Owner to owner: some of the hardest lessons in business have very little to do with the actual service you provide.

They’re about people. Communication. Standards. Knowing when to coach, when to listen, when to change the system, and when to stop forcing something that no longer fits.

I’ve learned that being a good owner doesn’t mean carrying everything, fixing everything, or making every relationship work forever.

Sometimes leadership looks like asking better questions.
Sometimes it looks like changing the way you’ve always done things… And sometimes it looks like trusting yourself enough to keep building anyway.

For the owners in it right now: which one hit the hardest?

Time for a re-introduction.

Hi, pretty people, I’m Misty.

A 45-year-old salon mama who’s been in the beauty industry since 2003. I’m the owner of @wildheartbeauty and co-founder of @almosteffortlesspodcast

After 20 years behind the chair, I recently retired my service menu to focus on leading my team, mentoring artists, and pursuing new adventures.

Over the years, I’ve experienced loss, grief, business breakups, and more reinventions than I can count. Every season has taught me something, but none of it has broken me.

If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I believe we can continue becoming who we’re meant to be at every stage of life.

I’ve spent the last two decades building a business I love, chasing wild dreams, and creating opportunities I once only imagined… From multiple salon locations between San Francisco and Sacramento to one beautiful home for Wild Heart Beauty in the heart of Midtown.

These days you’ll find me splitting time between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe, supporting my team, recording podcasts, and dreaming up what’s next!

Because I don’t believe our best chapters have an expiration date. I’m not done growing. In fact, I think I’m just getting started.

How long have you been part of the journey? ⚡️#salonownerslife #salonownersuccess #sacramentosalon taken in Wild Heart Beauty by @wildsueno

I quit my job…

In 2021, I made one of the hardest decisions of my career.

I retired my service menu after nearly two decades behind the chair. Not because I stopped loving the work, but because I realized my purpose had grown beyond it.

For over 20 years, I poured everything into becoming the best artist I could be.

Then I opened my second brick and mortar salon. Leading two locations changed my perspective. I realized I didn’t need another appointment on my books… I needed to lead my team.

Today, I spend my days helping artists believe in themselves, strengthen their craft, understand the business behind the beauty industry, and build careers they never imagined possible.

I’ve watched my assistants go from learning how to blow-dry to becoming confident, self-sufficient artists.

I’ve watched WHB artists become independent renters at my location and beyond.

I’ve watched artists learn the business under my leadership to then go on to open a salon of their own.

Leadership asks you to pour into people without knowing where their journey will lead. It asks you to have honest conversations, hold high standards, and believe in people before they’re ready to believe in themselves.

It can be emotionally taxing. It can be incredibly selfless. And it’s also one of the most rewarding roles I’ve ever had.

I’m so grateful to every artist who has trusted me to be part of their journey over the last 12.5 years. Watching people grow has been the greatest privilege of my career.

As @wildheartbeauty continues to evolve into its next chapter, I look forward to helping develop the next generation of artists and continuing the work that made me step away from the chair in the first place.

Sueño Solutions: Compare Notes. Not Timelines.

It’s easy to look around and feel like everyone else’s business is further along than yours. Bigger team. More followers. Busier books. More visibility.

But you never really know what someone else is carrying behind closed doors, and online, we all make things look a little easier than they are.

So instead of using someone else’s business as your measuring stick, use it as information.

Take notes on what inspires you.

Pay attention to what works.

Then come back to your own business and measure what actually matters: healthier margins, stronger systems, better retention, clearer leadership, aligned team culture, and a business that can actually support the life you’re trying to build.

Let someone else’s growth remind you what’s possible, not convince you that you’re late.

Keep your standards high. Stay focused on what you’re building. Your timeline does not need to look like anyone else’s to be working.

Compare notes. Not timelines.

The real flex is impact.

Influence means very little if nobody grows from it.

In this industry, owners + mentors create a foundation someone else can build from. We build confidence. We open doors.
We leave something behind.

I want to spark something that keeps moving without me.

