Honouring bedtime has been one of the hardest and least trendy rhythms to hold in our home.As children get older, summer comes and evenings stretch out. They want to do more. Stay up later. Be part of everything.And when you are parenting a child with a behavioural sleep disorder, rhythm is not a nice idea. It is survival.With my oldest, we had a steady bedtime rhythm.With my youngest, it has had to look completely different. That has been the reality.For four and a half years, sleep did not feel achievable for her. It was a fight to fall asleep, to stay asleep, night after night after night.And believe us when we say, we tried everything.It was not just the evenings.There were long bouts of insomnia that would have us awake and up at 1am, 2am for hours with no end in sight.Things reached a breaking point for me around August last year.I had to pull back on everything happening in the evenings after school and start saying no. I was not popular with my eldest that’s for sure but.. Evenings needed to come home.Dinner. Winding down. Baths. Bed.The same rhythm, night after night.I do not claim that rhythm alone fixed everything.But I do know it helped support her to begin sleeping more regularly and with better quality.And since then, our whole home has shifted.We have sleep now.And I feel like a new person.If that is how my nervous system feels, I can only imagine what it has done for hers.Sleep matters.Rhythm matters.And sometimes protecting the evening is the most loving thing you can do. by @wild_mountain_child
