Free the Verse! Spoken Word Cabaret

Join us at Intrepid Theatre for an evening of Free the Verse!, a spoken word cabaret. Featuring a diverse lineup of local poets, you’re in for a night of slant rhyme, storytelling, and sweet words.

Tickets start at just $10, and are available IntrepidTheatre.com.

Presented as a part of Intrepid Theatre’s Word/Art mini festival.

This event takes place on the unceded territory of the lekwungen people, now known as the Songhees and Xwsepsum Nation. TransFiXed Productions gives its thanks and respect to be able to produce and work in this territory.

POET FEATURE: Tharani Balachandran

Tharani Balachandran is a poet, lawyer, gossip lover and tea enthusiast who lives on the traditional territory of the Lekwungen peoples in Victoria with her husband, daughter and cat. She is the author of two chapbooks, including “Brown Sugar Skin” released in 2024 from Garden of Neuro publishing, and her work has appeared in numerous publications including On the Seawall, Island Writer and the Racket.

Kath Healing (they/them) is a queer, non-binary and disabled poet and performer living in Victoria, BC. Their work has appeared in literary journals including The Malahat Review, Foglifter and Plenitude, and they perform regularly at literary, queer and community events around Victoria. Shortlisted for the 2026 Pulp Literature Kingfisher Poetry Prize and second overall in the Tongues of Fire Poetry Slam, their work moves through class, gender, disability, family and survival—and is not always solemn about it.

Saturday Dec 13th, 7pm @ CamasBooks: Anti-Singular Dreaming Poetry

Walk into dark forests and search for shimmer. Fatima-Ayan Malika Hirsi and William Ngenda invite you to taste elixir of sacred rage fused with honey. Find what poetry splits open by dreaming between dimensions.

Fatima-Ayan Malika Hirsi is a Black mother who spends time with forests and waters on unceded lands of the T’Sou-ke Nation. Her work strives to instigate action in service to world-building, social change, and collaboration. Her poems live in Obsidian: Literature & Arts in the African Diaspora, MAYDAY, Torch, Elysium Review, Rise Up Review, and other portals. Her first full-length poetry collection, DREAMS FOR EARTH, arrived this fall from Deep Vellum.

A poet of Canadian and Liberian heritage, William Ngenda finds it hard to define himself one way. Since his first public performance on this stage last season, spoken word has become an incredibly valued part of his life. He performed in Imprint at the Phoenix Theatre, and competed in CIPS 2024. He has two chapbooks out and is currently putting together his next project, some of which he will be sharing.

Sliding scale $5-$15, no one turned away for lack of funds. 75% of ticket sales benefit Sudan Solidarity Collective. In the spirit of collective care, this is a mask-mandatory event, and masks will be available onsite. taken in Lekwungen Territory by @whyfayiah
