🍂 SACRED HEARTH & INK — NOVEMBER 2026 🍂

Coming In From the Cold — Comfort, Home & the Darker Days

Well, here we are, lovelies. November has arrived, the evenings are drawing in, and I'm rather ready to embrace a bit of cosiness! ☕🖤

The November issue of Sacred Hearth & Ink is ready, and I've packed this one with a little bit of everything I love about this time of year.

We're exploring November folklore and old traditions, getting to know the protective properties of juniper, heading out into the hedgerows, spending time in the garden, and bringing a little practical magick into our everyday lives.

There's comforting food, cosy crafts, seasonal inspiration, and, of course, plenty to get you thinking as we start looking towards Yule.

Whether you're a lover of folklore, a green witch, a kitchen witch, a keen gardener or someone who simply enjoys a good read with a cuppa, I hope there's something in here that catches your eye.

So, grab yourself a drink, get those blankets out, and have a little look through this month's issue. I'd love to know what you think!

Read the November issue: link in the comments. 🍂

As always, thank you to everyone who reads, shares, contributes, and supports Sacred Hearth & Ink. This little magazine continues to grow because of you, and I really do appreciate it.

From my hearth to yours,

Tia x 🖤

🖤 What really is SAMHAIN, to me! 🍂

Hello, lovely souls!

So, it's Samhain, and what have I been doing with my day?

Dropped my husband off at work, picked him up, been to the doctor's, had a friend over helping me navigate the latest French business registration saga (actual life saver), and I'm now working on finalising my own magazine. Well, I just finished it, whoop.

Very witchy, isn't it? 🤣

No cauldron bubbling away, no mysterious chanting in the garden, and no plotting anyone's downfall.

Although... mmmmh now, let me think! 😂

But seriously, I think it's important to normalise what being Pagan and practising witchcraft actually looks like. I still have appointments to keep, bills to pay, washing to do, businesses to run, and dinner to cook.

I don't stop being part of everyday life because I follow the Wheel of the Year. I just simply find ways to bring my beliefs and traditions into the everyday.

Sometimes that's lighting a candle, spending time outdoors, remembering loved ones or acknowledging the changing seasons, and sometimes it's wrestling with French paperwork and wondering why on earth you started a business in the first place! And cursing the French government! 🤣

Paganism isn't a performance, and witchcraft isn't a costume. You don't need a woodland cottage, a black cloak, or a bubbling cauldron to be a witch. But that would be nice.

You just need to find what feels meaningful to you and make your practice your own.

Anyway, happy Samhain, lovelies. 🖤

I'm off to get on with real life. The cauldron opps pan!

Good morning, lovely souls! ☕🖤

Have you ever made soul cakes?

They're little spiced cakes traditionally associated with the old customs around All Souls' Day, when people would go from door to door asking for them in return for prayers for the dead.

This custom became known as souling, and in parts of Britain, people would sing for their cakes. It was a way to remember the dead and keep their souls in people's thoughts and prayers.

One old song has within it:
Soal, a soal, a soal cake, please good missus a soul cake.
An apple, a pear, a plum, a cherry.
Any good thing to make us all merry.
One for Peter, two for Paul, three for him who made us all.

Imagine going from house to house, singing for a little cake, with the smell of autumn fires in the air. It's a lovely reminder that our ancestors found ways to mark this time of year through simple acts of sharing, remembering, and coming together.

And that's one of the things I love about this season. Beneath all the pumpkins, black cats, and spooky decorations, there are these older customs, little threads of folklore that have been passed down through generations.

Samhain is often observed as a time to remember those who have passed, reflect on the turning of the year, and acknowledge the darker half of the season. Customs vary, of course, and not every old tradition was originally part of Samhain itself, but I love discovering the ways people have marked this time of year.

So, if you fancy a bit of kitchen witchery, why not make a batch of soul cakes? 🧙‍♀️

The instructions are in the comments below. 🖤

Put the kettle on, let the kitchen fill with the smell of those lovely spices, and perhaps take a quiet moment to remember someone whose memory you carry with you.

You don't need a complicated ritual or a house full of decorations to mark the season. Sometimes, it's the simplest things that mean the most.

Tell me, have any of you made soul cakes before? Or is this a new little tradition you'd like to try?

I'd love to hear. 🖤🍂
Blessings, lovelies. X

Good morning, lovely souls. 💜🖤

There are some pieces of history that deserve to be remembered, not just read about and forgotten.

Have you heard about the Witches of Scotland tartan?

Created in collaboration with Prickly Thistle, this beautiful tartan is a living memorial to the thousands of people, most of them women, who were accused of witchcraft and persecuted under Scotland's Witchcraft Act between 1563 and 1736.

And it's not just a tartan. Every part of its design carries meaning.

🖤 The black and grey reflect the dark history of the trials and the ashes of those who were executed.

❤️ The red and pink represent the bloodshed and the ink used in the trial documents.

🤍 The single white check represents the continuing call for a formal pardon, an apology, and a permanent national memorial.

Even the number of black threads has significance, marking the 173 years the Act was in force.

