If ever I am in LIC and have a little time to kill, I go visit “Meeting,” the #jamesturrell exhibit at @momaps1. Turrell was a light artist, part of the Light and Space movement out west in the 60s, and is known for his pieces like this one that comprise his Skyscape series. This piece is crafted inside the museum building to have a seemingly seamless boundary between the ceiling and an open aperture to the sky. The exhibit is ever-changing as cloud patterns evolve, color transitions with time, and the sun’s path moves by degrees. Because the portal’s sharp edge frames this one piece of sky, it focuses the viewer to contemplate and appreciate the natural beauty that is often forgotten or taken for granted in its mundanity.

Reminder! @momaps1 is free! I highly encourage you to take a moment to sit and meditate with the sky the next time you’re in LIC!

@bunneyster representing @eragymastoria in her first ever smoker as our first female fighter ! A Muay Thai smoker is an informal exhibition fight between gyms- no scoring, no winning! Fighters do them to get ring experience before going for amateur competition. @bunneyster trained hard for this specific fight for many weeks and leveled way the hell up. The whole gym helps ready her too - everyone ramped up sparring in preparation for her to deal and receive harder hits. Everyone was black and blue in solidarity (jk!)! 💪 Proud of her, proud of our community, can’t wait to cheer you on for the next one!

Just started working on the new Exorcist movie starring Scarlett Johannson and Jacobi Jupe from Hamnet. I was THRILLED when I found it it shoots here in Astoria at the new Wildflower Studios, developed by Robert De Niro. Take a peek inside this giant black box! It’s only been open for about a year and a half so it’s looking fresh in here! Loving the outdoor patio by the water especially- really makes lunch a game changer. :)

Came for the joust, stayed for the surprisingly good 🍗! Muay Thai girlies take a field trip because we decided @medieval_times is boxing adjacent. We cheered for the green knight even though he turned out to be a traitor to the crown. He was deliciously vicious in battle though so we all became traitors with him. Vive la révolution!

First show up is @stonbroadway ! Visually stunning! Beautiful design and a great companion piece to the show. Unfortunately, they poured their hearts into an incredible opening that the rest of the show could never quite compete with. The stage magic is really fun, definitely recommend for fans for the show!

@holdontoyourbuttsuk This is a show that I think started at Edinburgh Fringe. It is recreating Jurassic Park shot for shot onstage with two actors and a live foley artist. It’s unhinged in the best possible way. It finds its way to stages around town periodically, I saw it at @sohoplayhousenyc

@sixbroadway is a joyous show in which Henry VIII’s six wives are reimagined as pop stars competing to win a competition on who had it worse. The music is great! This is my second time watching it!

Sleeping Beauty at @nycballet

@burnoutparadisenyc takes place entirely on four treadmills with a cast that is running the entire time while also performing various escalating tasks. Each treadmill represents an aspect of an artist’s life that they are supposed to be doing concurrently: day job, applying for an artist grant, their actual art, and leisure/life tasks. If it comes back, go see it immediately!

@focalpointbeer had a screening of the indie horror-comedy movie, @unclepeckerhead. It’s about a punk band that needs a van driver for their tour and they accidentally recruit a guy that turns into a people eating monster after midnight. Shenanigans ensue! The cast has a real punk band so this is them playing after the screening.

@newworldstages is doing @spellingbeenyc! Get ready to laugh and cry.

So hyped for this one! One of my favorite shows sung by legendary @rachelziegler and @benplatt. This one was also music directed by the composer himself, @jasonrobertbrown, so it was a truly lovely treat. Justice for Cathy! taken in Radio City Music Hall by @whimsicallylit

@zkrohn and I checking out the #danflavin exhibit “Grids” at @davidzwirner. Like all light art, pictures cannot capture the reality of experiencing them because this type of art challenges the relationship between the eyes and the brain when the correct amount of time is applied. These grids function almost like a Magic Eye- look at the grid long enough and the colors of the fluorescent shift into a completely different hue. The color washes that are created behind the grids are at times completely different colors than the tubes in the grid due to color mixing of specific points on the color spectrum. Dan Flavin was an incredible light artist that worked with commercial fluorescents. To enjoy his work, please remember to slow down and take your time!

Did y’all catch the #williamkent “Trust the Peeple!” exhibit at @riccomaresca gallery in February? In the William Kent carved discarded school blackboards into slate stencils and screen printed political propaganda onto found commercially made textiles in the 60s. The juxtaposition between the bold masculine messaging and style of the print against the soft midcentury floral bedsheets that they are printed on tells an interesting story about who is given the power to speak and who is silenced but greatly affected.

Revisiting the @christopherpaynephoto exhibit, “Made in America” at @cooperhewitt. Christopher Payne is interested in documenting industrial fabrication and the skilled makers that are experts in the complex machinery specific to their part of the fabrication process. Also at the museum, a listening room with the large-scale audio system sculpture installation, “HiFi Pursuit Listening Room Dream 3” by @devonojas.

Christmas in Colorado…someone once said that all this family does is eat.
