Someone asked me recently: "If your why changes halfway through, how do you renegotiate the commitment without defending the original goal?"

Commitment is what you give at the start. Discipline is what keeps you doing.

But things change. A project evolves. A hire isn't the right fit. A promotion isn't what you expected.

And we feel we have to defend the original decision. "I got it wrong." "I've wasted the effort." "I have to see it through."

Recognising change isn't abandoning your commitment. It's making a new decision with what you know now.

Then keep going. Not blindly. Not forcing it. Asking, "This is where we are. What will make this work as well as possible?"

Commitment starts it. Discipline keeps you doing. Curiosity helps you navigate what comes next.

Goals are the easy bit. We set them, write them down, maybe even tell a few people.

Then real life happens... the busy weeks, the off days, the moments motivation doesn't turn up.

That's where discipline comes in. Not the gritted-teeth kind. Just small, repeated actions that carry you across, one step at a time.

So what's your next step on the bridge this week?

Ever heard yourself saying, "I just need to work harder at it"?

They call it work because it isn't play... and that's the problem. The word feels heavy before we've even started.

So change the word. Not "I need to work on it." Try "I'll action this by..." and name the one thing.

Work sounds like effort. Action sounds like a next step. It moves you towards something, rather than holding you back.

That's discipline. Repeated action. It might start with gritted teeth, but practice makes it easier.

Stop working on it. Action it.

Sport metaphors can be helpful for leadership. Here's one of mine.

I broke my ankle mid-marathon training. When I could run again, I wasn't motivated. Stiff, slow, a bit fed up. I ran ten minutes anyway. Then again. And again.

By week three, I wanted to go. The energy came back... because I'd kept going without it.

Work is no different. A missed promotion, a restructure, burnout, a cruddy conversation. It can take a few steps to get out of the fog.

When motivation goes missing, discipline is what moves us forward. And it's a practice to build long before you need it.

Repetition creates the energy. Momentum carries you.

So make a choice. What's the one thing you can do to get back up and running?

Dubai has no shortage of events or networking. Lots of people, lots of conversations, and often lots of agendas!

But a couple of weeks ago, I attended Matthieu Bonelli’s Conscious Leadership event, and it felt different.

Matt is on a mission to support leaders with the challenges they face in business and life. What I loved was the intention behind the networking. It wasn't just about meeting people and exchanging business cards. It was about asking “How can I support you?” and turning conversations into action.

I've been fortunate to find some wonderful business communities here in Dubai, and this was another great extension of the meaningful connections I've built with like-minded people.

Thank you, Matt, for creating a space where leaders can connect, grow and genuinely support one another.

Has your motivation hit a wall lately?

Fine two days ago. Then something's amiss, and by 5pm the next day the mojo still isn't back.

Motivation is your why. Intention is your what. Act on it and you create energy, which feeds your why again.

When it stalls, the why has usually changed and the what hasn't caught up.

So ask: has my motivation changed? Am I still on the right track?

Then one small action. And another. The energy comes back.

It's not starting over. It's continued progress.

Bit of a delayed post... but wanted to share the likeminded thinking Christian Romer offered in his Bravos! Lab in September

This is what stuck with me: Success isn’t just about how far you climb, but understanding why you started climbing in the first place.

It’s easy to get caught up in chasing goals shaped by society, our families or the expectations of others. But how often do we stop and ask ourselves whether those goals actually mean something to us? He helped us take a look at what counts - for us - as individuals.

Really thought-provoking conversations and personal reflection... helping us look at the role of self-awareness in making more intentional choices, staying connected to our values and creating a sense of fulfilment. I buy into this 110%!

Why? Christian spoke about Greek philosophy of "Know thy self". I love to talks about the Greek word "Eudaimonia" a word that means 'human flourishing' with a focus on personal growth, meaning, purpose, and excellence.

Success isn't just about what we achieve. It's also about how we feel about the life we're creating along the way.

Had a conversation with a leader recently about a fellow leader he worked alongside. Someone well liked, though not in the straightforward way that phrase usually means.

The colleague was charming in the way that gets you the benefit of the doubt before anyone's actually checked whether you've earned it. Quick with a joke and quicker with a compliment to the right person. The kind of well liked that's been carefully managed rather than simply happening to someone.

Underneath that, he did exactly what was needed. Not less, technically. But rarely more, covered over by how easily he talked his way past it. Deadlines that slipped quietly, always with a reasonable sounding excuse ready. A small thinker.

The leader didn't raise it. Didn't have the confrontation you'd expect. He just... started absorbing the gaps himself. Picked up what wasn't being finished. Pushed the project past where it was ever supposed to land, further reach, stronger numbers and a much better return than originally had been asked for.

This is where most leaders would have stopped, evidence in hand, easy case to make. But he didn't make it. He built the result instead, and let the result make it for him.

That's big thinking.

The colleague was let go not long after. The leader quietly, ended up carrying an entire project on top of their own... Thinking big needs recognition. And, in this case, a raise!

There are three places value gets added, and most people only ever work on one of them.

🌱 You can add value to things. Not the task itself, but the thinking behind it... the idea that makes a stale situation suddenly worth someone's time. Anyone can complete a task. Fewer people ask what would make this actually matter.

🌱 You can add value to people. Genuinely investing in someone else's growth, not because it looks good on you, but because you meant it (this one gets underrated constantly, and it's the one that comes back around the most).

🌱 And you can add value to yourself. Not skills for the sake of skills, but a daily, honest question. What can I do today that makes me more valuable than I was yesterday. Not busier. More valuable. How do I value myself more for me.

If we go in with a value mindset... believing everything is of value, and most importantly that we ourselves are of value on a visceral level... that value stops being something we chase and starts being something people feel. In our energy. Our drive. Our way of being. And if we are in the right environment, it will be seen, developed and actioned on in positive ways.

The people who actually grow fastest in their careers aren't the loudest in the room. They're the ones quietly doing three things, over and over, until it becomes who they are.

They ask what more looks like, constantly. Not in a try-hard way. Just a genuine "how do I do this better" running in the background of everything they touch.

They listen properly, which is not the same as staying quiet while waiting for their turn to talk (we've all sat opposite someone doing that). They listen for what's underneath what someone's actually saying.

And they stay curious about people who aren't like them. Different job, different age, different way of seeing the world entirely. Growth rarely comes from the room you already know.

None of this is complicated. It's also not comfortable, because it asks you to be less visible in the short term to be more valuable in the long term.

Talk less. Notice more.
