I was 17 when I first saw Rainbow. She was nostalgia and futurism, creativity and consumption, longing and resistance. So when she agreed to sit for my Archibald entry, I set out to paint my ultimate muse.

But in person, between the lenses and the brushstrokes, I realised I wasn’t painting the muse I had shaped in my mind over a decade. I was painting my mirror. Rainbow reflects my heritage, my complexities, my pain, sorrow, hope, and fire — things I hadn’t yet fully acknowledged, or didn’t know how to hold.

I painted Banquet as a tribute to my great inspiration, Rainbow Chan — a way of saying to Australians with cross-cultural identities what I didn’t hear at 17: I see you.

But to me, it’s also a self-portrait. In painting this, I saw me too. taken in Art Gallery of New South Wales by @whitneyduan
