Sometimes life be lifing. 🤷🏾‍♀️
At least it’s not dead right? 😅

It took some patience and finagling but I managed to get it out without losing any of these roots- which is a win in my book. ✅

Let’s see if it decides to 😵 now… blessed alocasias.

One of my other hobbies is watercolour painting and pencil drawing (wait - that’s two not one 🤔). I am forever fascinated by the naturally occurring beauty in the leaves of my plant collection - this one in particular blew me away.

Purchased as a teeny seedling last summer (ish) , from @lianthurium I was attracted to this @burgalfloweringfarmstead hybrid because of the Black Widow Michelle parentage; and with its other parent being Papillaminum x Magnificum which can produce some stunning spidery patterns (at least in the ones I have ) I figured I couldn’t go wrong.

While the hybrid is better known for its variegated form, I actually like this non variegated version. My goal was to see if I could keep it alive and grow it big and so far so good so I’m celebrating this win.

Ps. Yes I know I need to wipe these leaves. 🙈

Here’s my beloved Anthurium “KOS-Waroq “ a hybrid between the beautiful veined #KingOfSpades by #haliujih and the elongated Queen #anthuriumwarocqueanum

Unlike the Queen, I find this hybrid so easy to grow. I’ve had it in perlite (no drainage) for about 4 or 5 months now and it’s put out roots like crazy with no loss of leaves while acclimating to its new environment.

We’ve participated in several imports this year and during the most recent one with @rareleavesldn mum had the bright idea of rapidly transitioning the new import from high to ambient humidity - just to see if it could be done (and also because she’s run out of space in her cabinets and prop boxes 😅)

Here’s a quick look at how the (unlucky) plant has fared - comparing Days 1-2 (when it was kept in high humidity ) versus Day 10-12 when it has been moved into ambient for for about a week.

Don’t be like my mum and change the substrate as well. That’s a helluva lotta stress in quick succession for a plant that may already be in shock from travelling.

Generally speaking - the plant is doing well. Some crisping on the tips of the older leaves primarily due to a missed watering during the heatwave. We would have expected to lose some of those older leaves during the transition anyway so mum says she’s not worried. 🙈

A few snaps of some of my variegated velvet anthuriums recently imported via @rareleavesldn

Buying plants from abroad can be fraught with perils but having someone who knows the ropes (and the language) on your side can make things ten times smoother.

The plants arrived in coir and perlite and I’ll be transferring them to semi hydro(because that way I know I won’t overwater them).

I’m heavy handed with water whereas Izzie is a chronic underwaterer. We grow our plants in different substrates for this very reason. Her media is very moisture retentive and mine is not- my plants would die in her substrates because the conditions we grow our plants in differ greatly.
