun creating my example, so it would be a good activity to chill with at any age. I have so many ideas to go with from here! What are your ideas to build on this??

You wanted the what-to-do list for 100 days of kindergarten: here it is✅⤵️

⭐️Take a photo of the class on the day.
⭐️It’s only one day so keep activities simple and easy to set up.
⭐️Keep important parts to your routine as part of your day as this can encourage feelings of safety.
⭐️Use materials that the class are familiar with and need no extra explanation.
⭐️Choose activities that require only brief/simple explanations
⭐️Include movement breaks and time for emotional regulation
⭐️Go through social stories prior, for students who are neurodivergent or have experienced trauma.
⭐️It doesn’t matter if you don’t end up having time for everything you’ve planned- slow and calm always win with little ones.
⭐️Remember it’s okay if not every child is happy about the day.
⭐️Enjoy your celebration without comparison to those online or even the classroom next door- your class only experiences your celebration💞
⭐️Include students in set up: this helps them to feel part of the celebration and can help them feel less anxious.
⭐️Take a moment to reflect and enjoy celebrating just how far your little ones have come!!

I hope setting up your classroom is straightforward💗💞 My classroom is first and foremost functional and comfortable for my little ones. The messy display next to my desk, with all the pictures children have given to me this year, is a must🥰🥹 And placement of water bottles, whiteboards and peaceful play trays, are very important, even if these aren’t pretty.

Co designing play sessions is something that is awesome! I start slowly, at first asking my little ones for feedback and what they like/don’t like (Term 1). By Term 2 they will approach me and remind me to get out some sticky notes to write down what they say, as they have watched me doo this for a term. By the end of first semester, we could have this session shown, completely planned from their ideas.

Some of the ideas they told me were: read and paint, read the room (but I had to hide the tear off strips which I did the morning following filming this), cut and paste reading, “a random game”😂, “the light table with lots of things so we can practise making new colours,” “the all the dots thing with a dice, but we can use any colour we like,” the dotters “with anything,” and “something where we can build things and talk about it and compare what we made.” There were more, but I told them I had no more space so we would do them next term. I still have the list🥰

And the best part, the effectiveness of the activities arranged for this session was incredible! They held ownership. It showed.

As we did our quick ‘play tour’ at the start, I casually mentioned the student suggestions that led to the activity. Everyone congratulated them!!! It was the sweetest thing and the confidence that was built in that small moment was awesome🥹🥰 Highly recommend doing this.

Anyway, I hope the ideas from my kindergarten students help you with your planning.

Because you shouldn’t have to plan the one-off special days all by yourself💗 This was last year. And I sourced resources online due to time pressure. This year I have made time these holidays to create something perfect for all of us, so we can have resources designed for Aussie classrooms (I’ve included US spelling/font too).

I now happily have a range of activities, beyond these shown, to choose from.

The series you have asked for (a lot) ✅🥰 The alphabet, exposure through play, a letter at a time. Basically this is what I did with Pre Kindergarten (year before school) as part of their program, with the main focus on developing fine motor skills, social skills, and other important life long skills they need before formal learning. I also included numeracy skills and units of inquiry (and many other areas) during play sessions. They learned about learning. Children who were interested and ready for reading, could move forward with this, without the pressure of expectation on everyone. Our explicit teaching and learning sessions focused on our inquiry units and phonological awareness mostly.

In kindergarten, the grade I’m teaching now, the approach to literacy is through play alongside much more explicit teaching. Teaching SATPIN first, blending to read, segmenting to write etc. I’m happy to answer questions in another post so add them to the comments.

Are you excited for this series?! It’s going to be a reel AND still pics series as so many people have asked for both. Part 1 reel, part 2 carousel, for each letter. I will add in alphabet order even though I don’t ever teach it this way. So, here is ‘A, Part 1.’ 😘

Parents who are busy with work & endless chores & life admin, may relate. It can be hard to think of, get organised for, and engage in, activities WITH your child/ren.

This is EASY!!!! Cookie cutters, permanent marker, and paint (or crayons and pencils). Yes, it’s simple. But that’s what makes it great. No big set up. Just grab and go. 20minutes all up.
