Throughout the year, Wilkes welcomes Japanese students to campus from three different partner universities to provide a study abroad opportunity through the English Learning Center (ELC). During the fall and spring semesters, students come from Tamagawa University and Kanagawa University. In the summers, students come from International Christian University (ICU). This past summer, we welcomed 15 students – an increase of students over recent years.

ICU works with five study abroad programs around the world, but Wilkes is their only American partner. ICU students choose their study abroad institution from those five. Wilkes has been ranked No. 1 among ICU’s program partners for the last three years.

Director of the ELC, Kimberly Niezgoda, EdD, is not surprised by that ranking. Niezgoda explains the strengths of Wilkes offerings, including no-pressure options for international students to audit undergraduate classes without being graded. In addition to their academic programs, Niezgoda ensures that the students experience American culture in a variety of ways through day trips, excursions, branching out into the local community meeting new people, going to the movies, shopping, bowling and trying new food at different restaurants.

Wilkes University’s bachelor of science degree program in civil engineering has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The civil engineering program, which was introduced by the University in 2021, offers students a bachelor of science degree with four concentrations to choose from: environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, or water resources and hydraulic engineering.

Wilkes was first granted initial ABET accreditation for the electrical engineering program in 1980, followed by accreditations for environmental engineering and mechanical engineering in 1995. Those accreditations were most recently reaffirmed in 2022.

Wilkes University offers a variety of undergraduate majors and master’s degrees in engineering fields that include bioengineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering and mechanical engineering. To learn more, visit https://bit.ly/3UkcyYg

Robert Dean Johnson’s work life has taken him from Disneyland to ad agencies to the college classroom to the Bluegrass Writers Studio. In the latest plot twist, Johnson has stepped into the role of director of the Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative Writing. While he’s only been on campus for a few weeks, he’s enjoying the vibe and getting to know the culture that the low-residency program has built over the last twenty years so he can help to craft the next chapter.

Johnson didn’t follow a straightforward path to his career as a writer. He grew up in Anaheim, California, and attended Cal Poly Pomona, earning a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a focus in marketing. But rather than writing ad copy, he found himself delving into fiction.

As a science fiction fan, James Cousins is well-versed in the concept of an alternate timeline — a version of reality where one event or choice has radically changed the future. In another version of his story, Cousins might have decided on a career in urban planning. “I would be a property developer, I think, because of the opportunities to transform towns and cities, and to make communities better.”

Instead, Cousins chose to transform the lives of students. In this reality, he serves as the president of Wilkes University. Following an early enthusiasm for history to the classroom, a PhD and a career in higher education, he has committed to making the Wilkes community the best it can be.

Next up on the list of new Wilkes experiences is his first Homecoming Weekend as president. Cousins looks forward to welcoming alumni back to revel in their history at Wilkes and launch the next successful era of this place Colonels call home.

“There’s no better way for me to learn about the impact Wilkes has on our students than through the experience of our graduates,” says Cousins. “I’ve quickly learned how much Wilkes alumni contribute to the life of our University — mentorship, support, pride — and Homecoming gives us the chance to celebrate together.”
