It’s no surprise that Barcelona is one of the mos visited cities in the world during the summer time. That being said, in my opinion a visit to the city is incomplete without exploring some of the surrounding areas. In the summer, Barcelona has some truly incredible experiences (like hiking the Camí de Ronda), coastal towns, and beaches. However, its close proximity to the mountains also provides a cooler escape for those that prefer the mountains over the beach. I hope you enjoy these recommendations and please let me know if there is any content you would like to see from me over the next few months 🥹

Why do these mistakes matter?

Barcelona is an incredible city that is justifiably popular. It has a unique character and vibe that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere, and for that reason it attracts a huge amount of tourists.

While this can be a bonus for the city’s economy, overtourism unfortunately brings problems for the city, which can impact residents and also the experience of tourists. Being aware of how to travel through the city mindfully, respectfully and sensibly can help you have a better experience and make your visit a positive for those who live in Barcelona!

SAVE this guide for visiting Montserrat 📍

HOW TO GET THERE:
🚗: Approx 1 hour from Barcelona, make sure to leave early because there is limited parking (7€ per day for car, 3,50 for motorcycle)
🚂 + 🚠: Take the FGC R5 train (Barcelona-Manresa) from Plaça Espanya to Aeri Montserrat station and then the Aeri cable car up (buy a combined ticket at Plaça Espanya for both).
🚂: Take the FGC R5 from Plaça Espanya to Monistrol de Montserrat station (buy a combined ticket).
🚂 + 🥾: Take the R5 to either station and then hike up following trail markers.
You can also purchase tickets that include access to the Sant Joan funicular (see the Billete Trans Montserrat).
🚌 : Take the bus from Sants Estació (Autocares Julia)

WHAT TO SEE/DO:
🌹 : Start at the Plaza Santa Maria (don’t miss the five arches viewpoint) and visit the monastery, basilica and museum.
☀️ : Go inside the basilica and if you want to see the Montserrat statue up close make sure to book online in advance on the Abadia Montserrat website.
🎵 : Watch the choir children sing (one of the oldest choirs in Europe). You also need to make a seperate reservation for this on the same website.
🕯 : Light a candle on the Camino de Ave Maria.
⛅️: Check out the Escalera de Entendimiento and go down the stairs to the right for one of the most beautiful views.
⛪️: Consider hiking in the area. I recommend the hike to Saint Michaels cross.
🚡: End the day going up the Funicular de Sant Joan for one of the most incredible views of the monastery or you can hike up to it.

📍 This is the beautiful postmodern building called La Muralla Roja in Calpe, Spain featuring stunning pastel colors, creative geometric shapes reminiscent of Escher himself and a stunning, rooftop pool.

🗝 It was designed by the famous architect called Ricardo Bofill, who was several works of architecture spread all around Spain.

⚠️ Disclaimer: the Muralla Roja is a private apartment complex - to visit the building you must stay at one of the properties located inside - it is not open access to tourists and drones are not allowed 🚫 please respect the locals and don’t break any rules ⚠️You can find more details on my last Muralla Roja reel.

☀️ If you visit, definitely take some time to explore Calpe and do the amazing hike to the top of the Peñón de Ifach.

The most beautiful tradition in Catalunya | a love letter 💌 to Sant Jordi

What do you think of this tradition? Save for later 📝

Today is Sant Jordi, here in Barcelona. For those of you that don’t know, Catalans don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. Instead, on April 23 of each year, it has become tradition to gift the ones you love with a book or a rose (book lovers and flower lovers this is your dream day!)

The entire city comes alive with literature gatherings, cultural events, and community initiatives. If you’re ever in Barcelona around the 23rd of April I would highly recommend to check out Sant Jordi celebrations.