Just imagine how many lives were changed, how many families were left grieving, and how many women were silenced because of fear, suspicion, and accusations.

As someone who walks a witchcraft path today, I think it's important to remember those who came before us. Not because we can know every one of their stories, but because they were real people, with families, hopes, and lives of their own.

They deserve to be remembered as more than names in old records.

And perhaps that's why this tartan means so much. It takes a painful part of history and turns it into something that asks us not to look away.

Remembering isn't about living in the past. It's about making sure we don't forget the people who were lost within it. 🖤

Have you seen the Witches of Scotland tartan before? I'd love to know what you think.

Blessings for your day, lovelies. 💜✨

Whispering on the wind…

Have you ever stood outside and felt the urge to talk to the wind?

I do it whenever there's a good wind blowing or a storm rolling in!

In folk traditions, the wind has often been seen as a messenger, carrying words, prayers, and wishes beyond us.

Our ancestors didn't always write their intentions down. They spoke them, whispered them, and used the natural world in their rituals, sometimes burning or scattering things to release what they wished to send out.

So, next time you're out and about and feel the wind on your face, why not whisper your wishes, dreams, and desires into it?

Let the wind carry your words, put your intention out there, and see what happens.

Trust me, you might be pleasantly surprised! 🌿💜

Have you ever spoken to the wind? I'd love to know! 🌬️👇

Good old-fashioned Yorkshire Tea!!!

Nothing fancy. Nothing magickal. Nothing histowick. 😂

Just a proper cup of tea.

Milk in, kettle on, feet up.

Because sometimes a witch doesn't need herbs, intentions, correspondences, or a special blend of seventeen ingredients.

Sometimes, she just needs a bloody good brew. ☕️😂💜

Who's putting the kettle on?

We tend to think of ivy as that creeping plant covering walls and fences, but there's some rather interesting folklore attached to it!

Ivy was traditionally associated with protection, with people believing it could help keep curses, evil spirits, and baneful magic away from the home.

But here's where it gets interesting…

In folk magic, a plant associated with protection and strong boundaries can also be used symbolically for binding, restriction, and keeping something where it belongs.

And did you know that in May Day folklore, weaving a wreath of ivy and looking through it was believed to help you see hidden witches or fairies?

Imagine looking through a wreath in your garden and discovering who—or what—might be lurking about!

I do love a plant with a bit of a darker history. Something that looks so ordinary growing over a wall can have centuries of stories woven into it.

So, tell me, lovely souls…

When you see ivy, do you think protection, binding, or something altogether different? 🌿🖤

Bet you didn't know your kitchen cupboard had a little folklore hiding in it!

We all know nutmeg as that lovely warming spice we sprinkle into cakes, puddings, and all those cosy autumn recipes. 🍂

But did you know it's also found its way into folk magic?

I love discovering the stories behind ordinary things we use without giving them a second thought.

Nutmeg has been associated with luck and protection in some folk-magic traditions, with whole nutmegs sometimes carried as charms to attract good fortune, continued safe travels, and ward off misfortune.

Here's another little rabbit hole to disappear down! 🐇

In some magical traditions, nutmeg has also been linked with divination and dreams.

Now, I find this fascinating because it's such a good reminder that the things sitting in our kitchen cupboards have histories beyond the kitchen. People have been attaching meaning, beliefs, and traditions to the everyday world around them for generations.

I wonder how many little pieces of folklore we've forgotten along the way? 🌿

Tell me, have you ever used nutmeg in your practice, or is this a new one for you? I'd love to know! 🤎

We all know lavender is associated with peace, relaxation, and a good night's sleep.

But did you know there's an altogether more mysterious belief attached to this lovely little plant?

According to plant folklore, people once believed that carrying lavender on your person could let you see spirits that would otherwise remain hidden.

Yes, you read that right!

Imagine popping a sprig of lavender into your pocket, thinking you're going to have a peaceful day, and suddenly discovering you might be seeing things the rest of us can't!

Lavender has gathered all sorts of associations over the years, from calmness and love to protection and the spirit world.

It's a lovely reminder that our relationship with plants goes far beyond how they smell or look. For centuries, people have woven beliefs, stories, and traditions around the plants growing in their gardens and hedgerows.

And sometimes, the folklore is rather more unexpected than you'd think!

Now, I'm curious…

Would you carry a sprig of lavender if it meant you might catch a glimpse of something normally hidden from view?

Be honest, lovely souls!

Women ask questions. Women learning. Women choose their own path and decide what feels true to them.

Perhaps it was never the witch we needed to fear, but a world that didn't always know what to do with women who thought for themselves.

Perhaps we can honour those who came before us by remembering their stories, learning from the past, and making room for women to be curious, knowledgeable, different, and entirely themselves.

There's nothing to be ashamed of in walking your own path. 💜🌿

And let's be honest, shall we? A woman who knows her own mind, trusts her knowledge, and refuses to be told who she should be has always made certain people uncomfortable. 😉

It's funny how a woman's knowledge can be celebrated in one breath and feared in the next.

Tell me, what does the word witch mean to you today? Has that meaning changed over the years? 💜
