She was always Venus.

“THE MORNING STAR IS THE EVENING STAR,” he said.

“TELL ME MORE,” I said.

HE WENT ON TO SPEAK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE WORK OF GOTTLOB FREGE. VENUS IS THE MORNING STAR AND THE EVENING STAR. DIFFERENT EXPRESSIONS OF THE SAME PLANET.

I WENT HOME AND THOUGHT ABOUT WHO I’VE BEEN THROUGH TIME. THE SAME HEART AND LIMBS. THE SAME EYES THAT USED TO LOOK OFF INTO THE DISTANCE, LONGING FOR A POINT OF ARRIVAL. IN THAT MOMENT WITH HIM, ALL I COULD THINK ABOUT WAS HOW FOND I AM OF BEING HERE, UNDER AN LA SKY AND HIS BRILLIANCE.

WHILE HE’S CERTAINLY A PROFOUND THINKER, I’M MORE IMPRESSED BY THE WAY HIS ATTENTION RARELY RESTS ON HIMSELF. IT MOVES OUTWARD, TOWARD THE DETAILS.

THE COLORS IN THE SKY.
THE PEOPLE REFLECTED IN THE WATER IN THE DISTANCE.
OFTEN, SOMETHING FUNNY I’VE OVERLOOKED.
AND ME.

WE’D SEEN VENUS BEFORE, THROUGH VARIED SKIES AND WEATHER.

HE POINTED HER OUT EVERY TIME.

AS VENUS TRANSITIONS FROM ONE ROLE TO THE OTHER, SHE DISAPPEARS INTO THE SUN’S GLARE, UNSEEN.

HE NEVER MADE HER THE MORNING OR THE EVENING.

HE SAW HER AS WHOLE AND WAITED FOR HER TO SEE IT, TOO.

You may have been writing your book long before you ever opened a document.

It can live in the story you keep telling.
The question you keep returning to.
The thing your body remembers.
The expertise you built without realizing it was becoming material.
The journals, photographs, articles, voice notes, obsessions, contradictions.

Before there is a manuscript, there is what’s STORED.

And one of the biggest mistakes I see writers make is trying to force all of that material into chapters too soon.

Before structure, listen.

What keeps returning?
What have you spent years trying to understand?
What do you know because you lived it?
What is asking to be released?

Stay with the material long enough and something begins to happen:

Patterns appear.
Meaning gathers.
The architecture of the book begins to reveal itself.

This is where I believe authorship actually begins—not with Chapter One, but with learning to recognize the book that has been calling you.

STORED → RAW → RESONANT → READY → STORIED

Maybe the book has been speaking all along.

Authorship begins when you finally answer back.

If this made you think of the book you’ve been carrying, save it for the day you’re ready to listen—or send it to the person who keeps saying, “I have a book in me.”

And tell me in the comments: what keeps returning? by @wildlarynx

A few weeks ago, I spent time in the desert with my writing coach, Stephanie @voicespanstudios

“Let yourself be shaped by the material as you're shaping it,” she told me.

Writing a book requires facing parts of yourself you’re afraid to see and memories you’d rather forget. You have to slow down and feel things, and the desert has a way of inviting that.

Landers felt different from my usual trips to Joshua Tree. Not much around except cactus plants, scrap heaps, and a smattering of Instagram-ready Airbnbs. Then there was the Dollar General store, the soft white underbelly of the desert. “Some real characters,” she warned.

I needed that time away to step back from life’s noise and catch a breath. Stephanie gave me space to sit with my thoughts instead of the swarm of to dos that usually consume me.

One afternoon, we visited Hawk & Horse Vineyard and Equine Rescue, where I spent time with two horses, Sunny and Epona. I expected it to feel grounding, peaceful maybe. What I did not expect was how deeply they would reflect me back to myself.

Horses are sensitive to energy. They notice tension, hesitation, guardedness, urgency. You cannot force connection with them. You cannot perform calm while your body is quietly bracing.

The closer Sunny came, the more aware I became of my body. My shoulders. My breath. The moments I stiffened or tried too hard. But when I softened and stayed present, they leaned in. It was exhilarating. I got lost in their eyes and felt their strength and grace. Being with them required surrender. A willingness to stop forcing connection.

It reminded me of a quote I love by Stephen Nachmanovitch: “The only road to strength is vulnerability.”

I have been carrying that line with me, especially during Mental Health Awareness Month.

So many of us survive by tightening. Through over functioning and control because somewhere along the way, it felt safer than trusting. But our nervous systems carry the cost of that bracing.

