HIDW [HowInDaWorld] Did they come up with da name 'October'? 👀👇🏻 ➕🧘🏼🧘🏻💪🏻JICC[JustInCaseCurios] #curious #octoberfest #8 #10 #numa The drama is that October is a lie: the name means "eighth month" (from Latin octo), and it has been sitting in tenth place for over two thousand years. The early Roman calendar had ten months and started in March, so October really was number eight. Then January and February were added, and in 153 BC the start of the civil year moved to January. Everything got bumped two slots, and nobody fixed the names. The juicy🧃☕part is how many emperors tried to rename it and failed: Tiberius was offered September for himself and October for his mother Livia. He declined, reportedly asking what the Senate would do once there were thirteen Caesars. Domitian renamed it "Domitianus" after himself, since it was his birth month. The name was scrapped after he was assassinated. Commodus renamed all twelve months after his own titles, with October becoming "Herculeus". That was also undone after his assassination. 🌘🌗🌓🌒How in da world did we get the word MOON?🫵🏼👉🏻🌚 Alright kid, listen up. Old English *mōna*, from Proto-Germanic *mēnô*, from the ancient Indo-European root *mē-* — "to measure." Before clocks, before Dunks had a drive-thru, the moon was the measuring stick. One lap around = one MONTH. Yeah — moon and month are the same word, one's just dressed up for work. 📏 Same root gave ya "measure," Latin *mensis*, and "menstrual." All of it: counting time by lookin' up. Wicked ancient. Now the butt part. 🍑 "Moon" has meant your backside since the 1700s — two pale round cheeks, you do the math. But the verb — *to moon* somebody, drop trou outta the Camry on Route 1 — that's 1960s American college slang. So the sky moon got named for measurin' time, and the other moon got named for... lookin' like it. Science, kid. Moral: if somebody moons ya in the Sumner Tunnel, they're technically just showin' ya a calendar. 🎻 How in da world[HIDW][JICC] did we get the word VIOLIN? Yo. It literally means "little viola." The Italians took *viola*, tacked on *-ino* (the cute ending), and boom — *violino*. So every violin is basically a baby viola. Wicked small. 🍼 And *viola*? That one goes way back to Medieval Latin *vitula*, a stringed instrument, probably tied to *vitulari* — "to rejoice" — and Vitula, the Roman goddess of joy. So the thing's named after the good feelin' it gives ya. Not bad, Rome. Plot twist, kid: that same root took the long way up to Old English as *fithele* → FIDDLE. Violin and fiddle are cousins from the same neighborhood who just talk different. In Italian that bench was a banca — and the bench became the business. Bench → banca → BANK. That's it. Your checking account is named after patio furniture. 🪑 Now the juicy part. When a money lender couldn't pay his debts, the story goes that the authorities marched over and smashed his bench in front of everybody. Banca rotta — "broken bench." Say it fast: banca rotta… bancarotta… BANKRUPT. 💥 So here's our favorite tale. In the 1340s Florence's two biggest money houses, the Bardi and the Peruzzi, lent the King of England a fortune to fund his war. He shrugged and didn't pay. Benches broken, city shaken, everyone convinced Florence was finished. But one family had been watching, learning, and keeping its money close — the Medici.
