Highland Park releases its oldest whisky expression to date

The rare release has been created to celebrate Highland Park’s 225th anniversary, and will be available in the UK from Berry Bros. & Rudd and The Whisky Shop from 23 February with an RRP of £39,000.

Highland Park’s oldest expression to date was originally laid down in 1968, four refill butts and six refill hogsheads were combined in February 2008 and refilled into first fill European sherry butts, where the whisky continued to mature. Since 2008, the final 14 years of maturation have taken place in ex-sherry casks.

The 225 bottles have been created by Highland Park master whisky maker Gordon Motion. He said of the new release: “Representing a quarter of Highland Park’s life, we felt it was a fitting way to mark our 225th anniversary; born and crafted in the heart of Orkney.”

The £39,000 Highland Park 54 Year Old release consists of a bespoke embossed bottle of the 54 Year Old whisky, a presentation box made of Scottish oak wood.

📰 🥃 Rare whiskies are being sold for huge amounts at auction as interest grows!

When Gordon McIntosh cleared out his father’s Edinburgh house after his death and found some Scotch whisky under the stairs he thought little of it.

His father had worked in the whisky industry for 50 years and the bottle of 12-year-old Port Ellen Islay whisky “never really stood out as something special”. He only realised how wrong he was when, after being persuaded to sell it at auction, it fetched £100,000.

McIntosh shared the proceeds from the bottle, one of only 40 made to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Islay 40 years ago, with his brother so that they could help their children on to the property ladder.

🥃 The first bottle @gordon_macphail of the world's oldest single malt Scotch whisky has been auctioned off for £142,000 (€ 167500) which will be used to re-wild the Caledonian forest.

Gordon and MacPhail (distillery at Speyside @speysidewhiskies) released 250 of the 80-year-old whisky decanters and it was sold by Sotheby's in Hong Kong to raise cash for Trees For Life who grow 100,000 rare and native trees each year.

The whisky, distilled at @theglenlivet Distillery, was poured into its cask on February 3 1940 under the watch of George Urquhart and his father John.

The curving core of the 70cl decanter had to be individually hand-blown by experienced artisans overseen by Glencairn Crystal Studio.

With over six generations of whiskey-producing tradition, William Grant & Sons is looking to make the most out of this auction in hopes of raising over £1 million GBP for Scottish charities.

William Grant is donating a lot from each of its distilleries to The Distillers One of One charity auction - Glenfiddich: The 1950s, Ladyburn 1966 David Bailey one-off John Lennon edition and The Balvenie 1964 single bottle release. Each is said to represent a “once-in-a-lifetime” whisky acquisition from the 1950s and 1960s, which were seen as pivotal decades in the world of Scotch whisky.

The 'Oldest Currently Known Whisky Bottle' Will Be Auctioned Off in June
Originally believed to be from 1850, carbon dating suggests the whisky is from 1763 to 1803. From June 22 to 30, the Boston-based Skinner Auctioneers will be auctioning off a bottle of Old Ingledew Whisky being billed as "the oldest currently known whisky bottle." The front of the brown bottle features embossed lettering stating that it's from Evans & Ragland in La Grange, Georgia, while the back features a typed note taped to the glass that begins, "This Bourbon was probably made prior to 1865."

Regardless of the liquid itself, the bottle is said to have quite a storied history. The taped label states that it came from the cellar of financier John Pierpoint Morgan. Skinner Auctioneers continues the story, saying that John's son, Jack Morgan, "gifted this bottle to James Byrnes of South Carolina and two other bottles to Franklin D. Roosevelt—a distant cousin to Morgan—and Harry S. Truman, for Christmas, c. 1942-1944." Byrnes had a remarkable political run, serving as a Congressman, Senator, and Supreme Court Justice before being chosen by Roosevelt as Director of War Mobilization during World War II, then serving as Secretary of State under Truman, and ending his career as Governor of South Carolina from 1951 to 1955. It was apparently during this final period when Byrnes gifted the bottle to his "close friend and drinking buddy, Francis Drake." But funnily enough, Skinner completes the story by stating, "Drake and his descendants, being exclusively Scotch drinkers, safeguarded the bottle for three generations."

Gordon & MacPhail is demonstrating its commitment to the north business community by awarding more than 90 per cent of its £20 million new distillery investment to local firms.

The firm, which is developing new distillery The Cairn near Grantown-on-Spey, has awarded contracts for work as varied as earthworks and scaffolding to companies based in Moray, Highland and Aberdeenshire.

Scheduled to open in spring 2022, The Cairn Distillery will include a visitor experience, tasting rooms, retail space and bistro.

Run through online auction house Whisky Auctioneer, the sale comprises more than 25 expressions that have been donated by whisky ambassadors from across Scotland

The sale will feature whiskies including Auchentoshan 1966 44 Years Old, Glenglassaugh 42 Years Old, Chivas Regal The Icon and a 2005 Ardbeg bottling, as well as expressions from GlenDronach and Ardnamurchan.

Alongside the rare spirits, whisky fans will be able to bid for experiences including a Glenfarclas tasting, which includes a private tasting of Glenfarclas’ Five Decades of Family Casks, and a tasting with independent bottler Douglas Laing.

The auction will run on Whisky Auctioneer from 23 December until 11 January.
