A Man on A Mission
That’s how best I can describe our friend Bob Boudreau. I’m sure many here
who have known him longer might agree, although we might not be recalling
the same mission. I myself can’t remember all of them and that’s covering just
the last 15 years or so.
A few highlights come to mind immediately. In his clean cut early days in
Prague, his friends here caught him on a TV series as a prize-fight referee. He
didn’t even tell us and when we noticed, he smiled modestly “yeah that’s
me.” Later, people would come into the bar, stare at Bob oddly and then ask
“Aren’t you the guy that blew up in the restaurant” in the Czech GangsterKa
series? Today when Bob enacts his weekly monologue, someone at a table
nearby perks up, turns their head and then confronts him “Aren’t you the
Inquisitor on the Kingdom Come” fantasy role-playing game?
In the before times, the lore is of a man who ran multiple marathons, but
none faster than the one he ran through the jungle of Vietnam. A man who as
a news anchorman, was as famous in his major metropolitan city as he was
infamous in the divorce courts. Though it didn’t take the bravery of serving in
the war against communism in Vietnam, coming to Prague and leaving all that
Houston history behind required a not insignificant amount of guts.
And here, generous to a fault, and giving a larger percent of his net worth
away than many millionaires, tonight is only the latest example of his giving.
Turning a party for himself to benefit others. If you think you needed
something from Bob that you didn’t get, it means only one thing:
You didn’t ask.
Somewhere in the middle of all this came his production of The Man from La
Mancha with which Bob brought a message to dream “The Impossible
Dream” to his community in Prague.
Result: Nerves wracked. Finances emptied. Creative Triumph.
And I know for a fact that Bob has dreamt the impossible dream, fought the
unbeatable foe and borne the unbearable sorrow. Now all that’s left is to
right the unrightable wrongs. Of which, there are too many for one man.
But that won’t stop THIS man from trying. That’s his mission.

Only after my $50 purchase for what would have most likely been a $6.50 retail price bottle sold at a US military on-base PX somewhere overseas did I learn all the details. 750 ml marked export meant most likely not travel retail (would be I liter but this is 750ml). The estate was a Polish post war immigrant born in the 1920s or 30s, so perhaps this bottle came from a US Army of Occupation base in Cold War Germany as a gift for the owner. The glass codes indicate blown in Atlanta, Georgia in 1983 and the back side of label visible through the clear liquid says bottled that year in August. Little or no evaporation, perfect label condition and fill level above the tax stamp. And I just came for a meal. 😀

I was at a barbecue at a friend of a friends. He says “I collect clocks I buy at estate sales”

After a tour of his antiques, he says “let’s have a drink” and the apologetically “I’ve only got regular Jack Daniels”

With his hands on the bottle neck he’s just about to turn the cap and crack it. “Whoah!” I say. “You don’t want to do that…It doesn’t look right” grabbing the bottle out of his hands…

“It might be worth something” to which he replies “what could it be worth? It’s not that old. It’s got a bar code”

“Did you buy this at an estate sale?”

“Yeah, usually I don’t buy but there was some unopened tequila. They said take everything that’s left. The jack came with it”

I put down 50 bucks. “It’s yours,” he says.

Turns out it’s from 1983. Apparently very collectible because it was before Brown Forman lowered the proof from 90 to 87 in 1987 and it was on the last few years of ATF excise bottle stamps.

That same day I lost the @ohlq bottle lottery. Or did I?
