behind the scenes of the dill blossom fireworks installation✨

the process:

we used a long length of 14-gauge wire to create a stable, horizontal base for the fireworks structure. we then [tightly] wrapped shorter strips of wire directly onto the main length using glue dots and pure muscle strength, to prevent the flower heads from sliding. the wire frame structure itself was suspended from the ceiling beams using fishing line at three points of contact.

I wanted to create a ~sparklyshimmery~ feel to the design, but after several attempts at a disco ball rave backdrop I decided the dill umbels were impactful on their own 💅

lastly, we pressed the wires through the stems of dill flower heads, occasionally sealing with floral adhesive. each dill stem used was harvested from our garden<3

It’s an honor and a privilege to have taken part in this season’s @florists_review “Best in Blooms” competition alongside such phenomenal, artistic designers in the industry. I cried and dang near rolled off the couch when I received the news.

It was a treat to work with these juicyyy American-grown flowers and foliage. I can’t thank the hardworking farmers enough for this bountiful harvest, and @florists_review @americangrownflowers for the opportunity.

My intention for this tablescape design was to capture the warm, playful, delicious summer energy on Long Island, and to evoke feelings of love and community. I was invigorated by the colorful, unique assortment of florals and foliage that our generous flower farmers sent us. I wanted this tablescape to feel joyful. A place where everyone who sat down felt a sense of belonging. A design that invites guests to come as they are, and to revel their own funky, eclectic radiance.

The Crossing — a reflection on grief, devotion, and how we stay connected to lost loved ones beyond the veil. Thank you to those who reached out on the previous post.

This floral installation was pieced together using second-hand items gathered from around the island, to create a table setting that felt warm and lived in.

The two long glass flower vessels were found at a neighbor’s yard sale, the wooden antique table from Marketplace, and the two floral mugs from Savers. The stretch of drapery may or may not have been taken from a venue’s day-old wedding ceremony setup…And the tablescape itself was filled with local Queen Anne’s lace stems from @saltairfarm

As we reached the sunniest time of day on the creek, the dragonflies flitted around us and the flowers, darting in and out of the light. Their presence made the moment feel even more sacred.

Three family members have passed since the end of May. Some days it feels like grief is dragging me by the ankles. Other days I sit with the bittersweet truth, that this great sadness is the price we pay for loving our people with our whole chest.

This installation, The Crossing, is a reflection of how we stay connected to our loved ones after they’ve left this realm.

Is it talking to an empty passenger seat on a late night drive home? Is it marking their name in ink on our body? Is it wearing their old jewelry like talisman? Is it cooking their hand-scribbled recipe, and adding an extra place setting at the table? Is it visiting this one particular park bench, and you can’t quite put your finger on it, but when you’re near the bench, you feel… something?

Perhaps these small acts of devotion are a bridge to another world, whether we see it with our mere mortal eyes or not. When we reach out to our loved ones, I’d like to think they’re reaching back to us.

The Crossing is a piece that says, “I love you, and I wish I could stay. But I’ll see you again soon.”

The last slide is a poem by Wendell Berry that I keep coming back to.

oooh we love a theme. especially when it involves a peachy-pink citrus color palette like our recent Aperol Spritz soirée with @worthashotevents 🍊

for these designs, we paired local, seasonal flowers like snapdragons, zinnias, dahlias, phlox, cosmos, lilies, and forsythia foliage, with traditional bangers like the Free Spirit rose and Tequila Sunrise pompons. gallivanting across the island to source locally-grown gems for our arrangements is a top priority, not just because of the ecological reasons. but also because I swear these stems are infused with a certain type of unparalleled love and care that feel like home.

there’s always magic in the leftover stems. featuring an ikebana-inspired pin frog bowl of abelia, the queen, and zinnias from @saltairfarm + phlox and snapdragons from the garden. each flower feels extra precious this time of year. I mean come onnn with the ruffly petals of the ballerina zinnias 🫠🥲
