March is a time for Spring, Madness and most importantly the celebration of Women and their impact in history. Let’s showcase and shoutout some tremendous women in the whisk(e)y industry! I’d like to start by touting some of my favorite single malts- @theglendronachofficial @benriach & @glenglassaugh. All being crafted and curated by Dr Rachel Barrie…
Dr. Rachel Barrie is one of the most respected figures in the Scotch whisky industry and serves as Master Blender for the Brown-Forman single malt portfolio, including BenRiach, The GlenDronach, and Glenglassaugh. A chemist by training from the University of Edinburgh, she began her career as a research scientist at the Scotch Whisky Research Institute before rising to become one of the world’s leading whisky makers. Over more than three decades in the industry, Barrie has tasted and evaluated over 150,000 casks and has helped craft numerous award-winning single malts. In recognition of her contributions to Scotch whisky, she received an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Edinburgh and has been inducted into Whisky Magazine’s Hall of Fame. I raise a glass to honor senseless loss. I raise a glass to all the feeling and reeling. I raise a glass to the hope and knowing we are stronger than this and will find our way back. I raise a glass to community and love. This is America’s spirit and heart is what fills this glass. Cheers all …🥃 not 🧊 by @whiskeychess

If you are ever in Dublin, please do yourself a favor and sip with the gentlemen at @thecorkscrewdublin . This is one of their tasty casks on hand from @loughreedistill- a single grain 15yr old (8yr bourbon and almost 7 in oloroso). 46% and just amazing! The best single I’ve tasted to date- very short list, but incredible nonetheless. Cheers all! Slainte🥃 by @whiskeychess

My week in Ireland continued to Cork to visit @midletondistilleryexperience, where the they showed a true walk through time. How things were and what they’d become. Make no mistake, this is a factory and it makes whiskey!

An amazing week in Ireland, started with a few days in Dingle. A quaint fishing village that has adapted to B&Bs and wonderful hospitality. @dingledistillery launched their new expressions (hoping to hit US soil in the spring of 26).
-The 10 yr Single Malt
-Pot Still
-Single Malt

All bourbon cask and then finished in a variety of wine casks. Tremendous whiskies and an incredible experience. Thank you team Dingle and Hotalings! by @whiskeychess

National Bourbon Heritage Month rolls on!
Let’s discuss one of the most sought after categories in bourbon- Wheated bourbon!

Wheated bourbon is a type of bourbon whiskey that uses wheat as the secondary grain in its mash bill, rather than the more common rye.
All bourbon must be made from at least 51% corn, but the remaining grains are up to the distiller.

Wheat gives the whiskey a softer, smoother, and sweeter flavor profile compared to the spicier bite of rye bourbons.
	•	Flavor: Wheated bourbons are known for being softer, creamier, and more accessible — ideal for newcomers and connoisseurs alike.
	•	Rarity: For a long time, wheated bourbons were relatively rare, adding to their allure.

As Bourbon Heritage Month continues, so do my rambles….
Today, the single barrel- in my opinion one of the best examples of wood’s effect on distillate and the true skill of a distillery and its blenders. A barrel can sit in a Rickhouse and be right next to another barrel and be night and day in flavor. The essence of your favorite “batches” can be found in each single barrel, but different personalities really shine through each barrel! Each stave acts as a single thumbprint influenced by the liquid inside being forced in and out by the outside world- the location in the rickhouse, the weather outside, time etc. All of these factors can lead to one the easiest to find unicorns out there- the single barrel. Cheers to America’s native spirit🥃

Let’s have some fun this BHM-
HIGH RYE BOURBON- a high-rye bourbon is a type of bourbon whiskey that includes a higher percentage of rye in its grain bill (the mash bill) than typical bourbons, usually ranging from 20% to 35% or more, with the remaining mash bill being at least 51% corn, as required by law. This increased rye content provides a distinct, spice-forward flavor profile with notes of pepper, cinnamon, and mint, offering a spicy bite that balances the inherent sweetness of the corn
@basilhayden is a tribute to a man who bore the name and loved a higher amount of rye in his bourbon mash. He was everyone’s favorite Old Grandad. Cheers all!
