A little bit of a deep dive into why I've been half-assing any kind of posting on here for the past eight months. ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป

Returning from long term travelling is super weird, but maybe this might be relatable for anyone else who's done the same... by @whoismilly

Because it's not an adventure without a couple of twists and turns, right?

Here's some of the things we got wrong on our year of travel, including some that we wouldn't have changed regardless.

Was choosing this tour a mistake? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Other than the room, the tour was actually great. The guide got us to most of the spots ahead of the crowds, and even whizzed us around in their little boat to get to the best spots to see the manta ray.

The food was delicious, and I loved the activities. For the price we paid, I'd say it WAS absolutely worth it. Having said that, I'd definitely go for a tour with our own room if I did it again, as the shared bunk room was super tiny and crammed with five people and their stuff.

The engine from the boat rattled the bathroom so hard, it was like sleeping in a building site. My sleep on the deck under the stars kinda made up for it though!

Would you go for the cheapest option or spend a bit more?

We spent a year driving around the East and South of Australia in our camper van. These are the spots we think don't get enough love! ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

(Let me know yours in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป)

Australia road trip | backpacking Australia | Australia van life | places to visit in South Australia | places to visit in Queensland

Warrumbungle blew us away, basically. The scenery is gorgeous, there are walks for all abilities and the night sky was just something else. It feels incredibly remote and peaceful (even with all the kangaroos running riot everywhere!). ๐Ÿฆ˜

๐Ÿ“ Warrumbungle, NSW

Justice for Adelaide tbf. We'd heard from a couple of people that it wasn't that exciting or worth visiting, but we ended up with three weeks work there, staying on a city campsite.

I'm so glad we did because Adelaide absolutely charmed me. Okay, you don't NEED weeks on end there, but there's plenty to fill some days with, especially if you explore the surrounding Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula.

After our Sydney to Cairns road trip, we decided to take the inland route back, and barely encountered any travellers under the age of 50 ๐Ÿ˜…

I'm really glad we did though, as we saw a very different side of east Australia. We had a drink in Queensland's oldest pub, saw the Big Rig night show in Roma, and met some absolute classic rural Aussies!

๐Ÿ“ Nindigully, QLD

We ended up in Eungella as I have some Australian family who hosted us there; but if you can get your vehicle up the steep slope, it's really worth your time!

Recommended to us by Aussie friends, Hahndorf was a treat when we felt a little homesick for Europe. German beers, big pretzels and one of our favourite campgrounds in South Australia! ๐Ÿฅจ

Bundaberg Rum Distillery is a great tasting experience, and we grabbed a bottle to take on our travels with us. Swing by Bundaberg Social Club for plant based schnitzel and gorgeous sunsets over the river!

@bundabergrum @bundysocial

Daintree itself is pretty well known, but spending a couple of nights here, less so. We actually spent three nights at @daintreecrocodlus, a back to basics rainforest glamping experience which became a true highlight of our trip. ๐ŸŠ by @whoismilly

Want to see Komodo Dragons in the wild? Here's how ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

We assumed ticking off Komodo National Park would be a 'one day when we're rich' thing, but turns out, it's relatively easy and affordable from Bali! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ

How to do it:

โœˆ๏ธ: Fly from Bali (Denpasar) to Labuan Bajo. It takes around an hour, and prices are usually in the ยฃ40-ยฃ50 region each way.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ: Stay in Labuan Bajo at least the night before. It's a really nice town, and the sunset view from Paradise Bar is spectacular.

๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ: You can book day or overnight tours - we chose the overnight tour so we'd get to see the bats at Kalong Island (and I just love being on a boat). We booked via a tour platform in advance to secure our dates but you can also do it locally.

From there, the local guides will look after you until the boat lands and you fly onward, back to Bali or your next adventure!

Save this for your Bali trip! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ Steal my three day Ubud itinerary for nature, animals, amazing views, private villa pools, wellness, coffee tasting and much more! โ™ฅ๏ธ

๐Ÿ’: @monkey_forest_ubud is home to around 1200 long tailed macaque monkeys. From 100k IDR. Keep personal belongings to a minimum and avoid taking food and drinks, as these guys LOVE stealing a snack.

๐Ÿƒ: Explore the Campuhan Ridge Walk, a 2km mostly easy scenic trail.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ: Head into Ubud town for market shopping, dinner and drinks.

๐Ÿ“ท: Expansive, lush rice terraces are the 'picture' of Bali, and Tegallalang is one of the best-known and most impressive. Walk the pathways and grab the classic swing photo! Basic entry costs 25k IDR

โ›ฉ๏ธ: In the afternoon, visit one of Bali's most sacred water temples, Pura Tirta Empul. Compulsory sarongs and sashes are available for free hire, and people who are menstruating are traditionally not permitted to enter. Entry is 75k IDR.

๐Ÿ’ฆ: There are also lots of lovely waterfalls to explore - Teneguan, Kanto Lampo and Sumampan are top spots.

โ˜•: You can also try local coffee and tea blends at Sukabali Agro Coffee Roasting (we don't even like hot drinks normally but I ended up buying a delicious fruity tea blend!)

๐Ÿ—ป: On our third day we took an afternoon sunset jeep tour to Mount Batur. The weather had other ideas, so we didn't get a sunset, but even seeing the amazing volcanic landscapes was incredible. We booked with a local contact but tours are available to book via the likes of @getyourguide - and you can also book hiking tours for something a bit more adventurous.

๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ: If you prefer something a bit more relaxed, Ubud has tons of opportunities for wellness activities including yoga, massage and spas.

๐ŸŽจ: Alternatively, you could join an art or craft class - popular ones include silver jewellery making, batik artwork and traditional bamboo weaving.

Some of my favourite spots to eat! ๐Ÿ˜‹

The veggie and vegan scene here is great, and loads of options for healthy smoothies, bowls and salads alongside traditional Indonesian cuisine.

We stayed at Villa Aphrodite, a little out of town and only local taxis (so no Grab) are allowed up the road - so best a taken in Ubud by @whoismilly
