“How do you know of love?”

As a child, I wasn’t surrounded with love. My parents had their own personal lives going on, they forgot that there was a person they both needed to care and provide for.

Neglect and abandonment are very familiar to me growing up. So much so that as an adult, I used these familiar actions as a stress/trauma response. (Flight)

I know of love because I was so used to the lack of it, that every inch of my body ached for it, craved for it. I looked in every and all places, but never finding it.

As I started to tune into my body, listening to the very organ that pumps life thru me , I started realizing, that “hey, if I have a heart and capable of loving other humans, maybe I’m capable of giving myself love.”

Not the romanticized love. Not the love for bubble baths and face masks. The kind of love that was raw. The kind of love that called me out of my bullshit. The kind of love that showed me I’m sabotaging myself. The love that saw my shadow, and told me “i still accept these parts of you.”

That is the love I know. No fear of saying it as it is. No fear of calling out mistakes. No fear of making mistakes.

That is how I know of Love

**connect to your source, plug into your heart by placing your hand on top of your chest, close your eyes and feel your heart beat with the highest frequency that is LOVE**

You are allowed to love you 🪞

Whenever I hear tourists say they “love the Philippines” because of its warm people, I can’t help but wonder if they ever think about uplifting those same people in tangible ways.

Do they choose to support local families, community-run spaces, and Filipino-owned businesses? Or is “loving the Philippines” sometimes reduced to enjoying the aesthetic and the hospitality while most of the profit still flows elsewhere?

The warmth people praise doesn’t exist separately from the realities Filipinos navigate daily. If we truly appreciate a place and its people, that appreciation should extend beyond consumption into reciprocity and support.

Buy from sari-sari stores and karenderias, buy from the kids and elders selling on the street. Support Filipino owned businesses.

As a traveler in my own country, these are some of the things I believe can help uplift Filipino communities.

Tourism has the power to do more than create beautiful memories, it can create opportunities, support livelihoods and strengthen local economies. But only if we travel with intention.

Let me hear your thoughts, what are ways you think we can make tourism more ethical and beneficial for local communities?

Lalahon / Lalaon is associated with Negros Island, in the Visayas. A deity who embodies the dual nature of the Earth, able to nurture life (good harvest, abundance and fertile soil) or unleash destructive forces like volcanic eruption, wildfires and earthquakes.

fun favt: my mom’s hometown is in Talisay, Negros Occidental ❤️‍🔥

We’re not blood related, but she always treated me as her own.. Remembering how I was always referred to as her “alaga” whenever she brings me with her to work… I’m grateful, that despite what wasn’t provided, God gave me my Ate Belay. Mahal kita ate @belaylontok
