The year is 1986 and you’re a graphic designer. Nearly all of your work is produced on a drawing board by hand. The office has just invested in one computer, an early Apple Mac much to the amusement of the ‘lads’ in the office who were at best derisory. You though, are CURIOUS. You spend your down time, lunch breaks, early morning before work learning this technology. It develops, you develop. The boss realises. Suddenly there’s a computer department and you are the business lead. Now everyone has one and you are the industry lead. The year is 1996 and the drawing board is soon to be consigned to the museum.

Nokia - in Oct ’98, Nokia became the best-selling mobile brand in the world; Their operating profit went from $1Bn in ’95 to $4Bn in ’99; The best-selling mobile of all time, the Nokia 1100, was created in 2003.

In 2007, Apple introduced the iPhone; In just six years, the market value of Nokia declined by about 90%; Apple’s Value today c. $3Tn. Now most 20yrs old don’t know who Nokia was.

Zwift - I adopted Zwift in 2016. Some were interested but many scoffed and derided the new tech. Interestingly, scrolling forward to 2023 the ‘many’ included athletes and coaches that have now live and die by their use of Zwift.

In 2004, a small company called Predictive Fitness formed to solve the issue of how to utilise data with AI to drive training more efficiently and accurately on a technical level than would ever be possible by a human on their own. From this TriDot and now RunDot was born. Nearly two decades on TriDot is leading this advance in the training space by a considerable margin something that industry leader IRONMAN realised…

Artificial Intelligence has been developing at an incredible rate for many years. It is no longer new. The BBC commented recently that the word out of Silicon Valley was, ‘AI will not take your job, but someone that’s worked out how to use it will.’

So, the question is: Will you be CURIOUS?

That graphic designer in 1986 was my Dad and I’ve been curious ever since. Love you Dad. xx

TSS is a FAILED metric. ALL experienced coaches will tell you the same, but why is this important?

Training Stress Score is used to measure intensity & duration of a workout, which helps assess how physically demanding it was.

We use TSS to plan programs, monitor load, & avoid overtraining. It helps ensure progressive load without risking burnout/injury.

DOESN’T WORK. Why?

1. TSS designed specifically for cycling.  Swim, Bike & Run are different in terms of their threshold values.  60min of cycling is comparable to 40min of run or swim & actually with swim that threshold stress needs be spread over 60min with rest.  TSS❌
2. Environment hot/cold, altitude, humidity etc HAVE to be considered. TSS❌
3. Intensity Levels. Upper zones not given enough weight.  e.g. 60min threshold = TSS 100.  If you rode 20min at 125% of FTP (physiologically impossible!) you would achieve ONLY 52 TSS. Insane!!  TSS❌
4. Intensity Distribution. Considering mix of intensities throughout the session is highly important yet TSS❌
5. Intensity Duration. Simply, 1st 10min is diff to last 10min as you have 50min of training in you for the last 10min.  TSS❌
6. Training Stress Profile.   Age, Body Comp, Sport Age, Performance Ability, Training Load & genetics. TSS❌

Result - coaches & athletes largely discount it.  When asked how to measure stress to determine future training load?  Answer, experience.  Fine to a point, but this can’t account for many of the above. It’s using a map with no roads vs using Google active maps to determine the route forward.  To date, this hasn’t been a problem & whilst the message is getting out this remains the case.  Continuing Professional Development has always been weak in tri.  Much is made of subjective methods with little to no credible data, not least because TSS fails so badly.  BAD INFO IN, BAD INFO OUT. However, in the next 6-18mths it will become negligent of all those program creators not to have fully understood and be using the new metric, NORMALISED TRAINING STRESS (NTS) which fixes these issues.

I will write more about NTS but for now please listen and absorb this podcast. (bio) The future is here. #tridot #triathlon #tricoach by @will_usher_precision_coach

There’s been a lot of Kona chat over the last week, and rightly so. It was certainly a Championships that will be talked about over the years.

However, I wanted to give a bit of space to one of my athletes Lou. There is no such thing as a straight line of progression in endurance sports, that’s where the challenge and the joy of coaching comes in. Lou has had to battle constant adversity on her journey to this World Championships but she didn’t let it affect her consistency and that ultimately paid dividends on race day. 🌺🌴🌋

Congratulations Lou!! This Fabled Friday belongs to you. I, we at Precision are all very proud of you.

PS: Also only being 25sec off your overall target time was spectacular!! 😎 by @will_usher_precision_coach

🎙️ ATHLETE EPISODE: “I Wanted To See How Far I Could Go” 🎙️

From complete beginner to IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship qualifier — Flo’s story is proof of what’s possible when ambition meets the right training.

On this special podcast, Flo took us “behind the curtain” on her training: the goal-setting, the grind, and the moments she doubted herself along the way. Joined by her coach, Will Usher, Flo breaks down how data-driven training and mental resilience helped her push past what she thought were her limits.

In this clip 🎥, Flo talks about her TrainX scores — and why she loves that TriDot’s training is built to challenge her without ever feeling out of reach. That’s the sweet spot: hard enough to grow, doable enough to keep showing up.

Race day didn’t go exactly as planned (does it ever?) — but Flo and Will share how she adapted, what she learned, and what’s next for this ambitious triathlete.

How does swimming work your core? 🏊‍♂️

Coach Will Usher breaks it down:

On land, you’ve got a platform — your feet on the ground, your knees if you kneel. Your core engages against something solid.

In the water? There’s no platform. None. Every single stroke, your core has to engage just to create pressure against the water and move you forward.

Here’s the math that puts it in perspective: an average Ironman swim is roughly 4,000 strokes in about an hour, with 5-6 muscle groups firing on every single one. Try replicating 20,000 reps in the gym in an hour. You can’t. It’s not even close.

That’s why the swim isn’t just “getting to the bike.” That continual core and shoulder engagement is what keeps you upright and strong later in the race.

Ever notice the strong runners-turned-triathletes who start running slightly hunched over off the bike? A lot of the time, it’s because their core collapsed during the swim — long before they ever hit the run course.
Train the engine that holds everything else together. 💪

🏊 Did you know your swim training could be the secret to a stronger run?

Coach Will Usher breaks it down: the deep core strength swimmers build over years of training doesn’t just help in the water — it carries straight over to the run. That’s why Will has his athletes swim for the run, even when they’re not swim-obsessed. 💪

But every strength has a trade-off — Will also shares the flip side of a swim background and how it can work against you on the bike and run.

New episode: “Thriving in Triathlon as a Swimmer” 🎧 Link in bio to hear Will Usher’s full breakdown on turning a swim background into a triathlon advantage.
