And that’s the last you’ll see of this old face in 2025.
I’ve been documenting my appearance on December 31st for every year since 2012 now, and probably will until I forget. Thing is, this is my last year of my twenties and that… almost hurts a little. Getting older isn’t necessarily scary— we are all operating on limited time… but part of me knows I’ve wasted so much time already and it’s all only going to continue to slip away. I’ve suffered so much loss and hurt that it feels like it’s been an eternity and a blink of an eye all at once. I don’t want it to end. But I’m also waiting relentlessly for the moment when I’m not constantly in fear of the moment the shoe falls again and something catastrophic occurs.

Oddly enough, this year was… not quite like that. For once, it sort of felt like… living— not in a state of fear, but rather a strange sense of peace. The truth of the matter is sometimes, when nothing is happening, I don’t know what to do with myself and I wonder what’s left for me. Or what’s next, rather. It feels like I’ve survived traumatic episode after traumatic episode, only to not know what to do when the “war” is over. But there’s peace in that, if I’m willing to accept it.

So, what’s next? I really don’t know. I am hoping to grow and learn more. Just because my age is about to start with a “3” doesn’t mean anything too serious, if I really get down to brass tacks. My Memon lived to 93 and she said until the very end she was learning something new every day. I have a niece who turns 3 next week and she’s the brightest thing in my world. She’s a “toddler tornado” but keeps me on my feet and always makes me smile. I want to give her the best life she can, especially considering I have no kids of my own. I will continue to let that inspire me.
I’m going into this year with the same job, same friends, same spirit, but hopefully new direction and new purpose. Go into this year with that purpose, too; to grow, to learn, and to hold close the ones you love. For the future. For auld lang syne.

In honor and loving memory of Jennifer Cooper Gravley (April 24th 1969 - February 10th 2024).

She was a brilliant teacher, steadfast and selfless friend, but most of all… wife to my father, mother to me and my brothers (and eventually sister in law), and grandmother to my beloved niece.

She was the most beautiful person in the world, inside and outside, and her impact has influenced generations of students.

For years, we were a team, taking care of my grandparents, with whom she is now reunited in our maker’s glory. Those days, and many more, I will never forget.

When I was a kid, she would always wear a replica of the Evenstar necklace from Lord of the Rings (as seen in this image). I picked up one a little while back, so I can wear as a token of her memory.

Words cannot express the grief and pain, but I’ll leave you with words of advice she would always impart on me: “Count your blessings.” Make sure to remember the people who love you.
