I went out today to look for a snowy owl, but my efforts were rewarded with a wonderful encounter with nine short-eared owls perched in the same tree. The scene resembled a family reunion.

In my experience, short-eared owls are one of the friendliest owl species.

My love for wildlife began long before I ever picked up a camera. Growing up, I spent countless hours watching birds and observing the incredible world of nature around me. I was fascinated by their beauty, their behavior, and the quiet moments that most people might overlook.

For me, wildlife photography isn’t simply about taking a photograph. It’s about connecting with nature, observing the world around me, learning, and appreciating the incredible lives that share this world with us. Every time I am outdoors with my camera, I feel that same sense of wonder I had as a child watching birds.

I can’t get enough of these burrowing owl chicks! They’ve just started learning how to hunt, and now they’re chasing after anything that moves. I even saw one go after a gopher that was twice its size! Watching them run down the road after tiny bugs is absolutely hilarious, they’re so determined and full of personality.

It has been wonderful to watch these little burrowing owls grow from tiny fluff balls into young adults, learning to hunt on their own. Losing their youngest sibling, who was my favourite, was heartbreaking.

But seeing the others become independent—hunting, playing, and exploring around the burrow has brought me so much joy. I hope they all make their first migration south safely and return next spring.

It was a dream of mine to see a Northern Cardinal. While in Toronto, I decided to venture out in the extreme heat in search of one. After searching for more than an hour, this beautiful guy finally showed himself and was singing his heart out. The lighting conditions weren’t ideal, but I was so happy and grateful to finally see one. It was truly a memorable moment.

It was hilarious watching this owl family. Mom kept a close eye on her chicks and never let them stay outside for long. Whenever she made a certain call, they would all head back into the burrow. The tiniest chick, whom I named Chicken Nuggets, was the naughty one and, I think, Mom’s favourite. He loved playing outside and often didn’t listen to her. I was lucky enough to observe their adorable antics.
