Sunday 28 June 🐞🌿🐝 Land-ing in Relation Summer Market A day of exchange and a (re)turn to the land as a mode of liberatory and restorative practice. We eat together, create together, read together, play together. Everyone is welcome—please bring your kids, family, and friends! Some highlights of the day’s programme by several of our: ⋆. ݁ The Outsiders are organizing a grass weaving workshop for children, inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass, while Mirella Moschella invites participants to dye with purple corn. ⋆. ݁ 4 Siblings bring a selection of special seeds and prints; Leštnice introduces a playful and conversational element through a deck of cards; HKU MAFA students offer a collective art-making workshop including a spinning wheel, performance, and more. ⋆. ݁ We will share plenty of food! Maria Sujecka guides Polish pierogi-making together with her friends Barbara and Natalia. While-kitchening sets up a bakfiets (cargo bike) filled with delicious dishes and recipes. ⋆. ݁ Since we expect warm weather, Seasonal Neighbours prepare fermented drinks to refresh us all, namely borș and kvass! As part of the discurve elements throughout the day, we present the book launch of Walking_The Vacuum Landscape at 11:00. Later on at 16:00, the Library Reading Sessions continue upstairs, this time on land and belonging, with a collective input format. 🍚 Kitchen Talks: Care and Collective Learning with Nuraini Juliastuti & Reza Afisina at the Food Lab @lolalokaal Join researcher, writer, and KUNCI Study Forum & Collective co-founder Nuraini Juliastuti @generalworks_project for a shared Javanese meal and conversation inspired by her Domestic Notes project. Together we will prepare oseng tempe and urap urap, share food, and reflect on care, domestic life, collective learning, and everyday forms of knowledge. The gathering also features @afisina_r Reza Afisina —an artist, member of the Jakarta-based collective ruangrupa, and a lumbung member—who will focus on listening sessions with selected sound and music from his own practice and experience in West Java. Inspired by rituals, celebrations, and communal practices, the sound and music will accompany the meal, creating a sensory atmosphere through listening, spices, aromas, and food-based decorations. The meal includes white and yellow rice, urap-urap, telur balado, tahu bacem, and oseng tempe. Books and publications from KUNCI Study Forum & Collective will be available during the event. This is the final Kitchen Talks event of the season. All donations will support Kunci (http://kunci.or.id/), the independent cultural collective and learning platform based in Yogyakarta. We are thrilled to announce the publication of Unlearning Routines of the Impossible, a new book co-authored by artist and long-term Casco Art Institute collaborator Annette Krauss. The book features contributions from the Feminist Search Tools working group, Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide, Nancy Jouwe, KUNCI Study Forum & Collective, and Ferdiansyah Thajib. 📗 Book Launch: 15 February 2025, 15:00–18:00 📙 Reading Group: 16 January, 23 January, 6 February, and 13 February 2025, all from 17:00–19:00 / Casco HQ “What are the struggles, entanglements, and joys of practicing unlearning in predominantly Western contexts?”  Beginning in early 2025, we are organizing a reading group in preparation for the launch. Structured around four sessions, it provides participants with an opportunity to collectively engage with the book’s core themes and guiding questions. The sessions also draw connections with Unlearning Exercises: Art Organizations as Sites for Unlearning (2025/2018), of which the forthcoming book is the sister publication. To mark the official launch of Unlearning Routines of the Impossible, we invite you to join us at Casco on Saturday, 15 February. The day begins with an introduction, followed by a conversation with several collaborators and contributors exploring the book’s core ideas and propositions. The event concludes with a festive gathering to honor this long-awaited project. Additional program details are announced in early January. Beyond the launch at our office gallery, a series of book launches take place in the Netherlands, Vienna, and other locations. We are also excited to announce the republishing of Unlearning Exercises in a newly designed edition by Rosen Eveleigh. Copies of both sister publications are available for purchase at the event. Collective Reading Session #6 x Keti Koti (and PanAfrican) edition - on Thursday 2 July, 17:30   We conclude our last collective reading session of the season by situating Keti Koti in connection to other anti-colonial struggles from a PanAfrican approach.   