Small Talk has been out for a few days now and it’s been deeply moving to see people finally connecting with the whole thing as it was intended. Trying to sum it up in an instagram caption feels like a bit of a rabbit hole to me but sometimes when you work with smart managers they ask for track by track descriptions and thoughts on the album in advance so other people on your team can get a good sense of what the record means to you. I went back and read through mine last night and this sentence rang true to me:

“It’s been almost 11 years since Max and I started writing the first Whitney songs and although I never could have predicted that this creative partnership would go on to shape over one-third of my entire life, I feel like this album does a beautiful job of identifying why it has.”

We decided to make this record with no outside producer because we trusted that we could navigate the multiple years of highs and lows and breakthroughs and self doubt and political chaos and music industry struggle that it takes to make a record nowadays. And we were lucky enough to do that with a community of our bandmates and best friends. Ziyad Asrar is a true shining light in this world and although he’s already been crucial to so many Whitney songs it was about damn time to finally dive in and make an entire record together. Z Engineered, Mixed, and Co-Produced the entire record (as well as a couple co-writes) Malcolm Brown Co-Produced and played on every track. Whitney Johnson and Macie Stewart played viola and violin respectively all over the record. JJ Kirkpatrick and Will Miller played trumpet all over the record. Colin Croom ripped the pedal steel. Brian Seyler ripped the saxophone. Vivian McConnell came through with the flute. Heba Kadry tied it together with a beautiful master. And last but not least the increeeeedible Madison Cunningham blessed us with vocals (!!!)

Lastly, want to give a gigantic shout out to our manager Anna Benefield and the rest of the Spinning Top team who put so much care into every last detail of this release. We are so lucky to be working with y’all <3 by @whitneyband