At 45, as I continue to pivot into the next version of myself, I know I am lifting others as I climb.

I was called for this. In the end, it’s not only what I built...

It’s who I helped build.

When I first decided to build Wild Heart Beauty, I was obsessed.

I talked about it constantly.
I posted every guest in my chair.
I shared my work over and over.
I passed out cards.
I talked about the vision before it fully existed.

And yes, I absolutely annoyed people.

Some friends muted me. Some people were probably tired of seeing another hair post, another appointment, another piece of promotion.

But I wasn’t trying to be cool. I was trying to build something.

I was creating demand, building a brand and making sure people knew exactly what I did.

Wild Heart didn’t grow because I quietly hoped people would find me. I went hard for it.

So if you’re building something right now, stop worrying so much about whether you’re talking about it too much.

The people who need what you’re creating have to know you exist.

Be a little obsessed with where you’re going.

Nearly 13 years of Wild Heart this winter.

That number feels a little surreal.

Through every version of this salon, every move, every new artist, every season of growth… Our community has continued to show up for us. You’ve trusted us with your hair, your brows, your milestones, your families, and so many little moments in between.

We never take that support for granted. Truly, thank you for continuing to choose Wild Heart.

And we have some exciting things coming this fall…

We’re bringing you a fall styling class so you can learn a few of our favorite ways to recreate that salon finish at home.

And, back by popular demand, our treatment room is returning!!! Giving us space for even more of the appointments you know and love us for, especially brow services.

We’re still growing, still evolving, and still finding new ways to take care of you.

Almost 13 years later, and we’re just as excited about what’s next.

I’ve actually heard a version of these exact words from someone in my own circle.

And it stuck with me because I think this is one of the biggest misconceptions in our industry.

Opening a salon is not automatically the next step after being behind the chair. It’s not something you pick up because you’re bored, burned out, or looking for a change.

And it is definitely not the escape.

In many cases, you’re still doing hair while also taking on payroll, hiring, marketing, systems, guest experience, culture, overhead, leadership… all the things nobody sees.

So instead of removing something from your plate, you have just added an entirely new job to it.

I eventually chose to step away from my own service menu so I could focus more fully on leading, developing artists, education, and growing the business. But that came after years of doing both.

You have to want the responsibility. You have to want to build something bigger than your own book.
You have to be ready for the role, not just attracted to the title or hoping ownership means doing less.

It often means doing more. Ownership doesn’t necessarily lighten the load. It changes the load. That’s the part I think gets romanticized.

This isn’t me saying don’t open a salon.

It’s me saying: know why you want one.

Curious where other artists + owners land on this one. Do you think salon ownership is still treated like the natural next step in our industry?

August you were beautiful. An expansive time…

A month of movement, momentum and some very real growth.

Big conversations. New faces. New ideas. Travel. Work that stretched me. Time with people I love. And enough moments away from it all to remember that growth isn’t only measured by what we accomplish.

There’s something really powerful about building a life where ambition and presence can exist at the same time.

I even reconnected with old friends... that reminded me how much can change and how some connections can pick right back up.

My circle expanded this month, personally and professionally, and that felt really good.

I’m walking into September feeling clear, inspired and incredibly grateful for what’s unfolding.

Some lessons you only learn by living them.

You won’t always feel ready.
Not everything deserves a reaction.
Some seasons require the hustle.
And what works for everyone else might not work for you.

The older I get, the less I look outside of myself for the answers.

Trust your experience. Protect your energy. Work hard when the season calls for it. Build a life + business that actually makes sense for you.

We’re all figuring it out as we go anyway. xx

What’s one lesson life had to teach you the hard way?

For an industry that can sometimes feel really divided online, it felt completely different in person.

People were laughing.
Connecting.
Supporting each other.
Having FUN.

And honestly, it felt like everyone was a little tired of the drama.

Maybe what our industry wants right now isn’t another opinion about what’s wrong with it.

Maybe we just want community again.

More connection… less commentary!
