So I made a costume out of newspaper… If you’re not familiar with @booksandburlesquenyc , it’s a show where you are assigned a book to read and then challenged to make an act inspired by the book. Furthermore, the authors come to the show and read excerpts from their books. It’s this added twist, that makes the show really cool.

In short, my book was about Margaret Anderson, a magazine publisher in the 1920s, who challenged censorship of the time, to publish dirty writings. It was Art.

My creative process started with simply, “I’ll do a classic burlesque act.” Bra, panty, corset, panel skirt, gloves… “I just need to find a snappy song that makes sense.” I have no idea how the newspaper popped into my head, thus inspiring black & white (undergarments I already had), and OH! my new weighted veil from @gaealady.silkcreatrix , which had not yet found an act. Turns out it’s really fun to fly to punk music!

As far as how I handled the newspaper, I don’t know man, it’s like it told me how to fold it.

His erudite and fascinating new biography “A Danger To the Minds of Young Girls” about the life and times of queer editorial icon Margaret C. Anderson who fought to publish James Joyce “Ulysses” was a joy to read. We love how this book highlights feminist counterculture at a time of extreme social conservatism and censorship and stresses the importance of continued advocacy as writers and readers for LBGTQ+ rights and freedom of expression.

💃🏻 @whiskeyjules, your favorite nightcap, is a classically trained ballet dancer who can be found every last Wednesday of the month at the Moxy hotel, Williamsburg for burlesque bingo. Her interpretation of Adam’s book is inspired by the parallels between censorship of words and the censorship of bodies.

Epic! I have been to a lot of vintage-dress events but I had never been to @dandywellington ‘s Easter Egg Strut. It was NEXT LEVEL! So many incredible hats, beautiful true and “new” vintage. So many different interpretations and eras. Inspiring!

I have a lot of feels after my first competition. And a lot of gratitude. Thank you @hollywoodbqfest for seeing me, my act, worthy of competition. I have many more thoughts and thank you but for now, I want to give a shoutout to @taliacp , the original owner of this dress.
