Bit of a full circle moment for me. I grew up as a child coming to the @hornimanmuseumgardens and being infatuated every time with the natural history gallery and transparent beehive (if you know you know!)

Fast forward 15 years and I got to host my own @wildends Birdwatching Tours of the Horniman nature trail for their 125th Birthday🐦🌳 30 degrees and midday meant that it was quiet in the woods but using our ears, the ID guides and binoculars, we managed to see juvenile nuthatches, blue tit, goldcrest, robin, wood pigeon and a baby crow. We also just enjoyed the peace and greenery.

A range of ages came but it was my first time getting to show the kids dem about the birds and nature living around us. Their keenness was inspiring, and although I wish I had a nature role model growing up, I can hopefully be one to them now 🫡💚

An albino squirrel I came across by chance in Croydon, South London. Passing by on the way back from work, I genuinely thought it was someone’s pet ferret 😂 but upon further inspection, I found it to be a white, albino squirrel!! There are an estimated 50 individuals in the country, based on a 1 in 100,000 chance of albinism, once again highlighting the overlooked beauty of urban wildlife 💚

Slow worms - our very own legless lizards 🦎 🪱 🐍

See how diverse they are, coming in so many shapes, sizes and colours ✊🏽

They are also completely harmless so please rewild your gardens/local green spaces and help our struggling reptiles, pollinators, insects, hedgehogs and birds 💚🫡

Where in London to see them: Hackney marshes, WWT Barnes, Lesnes Abbey (Bexley), Wormwood scrubs, Islington and St Pancreas Cemetery, your garden📍

Join the UK’s largest citizen science
wildlife survey!! @rspb

This weekend, spend one hour counting the highest number of each bird species landing in your garden, balcony, or local park/nature space to help monitor population trends 📊 🐦

The house sparrow wins first place every year, except their numbers have dropped 60% since the first watch in 1979 😔

Song thrush sightings have also dropped by over 83% since the first watch 🎶💔

This citizen science project helps identify species in decline and directs conservation efforts to those who need it the most.

Upload your results to the RSPB website and know that you’ve helped bird conservation efforts 💚

Moments from Episode 6 of Earth Flicks & Chill (our 1st birthday! 🎉), where we welcomed London’s wildlife to @xandwhyspace People’s Mission Hall! 🦊🐦‍⬛🐛🦉🐝

We spent the evening with urban ecologists @akisphere , @ianphillipswildlife , and @jamalkabir_wildlife , learning about their work to protect the creatures we share our cities with, and the biggest conservation challenges they face. My favourite moment of the night was Akash’s story about spotting an albino squirrel on the streets of Croydon, of all places! 🐿️ What’s your favourite London wildlife encounter?

To learn more about urban wildlife, follow Akash, Ian, and Jamal, and keep an eye on @renatureldn for their brilliant work and volunteer opportunities.

Huge thanks to our new sponsor @planetprotectioninsurance , and to everyone who’s been part of the Earth Flicks community this past year! 💚

Wild Ends: Snakes in London 🐍 🐍🐍

The UK is home to three native snake species. The grass snake is the most common, it’s harmless and loves to swim 🏊 The adder is the only venomous one we have, but rarely bites and is easily treatable. Then there’s the elusive smooth snake, the rarest of the three, found mainly on southern heathlands. All are protected and play an important role in the ecosystem— even in unexpected places like urban London 🌆

Did you know we had snakes in London?

Wild Endz | Ep2: Turtles 🐢

Terrapins, a semi-aquatic family of turtles, were actually native in the U.K ~7000 years ago but became extinct due to climatic changes 🥶 In the last hundred years they’ve returned, not by their own accord but as pets 🐢 This was significant in the 1990s due to the TV show ‘Teenage mutant ninja turtles’, which encouraged a wave of imports 📺 Long story short, they’re born the size of a 50p coin and grow to a large dinner plate, hence why so many people were unable to care for them after that, resulting in a wave of releases into local ponds etc.

They are currently classed as invasive by law ❌ and it’s illegal to release them into the wild 👮‍♀️ due to fear of them harming the local wildlife, but without any real substantial evidence of it. Plus, they can’t even really breed here because they need hot temperatures to incubate the eggs! Personally id rather them be free in lakes and ponds than be stuck in a tank or in someone’s tiny garden. 3 dem! 🔑

I think monitor them and deal with them on a case by case basis if they cause any big problems (such as trying to annihilate a local duck population, which is very unlikely)

Do you think these lot deserve their ‘invasive’ status?⚠️

Wild Endz | Ep1: Sparrows in Peckham 🐦🚨
House sparrows, our secret neighbours, are fascinating little birds that are highly social, often hanging out in large groups!

Despite still being abundant here, their populations have actually declined by 70% since 1977 😓 For the Urban groups, possible reasons include reduced food availability 🪰 🫐 loss of favoured nesting and foraging sites (due to urban landscape changes🏡) and increased levels of pollution ☢️💡

Connecting with wildlife can further help us to understand their ecology and how our ways of living affect them. So, when you’re next walking past a hedgerow, listen out! 🔊

Seeing as they’re technically living in our houses, should we start charging them rent?

Go and see where beavers are living in London!! Guided walks are with the Ealing wildlife group in Greenford📍Beavers 🦫 my favourite ecosystem engineers ♻️ do much more than build dams and create pools I KNOWW but I was time-limited for the video 🙏🏽😮‍💨

Some highlights include mitigating flooding 🔱coppicing dominant trees 🌳 which increase biodiversity 💚 and being a cultural symbol and inspiration for a green future where we have a healthy coexistence with wild animals ✨🫶🏽🌎

Do you think we can coexist with FULLY wild beavers in London?
