Two fun afternoons to explore and play with image-making!

In this workshop with artist, designer and educator @will.mower , you’ll explore how a visual language can emerge through play, constraint and iteration.

You’ll experiment with simple graphic elements in Illustrator, changing constraints and rule-based systems — developing your own flexible visual toolkit along the way.

This is something I started working on a really long time ago - I’ve thought about sharing it several times but always hoped to finish it first. For a number of reasons I recently decided I’ll likely never get around to seeing it through so thought I’d share a bit about here…

This started as an idea for a children’s book that I wanted to make with a number of interactive elements and a theme of contemplation and observing the world around you. As it evolved I thought it would be fun to turn it into an online thing (I really miss the days the internet was full of interesting interactive sites built for the fun of it).

The idea was to create a little world where every element could be interacted with and behaved differently depending on the weather and time of day. There would be trains that ran to a schedule, flowers that grew or wilted depending on how regularly it rained, animals that grazed and roamed around the fields and a town that would light up at night.

The whole experience would be accompanied by text based narrations based on what you clicked or tapped and a mix of layered audio elements to bring it to life and add an ASMR like feel to it.

Anyways, this is as far as I got with it - the music is also by me and was written a few years ago following the passing of a friend. I’d love to get around to finishing it but creating web-based stuff like this feels a bit empty these days and I’m trying to focus more time working on physical projects that don’t have to compete with heaps of ai powered stuff. Maybe one day I’ll pick it back up again. by @will.mower

WE ARE ALL BODIES OF WATER

I made these birdbath sculptures available through my newsletter a few weeks back, each one was made to order and I sent out the first batch last week.

NOWHERE TO BE
Whitstable, 2025 A black and white photo of the beach and the sea with text in the foreground constructed from sand that reads ‘NOWHERE TO BE’. The text rises out of the sand with a sculptural quality and casts dark shadows. by @will.mower

Yesterday was my last day of lecturing at @canterburyccuni where I have been covering part-time maternity leave on the @cccugraphicdesign course since September.

It’s the best job I’ve had and I hope I can find more opportunities to teach in the future. A huge thanks to everyone in the graphic design department for all their support - it’s been fantastic working with such an amazing team and group of students. taken in Canterbury Christ Church University by @will.mower