The horses reminded me there is another way to move through the world. One rooted in presence, softness, and trust. Trusting ourselves enough to soften and listen to the God clues that speak through our bodies. by @wildlarynx

99% of people who say they want to write a book never finish because life events are considered an interruption.

The interruptions, distractions, unexpected life events, occasions and circumstances that hold you back are the fuel to keep going. More importantly, your book helps your transform as you shape it. I’ve worked with authors who have mended the pressures of entrepreneurship, parenthood, and even tragedy through authorship.

When you commit to a book that shapes you as you shape it, the page becomes your respite, your solitude, a neutral space to process.

As you edit and reshape your book, the lessons in literary craft serve as powerful metaphors that reshape habits and free you from what’s holding you back.

@voicespanstudios by @wildlarynx facilitates the only programs that place the author first. It’s you who is the messenger. Your book is an extension of who you become in the process. Your voicespan happens now, your legacy happens later.

Note to self this morning.

Your expansion is equal or greater to the expansion of the work you were meant to facilitate.

Reach for that daily. Model a depth of care for yourself that others crave, aspire to, and deserve so they can see it for themselves. Show what’s possible, reveal the pain and imperfections, and most importantly, what’s on the other side of the friction.

As your dedication to self breathes life into you, the oxygen is transferred to others. Be unwavering in your quest to die saying, I love the life I lived.

Reverberating horse energy in my bones from @hawkandhorse with @wrenlikethebird__ and as she so beautifully reminded me, everything speaks.

As @voicespanstudios grows, I’ve recommitted multiple times to a more consistent personal practice. New phase of growth as an entrepreneur means new phases of growth for the work. Sure, you can ignore that and make money. But will you be fulfilled? I’m leaping into a bigger state of being right now to hold it all and you know what, that tree felt like it was holding me. Support is everywhere (thanks @wrenlikethebird__ for reiterating that multiple times yesterday). I’m embracing that and you took the pic I didn’t know you took that will serve as a constant reminder.

Reach high, all, but don’t forget to stay grounded. taken in Joshua Tree, California by @wildlarynx

Have you ever been kissed by a wild mare? Well, today I was. And how lucky I am to have been in her presence.

Epona (pictured here) @hawkandhorse __ and her gorgeous blondie sis, Sonny, worked some serious magic on me today. At the end of my session, she came up, placed her nose against my face, and kissed me several times. It was the sweetest thing. One wild one to another.

I needed her today. And I also want to say how much I needed @wrenlikethebird__, a profoundly gifted woman. Her healing work and this experience helped me process and release some of my own narratives, just as I encourage others to do.

How fortunate I am to have met her at a literary event here in the Mojave. I’m so grateful for life’s synchronization.

Much more to say about today’s experience. Can’t wait to share more but will my nervous system all settled, a good night of sleep is in order.

Love yourself as much as you love others. It’s hard to pay attention to your needs sometimes, I know, but it’s worth stopping. Especially on days you feel behind or you can’t keep up.

A little practice to generate the energy of yes, it can be this good.

Recently, I signed a lease for a cabin in a sweet, natural nook of wild. When I first walked the land, I imagined myself writing on the boulders and meditating under the shadows of the Joshua trees. It’s my vision come to life. Then, mirrors of my fears, “can it be this good?” were held up to me. Tonight I remain sure that, “yes, it can be this good.”

About a month back when I stayed in Landers to help out a fellow dog mom in need, I arrived to the house and a handwritten note was on the table. It said something along the lines of, “thank you, stranger. My guardian angels have been on vacation this year. Maybe they’ve returned.”

And I thought to myself, we all need someone to remind us that our good fortune hasn’t run out. And I decided that’s who I want to be every day. A reminder to you, to everyone I meet, that their luck has not run out. Life can be this good.

When I hit a breaking point in my life, there were people who restored my hope and that currency I’ll forever pay forward.

I say slowly and invite you all to say with me:
I recognize the beauty of what is here.
I am allowed to receive beauty without bracing for its disappearance.
I am allowed to build a life where my home and my creative purpose nourish each other.
I remain peaceful, discerning, and willing.

And I trust that my life can be this beautiful.
And so it is. Nature always rules. Hear her.

And with that, I relinquish all control. taken in Yucca Valley, California by @wildlarynx

Thursday morning writing lab feels far different this week.

In 2020 I discovered how easy it is to work in nature. In the throes of the pandemic, I loaded up my fiat 500c with camping gear, a router and a car laptop charger and spent 5 weeks on the road.

