In the heart of the concrete jungle…

Last week me and @akisphere led a @columbia_eu hike society walk in Tottenham marshes- a beautiful oasis of wildlife just 5 minutes walk from Tottenham Hale station.

Funnily, I’ve walked past this place almost everyday on my way to work and didn’t realise the magic behind the gates. From butterflies, to fruits, to herons flying over your head, this place is top of the game for urban wildlife.

Sharing these experiences with the community slaps even more. There’s something special about sharing the joys of the natural world with others 🤝🏾💓 so thank you to everyone who came along and we really hope you enjoyed the hike xxx

London wildlife appreciation post 🌆❤️‍🔥💚
There’s surprisingly a lot more than you’d think in this urban jungle, we’ve just been programmed into disregarding it all as background noise.

We must protect our wild neighbours, who will in turn keep us connected to the natural world, something we must never lose if we want to remain compassionate human beings. The first step to this is simply acknowledging them and sharing our experiences ✨ 🌍

1. Red fox, Sydenham
2. Juvenile Grey heron, Kensington
3. Magpie, Peckham
4. Canada Goose and a Coot, Camberwell
5. Red fox, Sydenham
6. Kestrel, Dulwich
7. Eurasian Nuthatch, Dulwich
8. Red fox, Sydenham
9. Carrion crow, Hyde park

Go and see where beavers are living in London!! Guided walks are with the Ealing wildlife group in Greenford📍Beavers 🦫 my favourite ecosystem engineers ♻️ do much more than build dams and create pools I KNOWW but I was time-limited for the video 🙏🏽😮‍💨

Some highlights include mitigating flooding 🔱coppicing dominant trees 🌳 which increase biodiversity 💚 and being a cultural symbol and inspiration for a green future where we have a healthy coexistence with wild animals ✨🫶🏽🌎

Do you think we can coexist with FULLY wild beavers in London?

Grow your own wildflowers today🪻🦋🐝🪲

Some facts:

- This can also simply be letting your grass lawn grow as wildflowers will arise if they get a chance

- How? https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/actions/how-grow-wild-patch-or-mini-meadow

- Wildflowers should be predominantly native as these provide the most benefit to our wildlife

- Other, overlooked pollinators include hoverflies, moths, beetles, wasps and even mosquitoes

- 85% of the agricultural land in the UK is used for livestock but it only provides 32% of our calories. Only 15% of it is used to grow crops for direct human consumption (the most inefficient system we’ve created and it’s killing the planet 🫶🏽)

Little meowl in the ends tonight 🦉

We forget there’s a whole new batch of creatures out there when the sun goes down, and I’m here 4 it - bats, owls, hedgehogs, badgers. That team might beat any diurnal one we have 👀

Bit of a full circle moment for me. I grew up as a child coming to the @hornimanmuseumgardens and being infatuated every time with the natural history gallery and transparent beehive (if you know you know!)

Fast forward 15 years and I got to host my own @wildends Birdwatching Tours of the Horniman nature trail for their 125th Birthday🐦🌳 30 degrees and midday meant that it was quiet in the woods but using our ears, the ID guides and binoculars, we managed to see juvenile nuthatches, blue tit, goldcrest, robin, wood pigeon and a baby crow. We also just enjoyed the peace and greenery.

A range of ages came but it was my first time getting to show the kids dem about the birds and nature living around us. Their keenness was inspiring, and although I wish I had a nature role model growing up, I can hopefully be one to them now 🫡💚

Don’t miss the wild cherries this year 🍒 Go and become acquainted with your local tree and hope it’s a sweet one 😅

Yes, I still ate the one I dropped. Yes I look tired, this was right after a dawn bird survey but that meant this was also breakfast and a fulfilling one it was 🌞

All cherry trees are edible, some are sweet/sour but just make sure you don’t eat the pips as they are poisonous.

Happy foraging 🤜🏽💚🤛🏽

Have you ever felt like the version of engaging with nature on screens or social media wasn’t for you?

If your answer is yes then I think that you’ll like this special episode of How To Make Climate Change Sexy with Sony Pictures on Earth Day.

I was joined by Emily and Lucy from @softgirlswhohike and @akisphere to explore alternative ways to engage with the natural world. From Soft Girls Who Hike’s rejection of the competitive culture of outdoor spaces, swapping out strava times for mindful walking, folklore and local history to Akash who brings the same accessibility to urban ecology, birdwatching on his commute and showing people the urban neighbours they didn’t know existed.

In this episode, we talk about how everyone’s relationship to nature can look different and the practical first steps you can take, whether that’s a colour walk on your lunch break or keeping binoculars in your bag and most importantly why there’s no single “right” way to connect, just take your first steps!

Special thanks to Sony Pictures Entertainment for hosting this Earth Day live recording. How to Make Climate Change Sexy is a podcast that dives into conversations with guests who are using culture and innovation to tackle the climate crisis.
