3 Reasons Why Black Travelers Should Visit Colombia 🇨🇴

❗There are so many Black stories to learn, share and listen to. Even if you are a black history lover like myself, I wouldn't be surprised if you only knew about San Basilio de Palenque or maybe Colombia's VP Francia Márquez, when you think bout Black Colombia.

There are so many stories to connect with and with 2 coasts and a bunch of times and cultures in between any Black person from anywhere in this planet is likely to find something thay makes them feel connected.

❗Nature is very obviously Black People sh*t in this country as it is in many places if you don't grow up in a city! One of my favorite places in the world is located in a rural setting where people catch fish, have things to do en el monte, and wade in rivers as a norm.

❗The biggest reason I think Black travelers should visit Colombia is because we get to meet some cousins across the Diaspora! Being in Colombia, I've met folks from Canada, Brazil, the USA, and many other places who are drawn to the culture of the Pacific Coast they can find in Cali. Those visitors stay or return often because of the connections they make!

Imagine going to cities where you aren't oogled or assumed an immigrant or a tourist because being Black is a normal thing and there are Black folks everywhere and you can make friends if you try!

Count me in!

Bonus - if you run in the right spaces you're pretty likely to find yourself with other Black Folks who Speak Spanish that are extra proud of being Black 🫣 no tea no shade tho 🤣

Why are we curious about the Colombian Pacific?

Curious reads more like obsessed 😂

There is so much to learn while traveling the Black world.

Throughout my travels I have learned that:

❤️ Black people's labor, cultural products, land are over exploited. #freetheland

🖤 Black people are over producers in every way possible, contributing to industries and societies that vastly undervalue us

💚 Because of narratives steeped in eurocentric ideologies we undervalue our own heritage, abilities & talents and the ways the systems are built to work against us. Hasta un sistema de agua, oyó.

🏝️When I went to Timbiquí for the first time and took my rain water bucket baths I realized that a town in abundance of water, is collecting it from rainfall ( across class ). I thought of Flint, MI (USA) and any Black community suffering from Environmental Racism across the globe.

🏝️ When we had to take a 3 hour boat ride to a town on Colombia's mainland (only reachable by boat or by air), I thought of those strange two-fare zones in the Bronx or Brooklyn.

🏝️When we saw the long term chemical effects of mining in the Rio Atrato or Rio Timbiquí I thought of the maroon communities fighting to maintain land sovereignty in the face of US mining in Jamaica's Cockpit Country.

🏝️ When I heard the beautiful music during the madrugadas of December, I wondered how a city like Cali might have had a hatred for this music and it's people even a few decades ago and centuries ago as well. This made me think of the lite feet dancers who were ridiculed and hated on for dancing in the train that are now invited on shows like Ellen and featured on billboards thought NYC!

It is all interconnected, we just have to be curious and look around.

Can't wait to look around with you folks when we meet wherever we meet in the world. For now we'll be looking out for ya in Colombia :) taken in Río Timbiquí by @whyze.ny

🌴 oh don't mind us, just spending the day by the river with our cuzzos at @alborada_de_timbiqui

Our tardeo on the Timbiquí River is a replica of the kind of laid back enjoyment most people do after big festivities, heading up the river with friends or family, cooking a big sancocho, and chilling by the water.

Our local hosts at Alborada have found really exciting ways to turn their everyday experiences into an opportunity for visitors to see what it's like to live in their town.

On our 1/2 day trip
🚣🏾 we head out onto the water,
🍲cook together with plants from Azotea (natural condimental plants)
📜enjoy some stories and reflections from their elders and 🎣have a fun time on the river!

if you're ready for a tardeo with us, join an info session - this Wednesday or next! Comment below if you'd like the link! taken in Río Timbiquí by @whyze.ny

⛪ Santa Barbara Patron Saint Day

the reason 100,000's of people come out to Cali, Colombia every August is for the games Petronio Alvarez Music Festival @petronioco.

A HUGE festival with food, music, lectures, and partying until you can't take it anymore.

What we lose from the context is that the music cultures (plural!) from the Pacific are varied in religious (non-secular) and party (secular) uses.

With visitors from all around the world, if you don't speak Spanish, are unfamiliar with Catholicism, or unfamiliar with the religious peculiarities of each region, it's easy to miss these nuances.

What I love about doing these trips to Timbiquí for their Patron Saint Day is seeing the culture of ONE region with new detail.

Immersed in the religious traditions of the music cultures that give us songs like "Maria no me llevo" (Mary didn't take me", "Que será María que iba en el mar" (Would that be Mary passing in the sea), we get to see and ask questions about the Catholic traditions that are just one motor of the music culture.

Then at the local concerts we get the non-secular and secular music on stage for the party!

Not everyone is a practicing Catholic at these celebrations, but the celebrations do provide each community with a way to connect everyone young and old to the music with NO STAGE, NO COSTUMES, NO TIME LIMITS, NO COMPETITION.

Would you like to see the culture up close with us this December?

p.s. My Santa Barbara song choice is no accident. Partially to draw attention, partially to say something about analyzing Afro-Diasporic religion and spirituality.

I had many a debate with @rgshalom during the Santa Barbara celebration about syncretism. He rightly pointed out that in other places in the world, mainly cuba December 4th is also a day to celebrate Shango an Orisha from the Ifa tradition, and asked whether the celebration was also for Shango.

My rebuttle was, Dec 4 also celebrates Oya Yansa on Brazil. Santa Barbara is not syncretized with just ONE spiritual concept or another, and we need a lot more pop-intellectual studies on different African spiritual systems, and how to recognize them in the diaspora. taken in Santa Barbara de Timbiqui Cauca by @whyze.ny

I hope a Black Sabbatical can do for you what it did for me

enjoyment 🤝 learning

When I talk about taking black sabbaticals, it is not about escapism we normally associate with travel.

I pose to you the idea that you can step out of a euro-centric world and world view, to commune with (other) black people, and understand how different black communities live and experience their reality.

Our experiences are different but converge along the lines of culture, our experience of European domination, and routine/systematic underdevelopment.

I'm inviting you to sing your heart out, shake a tail feather, and learn a thing or two from some peers and elders on a teeny-tiny town nestled in the Pacific Coast of Colombia.

Nov 30 - Dec 7, 2025

If that kind of experience is for you, I would love to see you in December! Comment below if you'd like the link to learn more 💥 by @whyze.ny

🇯🇲 When my mom as a Jamaican went to the Pacific (Chocó) with me for the first time she felt right at home.

Our Black Sabbatical trips to Timbiquí hopes to make every traveler feel at home in a new place.

We be all up in di ppl dem place, and happily invited to do so too!

Our trip is a wonderful opportunity to learn about a culture we often SEE ON STAGE, in one of its home territories during a huge patron saint holiday is a beautiful experience, and I love bringing folks along for the ride!

We're hosting our first info session tonight (Thursday)! Can't wait to talk to folks about why Timbiquí should be on their travel bucket lists!

Leave a comment below or do me if you want the link!

🇨🇴🇯🇲 Also the music felt timely, did you know how much ragga (reggae dancehall inspired music) is popular in Colombia? Buenaventura seems to be home base for production, but My Colombia. Lmk if there is another city that does it better! by @whyze.ny
