Grand Traverse: 4:18am, August 26th

The yellow glow of headlights leading me through the early morning calm of a starlit Wyoming sky. Ever so slowly coming about my wits and into a more wakeful state. Wavering over the anticipated trajectory of the day that lie ahead. But also certain of my excitement to be among a scale of terrain this immense, piecing together this scattered puzzle that’s been trapped in my head. Soon to be relying solely on my own inputs. Discovering the most efficient way to move through it all. Solo climbing sans rope, while remaining within my comfort and ability level- the most important tether to have. I was going to take a stab at traversing the skyline of peaks that stand beside the Grand Teton solo, unsupported and nearly all onsight.

In the few days prior I had refamiliarized myself with the routes I would be using to climb the E face of Teewinot, the Owen Spalding route of the Grand Teton, and the N ridge of the Middle Teton. But every single pitch, down climb, move, crack, chimney and ledge that lie between Teewinot and the Grand as well as from the South Teton to Nez Perce was going to be an attempt at the unknown.

I felt unsure of sharing a bit more of my writing than usual on Instagram. Much more continued below in the comments if you’d like… taken in Dornan's by @whoischop

the dog days out of summers way.
temps more agreeable to be up high all day.
finding streams to fill water is simply a nay.
an absence of snow shows each rock of gray.
sunlight begins to falter, winter nearing its say.
along that next ridgeline go out and play.
you’ve read this whole rhyme now get on, don’t stay. taken in Aspen, Colorado by @whoischop

a little playbook, if you will, of what I myself am calling the Casablanca traverse. over 13 miles of ridge line with nearly 13 thousand feet of vertical gain connecting four fourteeners and remaining above 13 thousand feet for more than ninety percent of the romp by @whoischop

winter blues🩵

this incredible little valley really does overflow with so many amazing humans and such an expansiveness of terrain to make for lasting imprints on ourselves. Experiences that I can always feel especially grateful for stem from the abundance of beauty seen, smiles worn, lessons or skills acquired along the way and the continuity of motion my body provides to chase this life. It can sometimes feel much simpler for me to keep amongst myself in this pursuit, and just get to it. But it is absolutely all the more rewarding, when these moments can be shared with others seeking out the same🤟 taken in Maroon Bells by @whoischop

really sorry you didn’t get to see us shred this year, winter.

come to think of it… the video might be longer than winters presence this season. is that too harsh? can’t say I’d blame ya if you’re finding yourself ready for a change of pace with summer. I finally stopped trying to force the tour in search of cold snow a few weeks back. didn’t share much from my winter so here’s a long recap of some of my days out in the backcountry with friends. goofy, challenging, eager to explore new zones and everything in between taken in Aspen, Colorado by @whoischop

Spent the day up by the bells hopping down this ultra scenic line feeding into maroon lake. Getting eyes on it from previous outings up that way in the weeks prior, I felt the existing ribbon would be good to go after one significant dump of snow. Making it skiable and maybe even enjoyable or worthwhile. Is winter on in the elks? hardly. Would this line ski better with more patience for snow accumulation to fill by spring? absolutely! I think it was more about scratching an itch to ski something steeper, checking out a whole new approach for Sievers from maroon crk road and more than anything capitalizing and making a day of these infrequent drops of snow we’ve been having all season. Part obsession in seeing this line from the top while running the Willow traverse last June. Another part in keeping my stoke for this winter alive through consistent travel among some of the backyards test pieces. Keeping creative in ways to continue motion in the mountains all the while still twiddling my thumbs awaiting a soon to come arrival from winter like everyone else in the West🤞 taken in Maroon Bells by @whoischop