Zoom meetings were held in the middle of the woods. I wrote and began carving out my future as an entrepreneur. It was the trip that defined my decision to leave what no longer served me. And what I refused to continue to serve.

Today I continue to call on nature as my guide. When I doubt or worry, it’s easiest to find peace by inhabiting a scene like one pictured above.

If you are writing a book, working on your business or just need space to contemplate your life and decisions, buy a WiFi travel kit, grab a comfy camping chair and a fold out table and set yourself up somewhere inspiring.

Place your set up in your car. It doesn’t need to be far or hard. You can work from a park or a lookout point. Like an alternative to a coffee shop but you will need to bring your own.

Let your fears and concerns driving your story transform as you write and through the page, meaning making arrives. The kind that opens you up rather than closing you off.

Where might you roam and write to get out of the context of your regular routine? Share in comments.

OVER THE PAST YEAR, NATURE HAS DOMINATED MY LIFE IN EXTRAORDINARY WAYS.

FOR TEN YEARS, I’VE BEEN IMMERSED IN MY HEROINE’S JOURNEY, FORMING MORE COMPLEX AND FREEING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN MY PAST AND PRESENT.

DIVORCING A MAN I LOVED, I LEFT THE RELATIONSHIP BECAUSE THERE WAS A JOURNEY THAT HAD TO BE MINE BEFORE I COULD GIVE ANOTHER WHAT HE DESERVED.

WAKING UP THE DAY AFTER I LEFT THE HOME WE CREATED TOGETHER, I HAD MY ROCK BOTTOM MOMENT. IN THAT MOMENT, I MADE A PROMISE TO MYSELF.

“LEAVING SOMETHING THIS GOOD, YOU BETTER DO THE WORK YOU KNOW IS REQUIRED OF YOU IN THIS LIFE.”

LITTLE DID I KNOW WHAT THAT WORK WOULD BE, HOW IT WOULD UNFOLD, OR WHAT WAS AHEAD OF ME. IF I HAD KNOWN, MAYBE I WOULDN’T HAVE LEFT. MAYBE I WOULD HAVE REMAINED COMFORTABLE. I LIKE TO THINK NOT.

WHAT FOLLOWED WAS THE SHEDDING OF HAVING BEEN A WIFE AND WORKING SO HARD TO BE SEEN AS A SERIOUS, WORTHY WOMAN IN EVERY AREA OF MY LIFE.

THROUGH MY DECISIONS, I WAS ABLE TO REALIZE THAT WHAT I WANTED WAS TO LOVE AND BE LOVED FREELY, WITHOUT ASKING OR BEING ASKED TO CHANGE.

AFTER MY FIRST START UP FAILED, I PICKED UP EVERY PIECE OF SHRAPNEL AND IN THE YEARS FOLLOWING, DEFIED EVERYTHING THAT PREVIOUSLY HELD ME BACK. GROWTH POINTED ME IN MANY DIRECTIONS. AND ONE OF THOSE DIRECTIONS WAS THE MOJAVE DESERT.

I began conjuring up plans to buy property in Joshua Tree in 2018 before I became an entrepreneur. There was so much inside of me unsure of doing such a thing on my own.

What followed were so many unforeseen events. There were times I fell into such private despair that to this day no one witnessed. There was a calling in my gut that I would later understand what my life force telling me to stay in motion. And I began to relate to the message to move in more significant ways.

This past Saturday, I signed a lease on a property that couldn’t be more perfect for me. 2.5 acres of land. The first true home of my own in ten years, one I questioned I would ever find my way to. But it comes during a period of extreme appreciation and service to my work. Authorship has transformed my life many times over. I’m excited to share this next phase you.

Never give up. Find solitude. Your work lives there. taken in Yucca Valley, California by @wildlarynx

What a beautiful evening hosted by @wrenlikethebird__ @ellenwalker___ at the @hawkandhorse property

On the evening of Dollys passing it couldn’t be any more kismet to share a meal, paint, create and gab with these creative entrepreneurial women.

The talent was like WHOA.

I’m fired up about women going all in on themselves, all in on full expression so we can go all in on each other.

Invest in your fellow female friends, colleagues, family who take risks, make beautiful things, care about people and the planet. Don’t accept free sessions if you can afford to invest. Don’t ask for discounts or tell them you found someone cheaper. Paying one another is hugely important. When a woman creates value and gets paid for it, she balances the world of business.

Here are the women there last night and their businesses.
