POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Last week I got the opportunity to spend the day with Andrea from @hdffa , Alice from @foffinthefield and Justin from Big Summit Beef at the Oregon State Capitol to advocate on behalf of Central Oregon farmers and ranchers.

We attended the Senate Natural Resources Committee meeting (more on that below) and met with legislators to discuss issues facing our regions producers. We spoke about the importance of additional funding for Double Up Food Bucks and the Oregon Agricultural Heritage Program. Additionally, we dove deeper into our areas meat processing capacity and the need for funding more infrastructure and staff for processing facilities, as well as future funding for efficient infrastructure and region-specific water basin programs. We also did a field trip out to @castironfarm to learn about Christine and her advocacy efforts for raw milk producers in Oregon, and to snuggle some baby animals!

Now back to that Senate committee meeting. The topic of discussion was a long awaited, and contentious, decision on the extension of the Willamette Valley Seed Protection District. HB4059-A would keep the current protections and regulations on canola (500 total acres) in place until 2028 and would prevent them from sunsetting. Why is that important? Well, the Willamette Valley (and the ā€œgreen corridorā€ going north to BC, Canada) is one of the last places in the world where specialty brassica seed can be grown. The seed producers in the valley grow 90% of the world’s brassica seed. So what’s the issue with Canola specifically? Canola is a brassica and it’s highly able to cross pollinate with other brassicas and it’s also a a GMO crop. In other words, once it’s introduced to the valley it will cross with those seeds and we will never have clean brassica genetics again. Unfortunately, the opposition has made an issue of some language in the bill so despite passing out of committee there needs to be a concurrence vote in the house by Friday. WITHOUT THIS VOTE THE SUNSET WILL EXPIRE AND THERE WILL BE NO PROTECTIONS AT ALL!

Please consider sending a comment of support for the extension using the link in my stories. FOFF makes it really easy to get involved! by @wildgrownfarm

This is a perfect example of a system on our farm that we would love to change in the future, but that we have to roll with right now. For those who aren’t familiar with how irrigation water works where we live- water is diverted from the Deschutes River though a series of canals to an endpoint. Some sections of our canal are piped but unfortunately for us this section comes out of a pipe on a neighbors property into an open ditch that then runs under the road and to our farm. As you can imagine, we lose a lot of water that soaks into the soil and is evaporated along the way. Essentially, we’re watering our neighbors pasture with our irrigation water :( In the near future, we’ll be working to secure funding to be able to finish the piping so that it comes directly to us. In the meantime though, we need to maintain this section and one of the easiest ways for us to clear it of vegetation is through burning and digging out any areas that need to be. Water is tentatively scheduled to come on in the next couple weeks so it feels super good to have this one checked off the list.

Monday morning meeting and the shareholders are happy!

But seriously, buy local and support businesses who prioritize the needs of their animals and customers over corporate interests. Our real shareholders are the animals that call this farm home and the customers who nourish their families with our products. We’re proud of that!

We now offer online orders with weekly pick up times and we’re taking deposits for Thanksgiving turkeys!

The last four years have honestly been a whirlwind for our family- a big move across the state, starting two farm businesses, building our own house, adding a baby and a puppy to our crew. It’s been a whole lot of change but one tradition we’ve managed to keep in tact is our annual trip to @mtvieworchards in Parkdale. We’ve been coming every year since I was pregnant with my daughter, who is now almost 9. It’s been fun to watch the success and growth of their farm over the years and get to soak in the absolute abundance of their orchard.

We visited recently and stocked up on some apples and pears, varieties of which most folks have never heard of or had the opportunity to taste. We’ll eat a lot of this fresh and preserve some by making sauce and pie filling. Shockingly, this likely enough to get our family through until @centraloregonfyp in November. We eat a lot of apples!

Which is why this spring we planted 60 fruit trees on our farm, some apples, pears, plums, and peaches. It will be several years before we get a solid crop of our own, and even then growing fruit on the High Desert inevitably means years with bumper crops and others with absolutely nothing. Either way, we’ll continue our tradition of adventuring up to Mt. Hood to support other farmers, it’s one of my favorite parts of being involved in local food šŸŽ taken in Mt. We’re proud to announce that both Wild Grown Farm and Sage & Stone Butchery are now Animal Welfare Approved by @agreenerworldorg!!!

What does this mean for Wild Grown Farm products?

It means an independent organization has evaluated the systems we use to raise and process our birds and verified that they meet the most rigorous animal welfare standards.

It means we raise a slow-growth breed that has time to develop naturally. It means our birds spend their lives on quality, diverse pasture. It means that we feed them locally milled, non-GMO raw grain, fermented to improve digestibility and nutrient availability. It means we prioritize the welfare of our flocks and handle them with care and respect, from hatch all the way through processing. It means that because we own and operate our own processing facility, our flocks remain on our farm for their entire, stress free lives.

What does this mean for Sage & Stone Butchery customers?

It means you can feel confident that the care you put into raising your flock carries through to their final moments. Our Animal Welfare Approved recommendation recognizes the humane handling practices we use during processing, as well as the care we take to operate a clean, sanitary facility that exceeds industry standards.
We’re incredibly proud to have our work recognized by A Greener World, and even more proud to offer our customers poultry and poultry processing that reflects the values we’ve built our businesses around.

Overall, we’re proud to be part of elevating poultry farming in Central Oregon and building greater resilience, quality, and transparency into our local food system. taken in Redmond, Oregon by @wildgrownfarm

Our first farming season here (2023) the soil on our farm was DEAD. To the point that even the rhizome grass, my personal nemesis, didn’t grow. This is the first season we’re seeing flourishing life in our soils. Earth worms! What a major win. I’m really proud we’ve gotten to this point and I’m looking forward to seeing how our land stewardship and growing practices continue to regenerate and build soil health! by @wildgrownfarm

We had so much fun working with Kathy Coatney on her From the Farm to the Table: Chickens children’s book!

As a family with an almost 3rd grader, whose learning to love reading, there was something incredibly special about opening the pages and seeing Taylor and our farm featured in a real children’s book. Watching our daughter realize, ā€œThat’s Dad!ā€ has been one of those unexpectedly sweet moments.

We love anything that helps connect families to agriculture and gives kids a glimpse into where their food comes from.

If you have little ones who love animals or farming, be sure to check out Kathy’s From the Farm to the Table series at kathycoatney.com. She even has free printable coloring pages that pair with the books!

Thank you Kathy for letting Wild Grown Farm be a small part of this project! taken in Redmond, Oregon by @wildgrownfarm

New turkey housing is complete! The only thing we think it still needs is some artwork. Any artists in our community want to paint a mural on this unique canvas? šŸ˜‚

Major thanks to @foodanimalconcernstrust for funding this project through their Fund-A-Farmer Grant. It’s programs like this that are truly helping small farmers like us. We’re incredibly grateful :) taken in Wild Grown Farm by @wildgrownfarm
