Hi All!

I'm rarely post, but I thought it was worth it for this huge announcement.

Many of you know, I'm an Open Water Swimmer here in Seattle, and our community is full of world-class athletes and all-around amazing humans.

I started a podcast - That Wasn't The Plan @thatwasnttheplan_podcast - a few months ago. And the one and only US Ice Swimming Distance Record Holder, Melissa Kegler, is our latest guest!

Part 1 of her episode "Ice Mermaid" is out now. Part 2 will be released next Thursday (complete with photos of her record breaking swim).

What a fucked up magical year!✨✨
Last year on this day, I was diagnosed with ER+ & PR+ Invasive Ductal Carcinoma & DCIS breast cancers (2 kinds), and what a journey it's been thus far.
- 1 Biopsy
- 3 Lumpecomites (surgery)
- 2 mammograms
- 3 ultrasounds
- 1 Echocardiogram
- 1 Port placement surgery
- 1 Wire insertion surgery
- 1 Wire insertion mammogram
- 6 Lymph nodes removed (surgery)
- 4 Chemotherapy sessions
- 5 Radiation tattoos
- 2 Radiation simulations
- 26 Radiation sessions
- 5 Radiation boosts (TBC)
- 1 Port removal surgery
- 1 Upperbody CT Scan
- 1 Endoscopy
- Countless blood draws
- 8 Viles of blood that went missing 🫣😳
- 1 Genetic blood test
- 100+ trips to the hospital/doctors' appointments
- Self-care 24/7
- So much gratitude to all my caregivers

I'm forgetting plenty, but this is a decent-sized list. Cancer is an obstacle course of waiting, uncertainty, complete exhaustion, laughing, crying, needles, fear, loneliness, learning, nausea, low O2 levels, aches, shakiness, machines, and a plethora of discomforts and surrealism. It's waking up every day trying and hoping you'll survive the day intact - trying not to shit your pants anytime the hospital calls.

I'm beyond grateful for all my friends and family who have rearranged their schedules to take me to surgeries, chemotherapy, doctor's appointments and showing up in the most beautiful and unexpected ways I could ever have imagined.
Many women don't have a complete response to treatment. Mothers, partners, daughters, sisters, friends, aunts - it's heartbreaking. I send love to all cancer patients and hope for a cure soon for Stage IV. 💕

I write this with sweaty palms as I await 2 test results that should be coming in anytime now.

P.S. The GoFundMe link has quite literally saved me from having to sell my house and moving to who knows where. Cancer is insanely expensive, and I'm endlessly thankful for your donations.
You helped keep me alive and somewhat sane! I always joke that you must be rich to get sick in this country, and it's proven true.

#worldcancerday is a tremendous opportunity for us all to unite in the push for a cancer-free future.

Scientists are making significant advances with treatments and vaccines, but we need to take agency for our health and well-being.

There is no better opportunity to reflect on your health and engage in more mindful daily practices to help make a positive, impactful change in your life.
