We thought it would be a good time for an introduction for our new followers from around the globe! 👋🥰🌍

Wild is Life is a genuine wildlife and landscape conservation operation. We Rescue, Rehabilitate and Rewild orphaned animals in Zimbabwe… We pride ourselves in our #cultureofcare and we feel honoured and privileged to do this work in the world.

Our efforts span the country. The Zimbabwe Elephant Nursery (ZEN) and Wild is Life Sanctuary are located Harare, and our Landscape Conservation Project is in Victoria Falls, almost 1000km away but our efforts are united in striving to make a difference to the animals we care for #onebyone. ZEN and The Sanctuary are where the rescued and rehabilitated animals live and then they are moved to Victoria Falls (once they are ready) for the last part of their journey - rewilding!

Since our inception over 20 years ago by Roxy Danckwerts, we have successfully rehabilitated over 300 individual animals - compromising 18 different species of African wildlife and we look forward to many many more!

Thank you for following us and all your amazing comments, questions and feedback. It really is so wonderful to engage with you and if you have any questions about what we do - pop them in the comments section below. We would love to answer them!

Our beautiful Sizi is finding her own way in the wild! 🐘🌿❤️

For those who have followed Sizi’s journey, we have some wonderful news to share!

In June, Sizi joined six of her rescued elephant companions on an extended expedition through Panda Masuie Forest to Siombvu Pan, where they encountered a wild elephant herd. It was another important step in their journey towards independence.

Since then, Sizi has been venturing further afield, spending extended periods exploring the vast Panda Masuie and Matetsi forests.

Most excitingly, our camera traps recently captured her moving alongside a large wild breeding herd! Thanks to her GPS collar, our team can identify Sizi, follow her movements and better understand how she is navigating the wilderness and interacting with wild elephants.

After one of her adventures, Sizi returned healthy and in wonderful condition, much to our delight!

This is the beauty of rewilding. We provide the protection, the space and the opportunity, but we never force the journey.

Some days Sizi chooses to stay close. Other days she disappears deep into the forest, discovering the wild world that awaits her.

And with every journey, she takes another precious step towards a life of freedom. 💚

Since sharing the heartbreaking news of our beloved Mateo’s passing, we have been overwhelmed by the thousands of beautiful messages, memories and tributes that have poured in from across the globe.

So many of you remember Mateo from your visits to Wild is Life over the years. His gentle nature, warm smile and extraordinary devotion to Marimba clearly left an impression on hearts far beyond our Sanctuary.

Although we cannot respond to every message individually, please know that we have read your words with immense gratitude. Thank you for honouring his life, for sharing your precious memories and for the generous donations made towards his family. Your kindness has touched us deeply. ❤️

We also wanted to reassure everyone that our precious Marimba remains in loving hands. Her devoted Carer, Jani, who has also cared for her for many years, continues to watch over her with the same tenderness and dedication that Mateo showed throughout his life. We hope they will share many more beautiful years together.

Mateo’s legacy lives on in the love he gave, the lives he touched and the extraordinary bond he shared with one very special pangolin.

Thank you for being part of our Wild is Life family. Your compassion reminds us that a life devoted to caring for others can touch the whole world.

NO signs of poaching were detected! 🐘🌿👏 This may sound small, but it’s actually a huge feat for our team.

This was the encouraging news from recent ranger patrols deep within Panda Masuie where our elephant rewilding takes place.

Working alongside experienced Forestry Protection Unit officers, our Rangers are the eyes and ears of the forest, detecting threats, monitoring wildlife and helping keep these precious wild spaces safe.

And what did they find? Elephants, sable, roan antelope, kudu, zebra and buffalo, plus tracks from lions, leopards and even African painted dogs.

And thankfully no humans interfering with the wild landscape! Just as it should be 💚

A little unexpected rain in the heart of the dry season… 🌧️🌿🌅

It’s been unusually cold and wet at the Sanctuary, and across much of Zimbabwe, with welcome rains arriving when we are normally surrounded by heat, dust and dry bush.

The unusual weather has been caused by cool, moisture-laden winds interacting with atmospheric systems over the region and isn’t the start of the proper rainy season.

But whenever the rain comes, we are grateful for every precious drop! It not only settles the dust, quenches the thirsty earth and breathes new life into the bush but brings welcome relief to the flora and fauna that depend upon it.

Here comes beautiful Murphy, wandering down for a cool sunset drink. 🐘🌅💧

It is such a joy to see this young elephant thriving, and if you look closely, you may notice another little milestone: Murphy’s tusks are starting to come through!

African elephants of both sexes can grow tusks. These are actually elongated incisor teeth, which usually begin to become visible at around two years old. Young males may show theirs a little earlier, sometimes from around 18 months, and as elephants grow, male tusks generally become thicker and heavier than those of females.

Those tiny tusks still have plenty of growing to do. Elephant tusks continue growing throughout their lives and become important tools for digging, stripping bark and foraging.

For now, we are simply delighted to watch Murphy grow, little tusks and all.

Duffle might just be… up the duff! 🦊🤭💕

We have our suspicions that our beautiful bat-eared fox, Duffle, may be expecting, although for now, we are watching and waiting before making anything official!

If she is pregnant, we could have some very tiny, very big-eared new arrivals in our future. Bat-eared foxes have a relatively short gestation of around 60 to 70 days, usually giving birth to one to six babies, known as kits or pups.

And bat-eared fox parenting is rather lovely. Mum’s main job is nursing her kits, while Dad takes on much of the childcare, guarding, grooming and watching over the little ones while she heads off to feed so Muffle has his work cut out for him.

Stay tuned, as we hope to welcome some babies to our wild family soon 🤞🏽

The water situation at Panda Masuie has now been peacefully and constructively resolved. ❤️💦🙏🏽

We are able to pump from the dam again and the Ellie’s are able to cool off appropriately. In addition, all the wildlife in the vicinity are able to quench their thirst during these scorching days of summer.

We are most grateful to the Lower Gwayi Sub-Catchment Council, as well as the land owner for reaching a peaceful compromise, with grace and understanding.

In addition we are installing a new borehole, although it requires 2km of piping to get it to site. This has been funded by a very generous donor, whom we will champion in the coming days.

Thank you all for your concern and assistance in getting this urgent problem resolved.

Warmly,
Roxy Danckwerts
