✨Cold water swimming & Life after 60 ✨

I had no idea when the menopause took hold during my fifties that life could/would eventually get better.

18 months ago with the ‘Big 60’ approaching, I was overweight, had just had knee surgery, was struggling with migraines, a bad back, and was feeling pretty miserable.

I had dreams of owning a campervan and taking solo trips by the sea/lakes/rivers and recapture a love of cold water dipping/swimming that I had done in my twenties, and enjoying coastal path walks.

But in truth the thought of being seen in a swimming costume, let alone having the energy/ inclination to make it happen, was very much a dream.

I made a pact with myself to enter my 60s fitter and healthier….

In August, 2024 we bought Luna, a 2018 VW T6. She has helped kickstart this next stage of life …. She is my/our pride and joy, enjoying adventures both solo and together with Graham, my husband.

This month I had my 61st Birthday, and feel so much fitter and more alive than I did 18 months ago. Trips in Luna take me to places I have never explored before, both on the doorstep and further afield. The sense of freedom is like nothing else, finding peaceful spots in nature to stay and waking up to incredible views is magical, and makes me feel immensely grateful.

This post was not meant to be this open about changes in my life going forward, but once I started typing it just came tumbling out.
I wonder how many other people might have similar stories….. please let me know in the comments if any of this resonates with you ✨

This year I would love to experience more cold water dipping, so any recommendations for beautiful sea/river/lake locations would be fantastic. ✨

A campervan, a paddleboard and a weekend in Dorset with my youngest son 🤍

Ieuan and I based ourselves on the open spacious field @burnbakeforestlodges campsite before heading to beautiful Studland for a morning on the water.

There was paddleboarding for both of us, a cycle ride for Ieuan and a very welcome breakfast at the Sandy Salt Pig café @the_salt_pig.

I love my solo adventures in Luna, but sharing a weekend like this with my 25-year-old son felt especially precious. No elaborate plans—just sun, sea air, and special time together.

When you arrive at a campsite that feels a little bit like coming home… 🤍🌿

Fforest Fields is one of those places for me.

I’ve only ever stayed here out of season before — which, if I’m honest, is usually my favourite time to travel — so arriving in August and seeing it so much busier felt very different.

But I needn’t have worried.

I still found the peace and tranquillity I love here. Quiet mornings at my pitch, beautiful walks and trails straight from the campsite, evenings watching the sun go down and, best of all, plenty of peaceful moments out on the lake with my paddleboard. 🏄‍♀️

And I didn’t need to move Luna once.

Sometimes it isn’t about constantly searching for somewhere new. Sometimes it’s about returning to a place that simply makes you happy.

And Fforest Fields does exactly that for me. 💚

We’d been looking forward to this location and it was even better than we’d imagined. 🤍

Camping L’Ile aux Cygnes became our home for five incredible nights in the heart of our Europe road trip.

Waking up every morning to a 180° view across Lac du Bourget, clear turquoise blue water, mountains in the distance and Luna parked just metres from the lake felt very special.

This wasn’t just another campsite on our journey. It was our main destination, and one we’ll always remember.

If our lakeside pitch had been available for longer, we’d happily have stayed. Sadly it was fully booked, so after five unforgettable nights it was time to continue our adventure.

Some places simply leave you wanting one more sunrise.

First paddle on my own board.
Huge smile. 💙

I’ve spent months wondering if I’d ever be brave enough to buy my own board, having had a go on my son Callum’s board, and one other time on holiday in France.

Well… I finally did it.

Today was my very first outing on my own paddleboard, and within minutes i knew it was the right decision. I love it. 💙

I waited until the lake was empty of people, took my time and did it.
Just the sound of the water, fresh air, and the freedom that comes from trying something completely new.

At 61, I’m discovering that adventure doesn’t have an age limit. It’s about, “just giving it a go.”

Here’s to the start of many more paddles ….

One day in Colmar and I understand why everyone falls in love with it…

After driving through France, Camping de L’Ill was our base for exploring Colmar’s beautiful old town.

The biggest advantage? You can leave the campervan on your pitch and walk into the centre in around 25 minutes.

The campsite sits beside the river L’Ill making it a pleasant place to relax after a day sightseeing. However, it’s only fair to mention that there’s a major motorway (A35) on the opposite side of the river, and the traffic noise is noticeable day and night. For us, it was a compromise we were happy to make because of its convenient location, but it’s something worth knowing before you book.

Colmar itself completely stole our hearts. Colourful half-timbered houses, flower-filled canals, little cafés and so many beautiful corners to photograph.

Colmar completely exceeded all expectations… 🇫🇷

✨ Have you ever stumbled across a place that completely exceeded your expectations?

For us, that place was Vianden, Luxembourg. 🇱🇺

From wandering the colourful streets beside the River Our, to taking the chairlift high above the valley and exploring the breathtaking hilltop castle, every corner felt like stepping into a fairytale.

We spent two peaceful nights camping beneath the castle, and it’s one of those places I’ll definitely return to.

If you’re planning a European road trip or campervan adventure, don’t overlook Luxembourg. Vianden is proof that some of the most beautiful places are often the ones people drive straight past.

The moment you know your VW campervan adventure in Europe has truly begun… 🇫🇷🚐

After crossing on Le Shuttle, our first stop was Camping La Paille Haute. Nothing overly fancy— but an unexpected large, peaceful pitch, a chance to slow down, and that wonderful feeling of knowing the next two weeks are full of new places to discover.

After a warm welcome from the friendly only- French speaking owners, we unpacked Luna, enjoyed a relaxing evening drink outside, and started our European road trip exactly as we love to… slowly.

Sometimes the first night isn’t about sightseeing. It’s simply about arriving, switching off and appreciating the freedom that campervan travel gives you.

Have you got a favourite first-night stop in France after crossing from the UK? I’d love some new ideas for next time.

“Well…it’s been a while! 🚐

I have been caught up living the moments rather than posting ……

Over the last two months Luna and I have been busy exploring, both solo and with Graham. We had an epic 2 week road trip in Europe, then some solo trips in Mid Wales, walking the coastal paths around Pembrokeshire, and most recently spending ten wonderful days discovering South Cornwall.

I’ve got hundreds of photos, videos and stories to share, so if you love quiet campsites, beautiful coastlines, coffee stops and slow campervan adventures… please come along for the journey.
