The Heart of a businessman marks the final moment in my senior concentration “The Wolf and its Wings” and of the figures spiritual awakening, both conceptually and visually. This can be seen in the color scheme and the implied line moving the eye towards the figure’s chest. The businessman transitions out of the motif of the wolf to an airborne, weightlessness, which symbolizes the transformation and new found freedom that comes from the realization that something needs to change internally for the businessman; it is an enlightenment of sorts, and the end of his spiritual transformation taken in South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities by @willbaggettart

THE TWO WOLVES

Part of my THE WOLF AND ITS WINGS series

Through digital and printmaking process, this work reflects the cutthroat, violent battlefield of business through the use of graphic, unforgiving imagery and grungy texture overlays seen in this artwork using conceptual digital collage work by artists such as Chantal Jahchan as reference. I use the motif of a wolf to represent the animalistic nature of the subject
and his values, as well as the connotation that comes with using such a motif; the carnivorous hunger of a wild creature parallels the businessman’s self destructive “kill or be killed” mentality.

I was also inspired by grunge music and the album BY THE THROAT by Ben Frost (thank you Mr Koelle for the rec) taken in South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities by @willbaggettart

Introspection

In the second section to my concentration, the wolf begins to understand its heart through introspection. I was influenced by recent social justice and activist movements that serve as a form of spiritual awakening. The wolf begins to have a larger perspective, and the next series of my concentration shows this transition. Now that the wolf has begun to understand the flaws in the beliefs he once followed so strongly, he experiences a painful series of changes, physical and mental. There is pain and loss during this transition.
In this artwork, The replication of the X-ray of a persons exposed back gives a sense of vulnerability, confusion, inward reflection that comes with the foundational and emotional passage of enlightenment, however, there is also a strong sense of identity to be gained in such an experience.

Triple Self, Triple Death

Triple Self, Triple Death involves abstraction of imagery that represents parts of my life that have been further developed in recent years, visually depicted first in photoshop and obliterated or “dissolved” three successive times, then translated onto paper. I used stippling to recreate the distressing and decay that happens digitally. After exploring and abstracting these images separately, they are brought together on a larger paper in a singular composition (designed digitally), including each of the 3 initial images and attempting to blend them together in a unique departure from representation. My goal (similarly to my other work) is to explore the relationship between digital and analogue and to see how it relates to identity, attempting to recreate digital effects on the page, in this case, making use of a stippling pen to build up hundreds of thousands of dots that create an illusion of detail akin to printmaking work, specifically lithography.
The title references the obsessive, quiet discipline of stippling as it relates to the self. An immense amount of time accumulates to create a complex visual identity on the page. It also suggests a sense of death to old versions of myself to allow for a version to be born. There is an intentional destruction both conceptually and physically; a rendering and remaking of something, or in this case, of someone. taken in Virginia Commonwealth University by @willbaggettart

“The Money Counter” describes the businessman not as a human, but as a tool. The vibrant nature behind him is ignored as his goal is absolute as his mind is replaced by a predetermined automated process. this suggests that his identity has been entirely subsumed by his function; he no longer uses the machine, he is the machine. taken in Virginia Commonwealth University by @willbaggettart

As the final project of our project printmaking class, we were tasked with creating a composition that utilizes a strong figure ground relationship through sketches (seen at the end slides).I think I achieved the prompt somewhat, although the tone in the middle kinda takes away from the foreground in my opinion and abstracts the figure much more than I intended while drawing. Oh well!
This was my first time doing an etching entirely in drypoint, and while it was tedious, I learned a lot and made use of the roulette for tones!! I loveee the expressiveness in the way the drypoint prints it has such a character to it!! Almost reminds me of film. Twice Born

Twice Born is a single-take short film that depicts a scene of a mother who dies in childbirth and then reincarnates into her newborn. The repeated motif of a mirror suggests this same notion of self throughout. The changing perspectives gives an impression of the changing state of the mother. Grainy white noise fills the world as the paranormal takes over and controls the set. We decided to shoot in black and white and boost contrast to explore a dramatic, unspecific setting within an indiscriminate time period. The figure that stands behind the mother represents an otherworldly, ethereal ambience felt in the duration of the film. The mother completes her rebirth into her own baby and is left with the terrifying realization that she is no longer in her own body, and that her child’s soul is now bodiless.
During filming, we struggled to find cast members and a dedicated place to film, eventually simplifying elements of the film and abstracting the environment of a dorm in Brandt using pillows, blankets and sheets. We shot on a video camera in a dark environment and then boosted the exposure digitally. Lighting was a big focus for our filming; we wanted a central spotlight to illuminate the figures and convey theatrical influences, almost as if the scene could be taking place on a stage. The handheld camera lends itself to the sense of chaotic panic of childbirth. Even with all of the sacrifices we had to make in this project, I’m really proud of how we tackled the challenges and achieved a result that feels both handmade and deeply unsettling. taken in Virginia Commonwealth University by @willbaggettart
