Happy June! As we close out our May birthday month, we’re feeling incredibly grateful reflecting on how far Wilde Tracks has come since our founding in 2023! 🦏🧡✨

🌍 From 2023 → May 2026, these numbers represent so much more than statistics- they represent rescued wildlife, conservation impact, unforgettable missions, and a global community coming together for wildlife. From veterinarians and students to people working everyday office jobs, this mission has always been powered by ordinary people doing extraordinary things together.

🐾 To our amazing participants, team, partners, sponsors, and the entire Wilde Tracks’ Pack: thank you. We’re so proud of how far we’ve come in just three years, and trust us- we’re only getting started. ⁨ ⁨ ⁨ لأول مرة أشوف من الداخل وبشكل عملي علم، وطب، وأخلاقيات، وقرارات محسوبة تقف خلف لحظة قد تبدو لنا في الصورة بسيطة جدًا

أول يوم ميداني لي بدأ مع أسرع حيوان بري على الأرض: الشيتا.

لكن اللي تعلمته بسرعة هو أن الـconservation مو دائمًا معناه “نترك الطبيعة وشأنها”.

في المحميات المُدارة، أحيانًا التدخل البشري المدروس يكون جزءًا من حماية الحيوان نفسه للفحص، العلاج، أخذ العينات، المتابعة الصحية، أو أحيانًا للنقل بين المحميات كجزء من إدارة الجماعات والحفاظ على التنوع الجيني.

وهذا بالضبط ليش يتم أحيانًا chemical immobilisation للحيوانات البرية.

تحت إشراف الطبيب البيطري، يتم تخدير الحيوان لفترة قصيرة حتى يمكن فحصه وعلاجه بأقل قدر ممكن من التوتر و الضغط والمخاطر على الحيوان.

الفحص الصحي قبل أي نقل أو إعادة إطلاق مهم أيضًا؛ لأن نقل حيوان لا يعني فقط نقل فرد واحد، بل قد يعني نقل أمراض أو طفيليات إلى جماعة أو نظام بيئي آخر⁩⁩⁩ by @wildetracks

Happy World Gorilla Day to the forest’s unofficial gardeners, seed spreaders, and ecosystem caretakers. 🦍🌍🌿

Gorilla conservation has taught us that humans share roughly 98% of DNA with gorillas. This fact makes gorillas a pretty good reminder of something conservation has been telling us for years- forest health, wildlife health, and human health are all connected.

That’s what we love about conservation- the more you look, the more you realise nothing exists on its own. You impact one, you affect the other.

And yes, you can come see it for yourself.

Join us for Rhino Week as we get closer to the teams doing the work to save these chubby unicorns! 🦄🦏✨

The data is clear, and the reality on the ground demands action. Right now, proactive horn trimming is one of the most effective tools conservation teams have to help keep these gentle giants safe before a crisis even starts.

But behind that work are vast teams of veterinary professionals, conservationists, pilots, rangers, and local experts putting in the hours- from tracking rhinos across the bush to safely carrying out the procedures that can give them a better chance of making it home. 🌍🐾🌿

This is what conservation looks like on the ground.

🦏 Happy World Rhino Day 2026, from all of us at Wilde Tracks.

For those with a keen eye, you may have spotted that these rhinos are made up of a collage of photographs from some of the horn-trimming missions we’ve supported. In just a few short years, we’re incredibly proud to have helped protect more than 60 rhinos. And this is only the beginning. 🤍

To those who support our posts, those who ask questions, and yes, even those who come to disagree in the comments… thank you. Every conversation brings more attention to a species that desperately needs it.

So, to answer a few questions upfront:

Yes, we love rhinos.
Yes, we know they need their horns.
Yes, we wish horn trimming wasn’t necessary.
And yes, we believe the only thing that truly needs a rhino horn is a rhino.

But the reality is devastating. Poachers are killing rhinos for their horns, despite horn being made primarily of keratin, the same protein found in our hair and fingernails. By removing the majority of the horn, a rhino becomes less attractive as a target to poachers. It doesn’t remove the risk completely, but it can significantly reduce it.

Horn trimming is not something undertaken lightly. Rhinos are not randomly selected. These interventions are carried out with the appropriate government permits, by qualified veterinarians and alongside reserve management and conservation teams. It is one tool within a much wider strategy to protect rhinos from poaching.

Importantly, it is reversible. The horn grows back. We wish none of this were necessary. We wish rhinos could simply exist with their horns, without those horns putting their lives at risk. Until that day comes, we will continue supporting the experts, following the science and funding the work needed to keep them safe.

And to every guest who has joined one of our missions: thank you. Your participation helps fund this work. We do not use conservation as a method of tourism. We use tourism as a method of funding conservation.

And we’ll keep doing it until the rhinos don’t need us anymore.

World Rhino Day is coming up, but we’re making it Rhino Week! 🦏❤️✨

A whole week to look beyond the headlines and into the hard data, real threats, and conservation work behind saving a species.

Many people ask if the veterinary procedure of trimming rhinos’ horns (dehorning) really works. The peer-reviewed answer is a resounding yes.

🔬A massive 7-year study published in the journal Science in 2025 evaluated 11 major wildlife reserves, and found that horn trimming gives rhinos an incredible shield against poaching. By trimming a rhino’s horn, an individual rhino’s long-term, 10-year chance of survival jumps from a devastating 25% all the way up to 94%.

🌍 The horn is just keratin (like our fingernails) and it safely grows back- but this simple, preventative veterinary procedure is giving them a chance at a long and peaceful life!

We are absolutely heartbroken to hear of the passing of Jaco Muller.

Jaco was doing something truly extraordinary through the @rhinomommaproject. His dedication to protecting rhinos and creating a safer future for them was remarkable, and his loss will be felt so deeply by everyone who knew him and across the wider conservation community.

More than anything, Jaco was a genuinely kind and wholesome person. Kasey and I had the privilege of staying with Jaco and his family, who welcomed us with the most incredible warmth and hospitality. We were lucky enough to spend time getting to know him not only as a passionate conservationist, but as a person, and we will always be grateful for that.

Some of our guests also had the opportunity to see firsthand the amazing work at the Rhino Momma Project and support dehorning procedures of their rhino population. We are all deeply saddened and, on behalf of our guests who joined this mission and everyone at Wilde Tracks, we send our love and deepest condolences to Jaco’s family, friends, and the entire Rhino Momma Project team.

We hope the conservation community will come together to support them and the incredible work Jaco cared so deeply about. May everything he was building continue, and may his passion, kindness, and dedication live on through every rhino protected in his name.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this unimaginably difficult time.

On this South African conservation mission, you’ll not only get a behind the scenes look at game capture, immobilisation, and relocation- but most importantly, you’ll learn why these techniques are necessary to help protect wildlife.

🌿 You’ll work alongside experienced conservation professionals, learn with wildlife vets, assist with critical wildlife operations as they happen, and discover what it really takes to safely manage and protect wild animals.

🦁 WildeRelocation is open to anyone 18+ and all ability levels are welcome! Whether you’re already working in wildlife management or simply have a serious passion for wildlife, this mission is for you.
