Bloom (2024) oil on canvas

Whilst this painting appears to move in the direction of pure abstraction, the exploration of colour and mark making was still built upon a loose idea of form. There is a painting underneath, midnight blue upon a vivid orange backdrop, loosely resembling the center of a flower in full bloom. There is another sort of bloom, one that unfurls in the deepest corner of the mind and overwhelms you. by @will.lockyear

Imagined Sunset 001 (2024)

After my accident last year, I spent a slow winter recovering at my mum’s home in the Berkshire countryside. It was a time of quiet reflection, and I reconnected with the simplicity of nature in a way I hadn’t for some time. The long, drawn-out December sunsets left a deep impression on me, and I knew my next painting would respond to those skies that held me during my recovery.

My practice is centred around the idea that the brushstroke itself contains the entire locus of the artistic expression. Beautiful states of mind create beautiful marks.

This painting isn’t of any particular sky; it’s an abstracted exploration of colour within clearly defined parameters. I intend to continue the series in the future. by @will.lockyear

What a bizarre few months it’s been.

On Friday 13th October I broke my neck diving into the sea in Peru. Kat and I had our amazing trip totally derailed but I’ve not stopped being grateful for how incredibly lucky I’ve been to make a full recovery. I get to continue my life as normal. Thank god.

Two days ago Kat and I resumed our adventure by flying out to Mexico City. The last few months we’ve been living at my Mum’s place in the Berkshire countryside and it’s been unexpectedly nourishing as an experience. Wearing a hard collar for 2 months 24 hours a day was tough but having a solid stretch of time to really get to know my wonderful mum as an adult, as well as having an unbroken, reality-free stretch of time to explore my art practice has been a blessing in disguise.

1. I completed Imaginary Sunsets 001 during this period. It continues my exploration of the brushstroke as the primary mode of expression. This painting is first of a series I will continue in which the sunset is deconstructed to a set of rules relating to composition, value and colour.

2. Here is my wicked mum @helen_long_ceramics who’s taught me loads about her artistic journey whilst I’ve been living with her. She flew out to Peru to help me after the surgery and I owe her everything for that. We took a chocolate making class with me in a silly neck collar and she’s well good at doing whatever this is!

3. Kat and I had lots of little adventures over the winter. This has actually been my favourite uk winter I can remember and I’ve been immersing in the slowly evolving skies 2 hours either side of sunrise and sunset. We stayed out in the middle of nowhere in a shepherds hut with a log fired hot tub and I did this little watercolour painting of the early morning sun catching the edge of the hut’s roof

4. 🥰

5. Here’s a little gingerbread house Kat and I made. Thanks @hiimjq and joanna_clara_ for the kit!

6. Two pieces from the EARTH nerekomi ceramics series. Mum taught me about her explorations in porcelain. I developed this series over the winter. Finishing them all will take some time. by @will.lockyear