By drawing from the role of Dutch colonialism in the African continent and the diaspora, we discuss not only reparations and expropriation but also learn about different forms of anti-colonial resistance and solidarity. From Suriname, South Africa and Curaçao, to Senegal, Ghana, Nubia and beyond, the materials that engage with connect various movements. In addition of reading and discussing the texts provided, images also become part of the materials to visualize negated and consciously erased histories. We provide (vegan) dinner and printouts of the reading materials (no need to read in advance), so please sign up by sending an email to nuria@casco.art to avoid waste. If you want to bring your own digital/reading device and prefer to have the PDF, please let us know so we could share it to you beforehand. New publication! Walking_The Vacuum Landscape is the outcome of a long-term artistic research project by Lo Yuen Ming and Chun Yao Lin, with contributions from Anitha Silvia and edited by Yee Ting Lau, published by Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons 🌿 Join us this Sunday, 28 June for the book launch (11:00–12:30). Presented in the form of a workshop led by the contributors, we collectively identify landscape images, unframing and unboxing archives as a decolonial act. We expand on classification as a spatial practice at the Casco Library in conversation with Yee Ting Lau. This is followed by a discussion on the disparity between personal and collective narratives, echoing the book's themes. 📗 Walking_The Vacuum Landscape investigates the construction of landscape not as a neutral geographical territory, but as a visual and epistemological system historically engineered by official archives, Western painting, and photography. This book wades into the fog of the present post-colonial landscape to exhume the missing roots buried in the (not-yet-shared) land, addressing the archival silences alongside the ongoing realities of displacement obscured by post-colonialism. The research is divided into two primary geographical and conceptual inquiries. The first part of the book navigates the plantation landscapes of East Java, unfolding as a fictionalized self-reflection grounded in decolonial thought. The second part shifts to the urban terrain of Surabaya, documenting the city through contemporary walking practices as a feminist spatial methodology to navigate and reclaim areas dominated by remaining Dutch colonial architecture. Moving alongside these texts, the landscape is presented photographically. By interweaving recent fieldwork photography with Dutch archives, the visual narrative traces the fractures in colonial terrain and confronts its archival silences. At its core, this book is a collective act of building inter-Asia solidarity for land-rights justice and social movements—a solidarity as fragile as moss, yet impossible to extinguish. In the last week of 'Frictional Conversations', we are hosting three workshops engaging with different aspects of the project, focusing in particular on questions of knowledge transmission, radical pedagogy, and archival dissidence. Join us on Sunday 28 June, 16:00–18:00 for Collective Reading Session #5 as part of the Summer Market: Land-ing in Relation. This session continues our series, this time in conversation with the vibrant day program that starts in the morning (check out the main post!). We move beyond focusing only on materials from the Casco Library as a reading resource, towards a collective, participatory input format, focusing on land, landscape, and belonging. All participants are encouraged to bring their own poems, books, and zines that connect to the themes. Personal pictures, maps, and physical archives can also be part of the session. Everyone will get the chance to contribute to our reading session with their own personal materials and resources, and we will collectively read and discuss them together. If you would like your chosen text(s) or images to be printed and shared with the group, please send them to nuria@casco.art preferably before 26 June. Don’t forget to also sign up via email so we can estimate the number of printouts needed! Join us on Saturday, 27 June, from 14:00 to 17:00 at BAK Basecamp for a creative workshop exploring the experiences of queer migrants through imagination and mapping. In this third and final workshop of the Queer Cartographies series, we will turn our attention to imagined landscapes that may not exist in the material world we inhabit. We will map and explore queer worlds we never got to live in, engaging with ideas that might seem impossible, naïve, or unrealistic. Think of the worlds you once drew as a child, or the landscapes that appear in your dreams. How have your experiences of queerness and migration shaped the places you long for, remember, or imagine? Which worlds feel out of reach in the present moment, and how might we insist on imagining and living them together anyway?
