Amphibians are disappearing across North America.

But what if an invasive forest plant is part of the problem?

Garlic mustard releases allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) - a compound strong enough to be used as a biochemical pesticide. It disrupts soil fungi and may wash into breeding ponds where frogs and toads develop.

Studies show AITC can cause malformations and mortality in frog embryos.

My latest article explores the hypothesis that garlic mustard may be contributing to amphibian decline in the Northeast.

Read about it here:

VOLUNTEER CALL - Here are some shots from our work session today at Veteran Nature Study Area. If you are interested in volunteering, follow @li_habitathelpers or message Melissa at melissa@lihabitathelpers.com
We have winter saw work coming up, and we could use some help removing invasive shrubs and vines this winter.
We also need to remove some Chinese Bush clover from the prairie.
The woodland in East Northport is confirmed Coastal Oak Laurel woodland, state-listed as S1 (rarest or most imperiled), with a risk of becoming extinct within the state. This community is quite rare - with only a handful of forests left. Come be a part of saving something great. by @wildfloweringdream

@havengallery is run by a wonderful curator and human being who recently gathered amazing floral designers from around the island though @immortal.blossoms to showcase stunning arrangements. Congrats to all involved. Proceeds will go to a local non-profit. Still time to vote so get to Northport today and experience this amazing event to vote on your favorite display. by @wildfloweringdream

Veterans Nature Study Area has been a labor of love for me and the amazing volunteers who call this park home. It’s quite a special park and we welcome anyone who would like to come and be involved in the revitalization of these woodlands.

Monarch wings are made up of tiny feathers carrying them all the way from Long Island to Mexico. Neat to be able to see them on my 100mm lens. This one was a bit tattered. Really would love to increase my magnification to see all the wonders.

i recently took my love of plants to the next level - attending a Long Island Botanical Society event. I met some of the most impressive botanists on the island. I highly recommend getting involved - if, like me, you love learning about Long Island plants.

They are currently selling a book that combines historic accounts and decades of hands-on surveying to make one of the most comprehensive lists of Native plants on the island.

Blooms from late September of last year. I think it’s an aster and not a fleabane but I haven’t gotten to that level of distinction yet. Leaves are more aster than fleabane. Why are there so many species 😅 this one has rhizomes and a flurry of tiny blooms to help late season pollinators store up for winter.

Cheerful fall blooms nonetheless. Makes me optimistic that although it’s September the show isn’t quite over yet. I’m already mourning the slow colonization of weeds this time of year when the garden starts to breath and I can actually see the distinction between plants as some plants start to fade. Premature acorns start littering the ground and walnut trees look heavy and pregnant with green tennis balls - just waiting to make the sidewalks a mess and the squirrels frantic. 🍃🍂🍁 by @wildfloweringdream
