FLOWERS AS ART. FLOWERS IN ART.
In Paris.

Anemone. The windflower. Originating from the Greek word anemos, meaning wind. Their center structure perhaps the densest pigment and closest you can get to black in the flower world. Anemones usher in an air of mystery and immediately bring a certain mood to arrangements. Maybe because of their semblance to an eye, they are known in many cultures to ward off evil, as a protective flower. In ancient myth, they sprang from the tears of Aphrodite mourning her lover Adonis. 🩸 taken in Paris, France by @whiledflowers

From yesterday’s rainy day in Paris. I walked under the bronze trees of the Champs Élysées to the Petit Palais to see what I could find for floral paintings. The petit jardin captured more of my attention and I am swooning daily over the most impossibly beautiful hydrangeas that puncturing the dark with this illuminating shade of blue. They fit well with the rainy night.

You are looking for blush. Not blush as in precisely pink, more like the whisper of peach and pink as skin, as sand. Maybe it is the dominant in the color palette, or perhaps it is seated next to deeper, moodier hues such as burgundy. You need the “Quicksand” rose.

In Paris. Dreams do come true. Roaming the halls of the Louvre the other day and I stumbled across a floral painting I was sure was from one of the Dutch masters. I was delighted to discover someone new: Andrea Belvedere from Italian’s baroque set. Now that I am settled in my new home, I will be sharing this and more floral symbolism throughout the arts on my blog in the notes section.

A heavy rain has come to wash the final enchantments of summer away. It’s always hard saying goodbye to rose season. But I have a feeling the next one will be the most magical one yet.. taken in Kelleher Rose Garden by @whiledflowers

The Dahlia. A robust bloom that carries as similarly strong symbolism as the rose. Victorians viewed dahlias as symbols of dignity and polite grace. Others say they are a message of lifelong bonds, making them a favorable addition to a wedding bouquet.

This time of year in particular they are in high demand and will bloom in New England gardens well into the fall. With their many colors and sizes (look up “dinner plate dahlia”) you could build an interesting arrangement from the varying depths of this flower alone.

While they famously come in an array of blush and neutral colors, their harvest season colors are perfect for an autumn event. taken in New England by @whiledflowers

The materials matter but the tools can be simple. This is perhaps the most charming thing about art. The artistic process on the other hand is another world entirely..

But as for floral design, a table and some really good shears is all you really need. The flowers do the heavy lifting. by @whiledflowers

Summer left the room this weekend. The rose hips by the ocean are ready to be harvested. The crickets have been especially loud throughout the day to get their last chirps into the humid air, and the flowers are drying and spent.
